Creating a gold engraved signet ring | The fine art of making an eternal jewelry classic.

- In this video you will learn how master goldsmiths, engravers and polishers at VICTOR MAYER create a signet ring made of 18-carat yellow gold with a personalised engraving - in this case that of a griffin.
The VICTOR MAYER manufactory is internationally renowned for the exceptional know-how of its craftsmen. Extremely rare techniques such as enamelling, guilloching and engraving distinguish the works that connoisseurs and collectors value so highly.
We will show you the many steps involved in the elaborate production of a signet ring in solid 18-carat yellow gold in our workshops. See with how much dedication our goldsmith works on the signet ring, adjusts it and prepares its surface for engraving.
Look over the shoulder of our engraver as she first transfers a griffin from the template onto the signet ring. In many individual steps she first engraves the contours of the heraldic animal. Then she engraves in depth so that a three-dimensional seal impression can be created. The work is checked again and again by a test impression. Finally, an impression is made in sealing wax as proof of quality. The signet ring receives a final polish and can then be put on the ring finger by the customer.

The fact that jewelry makers in the Medieval Ages did this without modern technology is astounding.
That fascinates us as well. Already 4000 years ago, the people of Crete achieved great things. We bow our heads before these artists with humility.
Look up some of the ancient Etruscan granulation jewelry, and you will wonder how they even did it without modern tools. The gold is so thin, and their craftsmanship is absolute nuts.
I believe casting is an ancient craft, and yes you had to be a great artist likewise!, i like to do my own jewelry, rings but i suck at the moment it requires talent and a great deal of patience!

I'm a bench jeweler and there's a lot of things I would have done differently but I've always admired hand engraving work. I knew an old guy from Finland who was a master at it but he's been gone lo these many years. He and my old boss were Pals.

Around what finger would you recommend to wear this ring? I'd prefer it around my little finger. What do you prefer?
I personally prefer the ring finger. But that's my personal taste. Nobility wears is usually on the pinky / littel finger. 😀

Well, to become a jeweller does not mean in the first place that you have to be artistic. To become an engraver requires talents that include drawing and three dimensional thinking. For a good goldsmith dedication and flexible hands are the most imporant requirements.

Its a lot more interesting to watch the masters in Malaysia (and other poorer artisans) barefoot making these without using many thousands of dollars worth of equipment and actually hand forging them-not casting. I'd suggest following them and supporting their efforts. Just a well-made, pretentious commercial. Simulacrum.

Traditional skills have an intrinsic value independent from their economic or social circumstances, don' they? We have great respect for all kinds of mastery in the world of the crafts. And by the way, if you watch closely then you will see that we are not using any high end equipment. 🙂

Im from malaysia. all my ring i bought is from outside of malaysia. show me one masters in malaysia that doing better than this(engraving and casting) and ill marry your grandma. A lot of ring in here is bad looking but twice the price from other country.
