  • In this video I show you how I removed the C pillar inner panel and removed/refitted a single detatchable radio roof aerial in a Skoda Fabia MK1 (99-07) which is similar to other VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda models

    Well filmed. Very important info gained from the video is that vital second seal around the square hole.
    The other important info gained is that the clamping force is on the protrusions onto the roof and not onto the gasket.
    So, if it's just outer perished gasket that's the problem, clean the area as best you can and put in some black mastic. You should get very good results with minimal effort.

    Thank you! My ceiling came down today and I was struggling with the clips that held in the top part of the trunk trim panels. Made it so much more easy.

    Month ago I replaced aerial on one Fabia. The guy who attempted it before me decided that the best way to access it is by ripping of the fabric from the hard shell, when he found out that it is not the way to aerial he proclaimed it cannot be done (antena was in really bad shape, missing the tip and all rubber seals but nut wasnt stuck), and left it like that. Anyway i did it exactly like you did, without looking anything up online, if you are at least a litlle skilled in car repairs you will figure how to do it and will not break anything. Anyway thougth i will share story from car repairs and also greet video.

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the story. Cars are increasingly becoming more complicated (especially electronically) so it is nice that some jobs are still relatively straight forward. I say relative, because even easy jobs need a bit of research now in how to take things apart without breaking stuff. I've broken the odd connector/clip unnecessarily (control knob cover on door card) which if I had a video showing me could have been avoided. Somtimes it makes me wonder if designers deliberatly over-complicate things ;-)

    • @rastislavstraka8107
      @rastislavstraka8107 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HatBoyHarvey Well these early 2000s Škodas are relatively easy from booth electronic and mechanical perspective, plus lot of information are freely available at least on czech and slovak forums. But even with these cars sometimes you cannot do things without special one purpose tools, and these are the places where designers choosed design over practicality :D

    Another good vid, this is a particularly time consuming job if you don't want to damage any trim\headlining. Some of the aerial bases are amplified and suffer water ingress, some benefit from cleaning up the roof panel with emery cloth to improve the earth connection for the washer. I often pop a little dab of silicone around if not replacing the seals.
    Nice one👍

    Mornin' Mr. Harvey...I succesfuly installed a new antenna on me Fabia, thanks to your video. The reception en the radio is not very good but since live out in the boonies I don't know if it is that or maybe due to me installing the new antenna. Any ideas to get better reception on the radio ? Thanks in advance.

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think it is because you live in the sticks. I'm no expert on radios myself, but I believe that the ground is every important so worth a fiddle behind with the radio pulled out plugged in. Also the signal maybe amplified, possibly in the base unit, but sure. Does yours have an extra lead to this? Aftermarket head units don't have this function built in so you would need to add one I think as the OEM one would only work with OEM radio. Sorry I can't offer more help and hope you can sort it ;-)

      Sorry you are having a problem with this, I'll look into it a bit. I presume you mean the boot hatch? if or rear passenger door then suspect wiring into drivers door assuming you have tried replacing Batteries in key fob, main battery disconnected/reconnected and fully charged/replaced. are fuses blowing? If no joy then the drivers door lock microswitch maybe the fault as when worn out it tells the car it is locked, even if the d,door opens. (has the lock ever been replaced?) or have you got the child lock ON? Hope this helps :-)

    As at 2023 I've got to get the cabin headlining done on my 2003 Fabia saloon and as the outer rubber seal on the roof aerial has perished I thought it would be an idea to get the trimmers to replace the aerial (I don't want water spoiling a renewed head-lining !).
    So, at the annual service I asked the main dealer if they could get a replacement, but unfortunately no luck there.
    Any advice gratefully received as to where I can get either a genuine replacement outer seal or a replacement aerial that's a good pattern and won't leak (There are quite a few full replacement aerials on E-Bay, but which is reliable ?).

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it looks like you can't get original OEM aerial just an aftermarket one. I had a look at the ones on eBay that say OEM replacements and to be honest those look ok to me, but make sure to get one the Fabia model. They did quote the part number, so that may be worth searching for. There is also one on: www.skoda-parts.com/spare-part/3b0035505-roof-antenna-china-4646.html , but don't know if that is any good either. There are companies in Czech Republic that may have OEM aerials, but not easy to buy from. Hope this helps :-)

    Can you let me know as to what the correct torque for tightening the nut is please? Thank you.

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The workshop manual quotes 3Nm for the MK1 aerial which is very low and for new items fitted, but later models are quoted at a higher torque (9Nm i think from memory). The main thing here is not to overtighten it, but then you need to make sure it dosn't leak either so not to undertighten either. Importantly the nut washer bites into the roof panal to hold it firm so you don't want to break the paint surface or deform it. 3Nm is very low so just be aware not to cause damage and also to hold it firm. Sorry i can't be much clearer, but if it helps , as I was refitting mine I gave it a little bit more on feel. Hope this helps :-)

    • @HatBoyHarvey
      @HatBoyHarvey  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, have a look at all the connections first, starting from behind the radio, you often find a break in connection. I would replace the complete antenna as replacing the OEM parts isn't easy to find and cost too much. The radio unit could have fuse also.
