I live in North Carolina. I fell in love with Sunderland the city and Sunderland AFC like many Americans, watching the show on Netflix. O'Nien is my favorite player because he enjoys playing every minute like a kid. I respect that. Cheers to all the lads and supporters of this great club and city.

Thank you for rendering that word portrait. As an American who remembers how game Goochie was when we went down, I'll never see Lukey as standing alone. Yet, there is no question that Luke's heart, spirit and honesty, not to mention his determination to be the best he can for the shirt and the city, make him utterly irresistible.
Hello, I'm a Sunderland fan from Portugal (and FC Porto fan) and I have a huge respect from Luke O'Nien. He got so much heart and soul, he for me represents Sunderland. In the documentary Sunderland Til I Die he said that one of his dreams was to play on the Premier League and I hope that his dream come true and he play there with Sunderland. Even if Sunderland could not get the playoffs and have a chance this Season to get back to the Premier, I sincerely hope that Next Season you return to the place where you belong. I love this club. Ha way the Lads 🔴⚪🔴 PS: sorry if I made a mistake in some writing 😃

Mr Sunderland, love him, love his passion, love his values and he is just an inspiration to all our young players. Top man, he reminds me of Kevin ball. Sunderland through and through!
Some one else mentioned Bally, and I was thinking of him, too, even though I only know him from across the pond and following the team starting in 2011. Commitment, principle, guts.
A credit to his parents, a credit to Sunderland football club and a credit to his profession one of the nicest people in the game. All young future " stars" should look at this lad. After all of the mercanaries and charletons we have had over the past years it's refreshing to see a lad who buys into what it is all about.
Your have become a Sunderland legend and will be remembered in years to come as one of the best and most passionate Sunderland players ever. Your a star Luke.
Slowly but surely becoming a legend at this club and he'll deserve every bit of it. He's the epitome of what this club means to the fans and he's a credit to himself and his family. A proper player and person
A one off a credit to himself and the club. What’s forgotten though is from just being viewed as a grafter who gives his all, he’s turned into a very good all round player, all achieved through his own determination on the training ground to make himself better.
Thanks Guys. A modern day legend of our club who shows his passion for our club every time he comes onto the pitch. Fingers crossed i finally get to see him play live rather than on TV when i head across to the UK in Nov from Oz.
A rare breed is Luke. You can feel his passion for the club and it’s a genuine passion. The crowd know that and he will always be one of us. The journey has been hard over the years, but I see a bright future ahead. Well done lad, proud of you.
That was brilliant . Luke your right every fan in that stadium would love to be in your position. Your life has changed since you walked into SAFC and you have changed many supporters lives .
What a guy. Me and the family used to actually get tickets to the players lounge through Luke. We used to talk away to him and he was so enthusiastic to speak to, brilliant lad. Covid put a stop to that unfortunately but we'll never forget the memories.
I was in a taxi in Westminster and the driver started talking about football and said son had just got into the first team at Watford. I said Luke O’Nien and he was shocked I knew who he was talking about. I add a caveat I don’t know if he just said yes when I said Luke but as a Watford fan I knew he had just got into first team. A victim at the time of Watford looking to their Udinese and Granada scouting set up to miss Luke and Britt Assombalonga already under their noses busting a gut to get recognised. If that was your Dad Luke - you have done well since that short taxi ride in Jan 2014.
What a fantastic bloke and attitude who does us proud every match . I will never forget him trudging up the pitch looking miserable v Gillingham when all the fans were in the East Stand . How he’s grown since then ❤
Such a genuine lad, embraced the club and isnt daft enough to know he is becoming a safc legend. Such a brilliant season once again. Great goal saturday. Long may it continue. 09 is the man
Who'd have thought the little smiley lad from Wycombe would go on to be a shining star at the club. Proud to have Luke here. The kids love him, the Dads love him, and the Mams definitely love him.
We love you Luke, never change 😊 for someone to have cemented themselves in club legend status after only a few short years tells you everything you need to know. He is Mr Sunderland ❤
Its great to hear stories like this from players, especially the ones who have to work their way up from lower leagues and still respectful of the clubs that have helped them on their journey. LO9 is part of the recent SAFC history. Good luck for the future Luke hopefully for many more years here. enjoy your experiences. I'm sure not all will be good but that is life in general with ups and downs.
Luke has turned out to be a diamond in the rough. Not lacking in skill, but it's his enthusiasm and passion for the game and the club that resonates with so many people. Quite simply, he appreciates his opportunity and because of that so many people feel a connection with him. Ha'way the Luke!
You should be proud luke. You have proved many wrong and are more than comfortable in the championship. And with your desire and passion and commitment as a man and a player, you could probably do a job at the highest level.
I love this guy so much! I hope we never lose him. He’s read and white through and through. Such a nice genuine caring guy that works exceptionally hard for the club. ❤
My fav Sunderland player, my kids know who he is, just have to say to them you know Luke 09 who made that quality tackle late on when we went to Wembley and they like yeah he was brilliant. Luke bleeds red and white and a pleasure to have a player and legend like him playing for us. Hopefully he plays for us till he retires in many years time and then becomes a coach for us.
This man just shows u what we missed for years someone as passionate about the club who fell in love with the club the fan base he’s a hero just smiles thank you for everything here’s to many more years 🎉❤
Absolutely fantastic. Luke is a credit to himself and the club. Would love to see him in the Premier League. His energy and enthusiasm is infectious and he is a major factor in our amazing season this year. Well done to all concerned for putting this together. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hopefully he stays forever. What an inspiration he must be when he talks to the younger players too, passing on his experience of being sidelined then becoming a key player.
Luke O'NIEN is just a fantastic human being, a great example to young footballers all over the world. The way he conducts himself and his true professionalism is simply magnificent. Many Premier League players could and should learn a lot from the way this lad conducts himself. Great to have you at the club Luke
Supported Sunderland all my life...had a lot of mercenaries at this club that made it bad....this lad is the first player since Kevin ball ,who I have loved being associated with our club....❤
What a great person to have at our club, not only ability, but more importantly the respect and loyalty he has for the team. The leadership and passion from Luke is something the club has been missing for some time, really grateful he is pushing and enjoying the ride.
What a cracking lad.some players you forget over time but this lad will always be remembered for the class act he is on and off the pitch.Take a bow son 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Just an amazing young man in every way, shame my mum and dad aren't here to see him, everything they thought was how a young man should be, articulate and intelligent on top of skillful, passionate and honest, Mr and Mrs O'Nien, should be proud, they did a great job.
I actually love this bloke. He epitomises everything in a player that Sunderland fans want. Hard working, passionate and just a genuinely lovely bloke. ❤🤍
Anyone who doesnt absolutely love him needs their head looked at. Absolutely loves the club and is so proud to play for us. Top Top Bloke. I really hope he gets the armband at some point
I'll be honest, saw this guy at right back in his first season at the club and he appeared a level below the rest of the team - even in League One. I wasn't impressed and though he would be gone within a season. Credit to the guy, I can't imagine the club without him. The heart and soul of this current team - genuine, hardworking and a thorn in the side of the opposition while being the biggest cheerleader for the crop of youngsters we're bringing through. Thank you, Luke.
Gained massive respect for 09 back in that covid year when he turned into a full time centre half for a few months with all the injuries, similar to this season really
What an absolute gent, smiled all the way through watching that, I could honestly listen to him talk all night. He completely gets the club, the fans, everything, don’t care what anyone says, club legend
