Practice, Practice, as my Mom used to say. It worked. I got pretty good. I wish I still rememberd everything. Hopefully you'll bring it all back to me. Not to brag. Got me to the 1965 accordion Festival in Long Beach California and then some. Won first place and a recording. One solo and one with the Band. I was 15yrs. old then. Now I'm 68. Sadly, Don't remember much, but I'll try. Thanks and wish me luck. 🎼😉👍

My husband inherited his mother's accordion 30+ years ago. I took it out of the case for the first time today. Although I've played piano since I was 10, and violin for about 6 years now, I have always been intimidated by the accordion. Now, I am suddenly fascinated by this mysterious instrument, and would love to learn how to play it.

Do you all follow the recommendation in the book to change bellow direction every 4 measures? I'm getting back into playing after a number of years (and it had been years before that since I had played). Health challenges and life got in the way. Hoping the guy I found who teaches (he's the greatest) is still teaching when I'm ready to call him. He has a set of exercises he prefers and I have them but I also have the book. For years, I complained about my stiff fingers that made it hard to do things such as staccato. I even had them X-rayed at the chiropactor's office and there wasn't enough arthritis to be concerned about. Since getting back into it lately I've come to the realization that its not so much stiffness as it is I need to strengthen them and doing exercises slowly and deliberately is what it's going to take so I'm doing that. Even if I only spend 15 minutes a day. Also dealing with some neck and shoulder tension which could be structural. Trying to sit upright and have the music stand at the right hand. Saw that about the bellows in the Hammon book and wondered how important that was. THANKS

I am in almost the same position except that I knew nothing about music until about 9 months ago after I turned 67 !. I always wanted to learn the piano and accordion even more, so now I have both. I also got the books which do show the bellows going out and in every 4 measures but somehow I don't think this is critical, more a feeling of what is right for you. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm surprised Lee hasn't answered your question and others that appear in the comments ?

Thank you for posting. I have the, "Complete Hanon for the Accordion Adapted by Charles Nunzio" copyright 1941 which has three sections of exercises. The bass part of the the exercises are in all types of bass rhythms. I have copied some of the exercises to Musescore (a program to compose musical scores). In this program you can easily transpose a score to any key. As an accomplished accordionist/musician do you think it would be worthwhile to play the Hanon exercises in keys other than C major, or would you consider it a waste of time.
I listen to all your uploads on YT. Andy

If you have the time, playing Hanon in different keys will only make you a better musician. Unfortunately there are so many exercises and only so much time. In 1959 I competed in National Accordion Competition in Chicago. Charles Nunzio was one of my judges. I don't think he liked my performance, because a guy named Frank Morroco advanced to the next level. I went back to Southern Cal. Maybe I should have done his Hanon in different keys.

+Lee Terry Meisinger Thank you for these reminders! Up until last year, I have never really studied the accordion. I am mainly a pianist and producer. Although my father was in the Lawrence Welk Orchestra, I never had the inkling to play the accordion. Frank Marocco was a good friend and I produced a few CDs for him. It is because of Frank that I have a burning passion for this instrument! Last year, I was given an outstanding accordion and have been playing and practicing most every day. I have transcribed solos from recordings by Richard Galliano, Frank and Michael Alongi and used those as my practicing material. I came across your videos and opened up my Nunzio Hanon book this morning. What a treasure trove of great exercises and I will continue to practice these along with my other material. Thank you for sharing! Mark LeVang
