Understanding Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus - David Sanborn

  • As a nondenominational pastor, David Sanborn understood the idea of the love, mercy compassion of Jesus, but was a little taken aback at the idea that Catholics had a devotion to a body part of Jesus in the Sacred Heart devotion. However, the more he came to understand that the devotion flowed forth from an understanding that Jesus is both fully human and fully divine, the more he came to realize just how profound it was to meditate on the fact that Jesus has not only a spiritual heart that breaks for us, but a physical heart that bled for us.

    Even my mild , careless devotion to the Sacred Heart has opened deep questions in my soft brain on Just what is the Incarnation . What is Christ’s love/suffering/death ; and how does he live in us to this day... very dense, unfathomable.

    When lovers want to depict love for one another, they draw hearts. Is it so strange for the greatest LOVER show us His Heart aflame with love for us?? It's not strange at all...it makes perfect sense!

    Very touching, moving me to better understand the love of Jesus and His Sacred Heart. Especially hearing the testimony related and comparing both.

    I have seen this image/picture of Jesus, The Sacred Heart of Jesus when I was 8/9 years old. I have also seen some heavenly like apparitions. Then.last 2013 I have a vivid dream being with a female angel. God bless us all my brothers and sisters. 😍😘

    Wow that is a wonderful parable for us. I have scars on my face, and have always felt it ‘spoilt’ me; now I cannot claim that I got them through any act of true love, like the mother in your story, but it makes me feel a little closer to Our Lord Jesus, if only I can bear them with humility. ❤️

I need of mercy Him so I can do better in my studies and hopefully I will get into this nursing program. May nothing prevail me from my goals. Please pray for me.

    It is interesting that the tissue observed from the various ancient and recent Eucharistic miracles seem to suggest they are from the heart, too.

    • @paulmiller3469

      As far as I know, all Eucharistic miracles become cardiac material. Of course, we believe all consecrated hosts are miraculous, but the ones that don't retain the appearance of bread are what people mean by Eucharistic miracles, and from Lanciano to whichever is the most recent (Poland, I think), from what I've heard they are all heart.

    Haurietis Aquas, Pope Pius XII - 1956
    "That all may understand more exactly the teachings which the selected texts of the Old and New Testament furnish concerning this devotion, they must clearly understand the reasons why the Church gives the highest form of worship to the Heart of the divine Redeemer. As you well know, venerable brethren, the reasons are two in number. The first, which applies also to the other sacred members of the Body of Jesus Christ, rests on that principle whereby we recognize that His Heart, the noblest part of human nature, is hypostatically united to the Person of the divine Word. Consequently, there must be paid to it that worship of adoration with which the Church honors the Person of the Incarnate Son of God Himself. We are dealing here with an article of faith, for it has been solemnly defined in the general Council of Ephesus and the second Council of Constantinople.[15]
    22. The other reason which refers in a particular manner to the Heart of the divine Redeemer, and likewise demands in a special way that the highest form of worship be paid to it, arises from the fact that His Heart, more than all the other members of His body, is the natural sign and symbol of His boundless love for the human race. “There is in the Sacred Heart,” as Our predecessor of immortal memory, Leo XIII, pointed out, “the symbol and express image of the infinite love of Jesus Christ which moves us to love in return.”[16]
    23. It is of course beyond doubt that the Sacred Books never make express mention of a special worship of veneration and love made to the physical Heart of the Incarnate Word as the symbol of His burning love. But if this must certainly be admitted, it cannot cause us surprise nor in any way lead us to doubt the divine love for us which is the principal object of this devotion; since that love is proclaimed and insisted upon in the Old and in the New Testament by the kind of images which strongly arouse our emotions"

    I won't go so far as to say this is slanderous against Buddhists but I can PROMISE you that no Buddhist of even moderate intelligence would behave as the man in the story did, 1st off because, even if he suspected of was a result of bad karma, HIS task as a Buddhist would STILL be to show compassion to her, 2nd because Buddhism doesn't simply assert that all defects are the result of bad karma (Buddha himself sacrificed himself to save baby tigers in a past life) and 3rd because, in Buddhism, the emphasis is precisely Not placed in individuals (i.e. transient epiphenomenal expressions of cosmic Mind) but upon interconnectivity and radical transcendence of selfhood as such.

    What about the hands.. they were pierced.. shouldn't there be scared hands of Jesus.. why would you divide a person's body parts and worship.. this is meaningless.. Worship Jesus who is seated at the right hand of God as a whole and welcome HIM into your heart and you will be saved and have a new life.. whoever is in Christ is made new.. old is gone.... the bible says " my people are perishing due to lack of knowledge"

      @@petercarlson811 Everyone thinks they're objective. But in reality, most of us bring all our cultural, historical, and even familial prejudices to the table. We try to convince ourselves we're some omniscient third party, but we are all products of our own environment, trying to justify it all so that we can tell ourselves we're right about everything. What kind of arrogance is it to assume that everyone else's worldview is tainted by their experiences and culture, but WE are the ones who see past all that and are the only true source of objectivity?

    • @petercarlson811
      @petercarlson811 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cominghomenetwork Well thank you for pointing out the obvious. But my critique had to do with the fact that the devotion to the sacred heart is simply symbolism gone haywire as a result of philosophy reigning supreme. There is zero reason to this devotion as the heart is nothing more than a pump. Why then the devotion? Simply because in folklore the heart has other functions. So we are to encourage erroneous folklore over actual fact?

    • @jimmyintheswamp
      @jimmyintheswamp 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Sacred Heart of Jesus is symbolic of the love and mercy of God much like π is symbolic of the pi constant. Both express an objective feature of reality.
      The Sacramental Imagination required to understand Catholic devotion is not unlike the imagination required of mathematicians when performing abstract explorations of higher-level mathematics. Indeed I doubt mathematics (science?) would ever advance without imagination.
