I can relate to this story very much,my father was a survivor of Ariana first plane crash in 1959 in Beirut a DC4 ,flight 202 from Beirut to Tehran and eventually to Kabul.
The plane crashed immediately after takeoff from Beirut airport at the first sets of hills,my father and a Turkish lady were the only survivors, however the lady died a week later at the hospital. My father was in the hospital for nine months he had over 30 surgeries.God helped him out of that inferno .He passed away in California in 2012
    RIP

    Hope your Dads still
Alive to this day , I’ve been on hear before , without your fathers survival. you wouldn’t been here today
The 1972 crash at Heathrow myself and couple friends manage to get into the field we’ve made a cross and lay flowers there couple times of the year , we’ve spent nights there too and we have some unusual footage , not going into details on here and we’ve caught a vintage emergency siren from that error
Hope your blog goes world wide your father is a very lucky man and I know he knows that as you do
    ❤ Joe and the team

I heard the crash. From a couple of miles away, it sounded like thunder, but that wasn't right because it was so foggy.
I was sharing a house in Horley, most of the dozen or so others were Gatwick ground crew, there were 4 aircrew from British Caledonian.
All I remember was as they came in off shift, it was like a close friend had died, everyone was just numb, hardly a word said. When the BC crew came in there were tears and a lot of mutual support. The whole industry was like an extended family back then.
What was said at the time was that the pilot was in difficulties because of the fog, and saw a row of lights across the approach. The crash happened very close to a nursery on the Balcombe Road, which had a number of floodlights covering its car park. I went past it some time later, and the lights were incredibly bright.
I also seem to remember that the survivors were treated at East Grinstead hospital, the famous unit that treated WWII burns victims.

Captain Nowrose first Officer Zaher Atahyee , Flight Engineer Hussaini Furmujly as a cockpit crew survived in this fatal crash, the tower said to the captain to divert to GATWICK airport near by but the captain replied i will try again, as the weather was below minimum landing standard, so the plane hit a tall building then slided to the side hitting a tree and the exploded up on impact and the passenger were thrown violently out with their seat build fasten all over the place , this is what the captain Noworse said to us, at that time we were the young student dispatchers and he was our ground instructor, just joining Ariana but the three cockpit crew flee through the escape window safely. after Captain Nowrose worked in Ariana as ground instructor but his licence was revoked, first Officer Zaher Attayee fired from Ariana but he later continued as a captan in the domestic airline called Bakhter Afghan Altwatna for a long while, Hussain Furmully continued as a flight engineer and later he was upgraded to Dc-10 aircraft as a flight engineer now he and the captain Nowose have passed away they were great kindest people i have ever met. But accident happens in aviation things are unpredictable regardless how skilful the flight crews are. i worked for ten years with Ariana a certified flight dispatcher and i know them in person while work in Ariana Ariana. i shared this small memory which i have it with me. Hussain zabi
    FAA certified flight dispatcher

Amazing interview, really fascinating to hear his story. I think he is mistaken about the DC-10 flight, as they did not begin flying until 1970. Perhaps he meant the DC-8?
