When I was in high school _The Great Escape_ was about 4 or 5 years old. One day in September of 1968 a certain high school senior viewed the movie on TV. I thought McQueen/Hilts were very cool. A Saturday a few days later I dressed myself in an inside-out, cutoff sweatshirt and white Levis, I borrowed my friend's Honda 160cc motorcycle and rode across town to my high school's football game, played at the opponent's school. Immediately after the game, trying to look at casual and as calm as I could, I rode up and down the school's street, helmetless of course, there for all to see. For about a half hour I was McQueen/Hilts, or so I imagined.

      Triumph TR6 Trophy
The motorcycles used during chase scene in film The Great Escape were 1961 Triumph TR6 Trophy models disguised as German BMW R75 motorcycles. The star of the movie, Steve McQueen, did much of the riding for the film himself, although Bud Ekins performed the famous jump scene as McQueen's stunt double.

Steve McQueen did a lot of the stunts in that scene. He wanted to do the jump over the boundary fence but the producer refused on the grounds that if he injured himself it would have delayed the release of the film. The jump was actually performed by stunt rider Bud Eakins & he did it on a British Triumph.

So given task to sign write the doors on the garrison buildings. Whilst doing a door he overheard a conversation by officers about trying to find motorcycle dispatch riders. He letter told them he could ride, so became cyclist and joined the garrison display team. After service he joined a national scramble team and became friends with McQueen. He said funny how life leads in certain ways, if it wasn't for the chance overhearing a conversation.

My favorite movie, especially this motorcycle scene,.... when I was a teen. Flash forward to year 2010, and I'm already 57 years old, and by then had driven my 1985 Honda 150cc Scooter for many years. Top speed 65, but I never drove it faster than 45 to 50 mph, daily, on average. It is not an "off the road" scooter,...but I happened to be in a city park , and it was summertime,...I'm driving very cautiously over the grassy areas, in an open field, mostly. I get it in my mind, on a whim, that I want to try to "jump" my scooter like, "Steve McQueen". Forgetting I survived a heart attack when I was 47, had my chest cut open, and received double bi-pass surgery,.....and by 2007, was already lame in one leg. But for some reason I was momentarily, (insane). I scouted out some low rise, short hills, that were no higher that 3 to 4 feet. I just seized the moment,.....and drove parallel to them for a bit, then picked a place that looked feasible, and headed towards them, while accelerating my speed. THEN BOOM! I hit the "sweet spot", and my scooter and I flew up in the air! For mere few seconds I was airborne. Next, I saw the ground below me, fall away. Seconds later, I landed on the top of the crest, and luckily never lost control. My scooter landed hard,....its tiny 8 inch diameter tires, and mushy springs, just barely absorbed the impact. No harm, no foul, I survived, & my scooter survived. I felt 30 years younger instantly! For the win!

The German soldier who put him back in his cell after recapture was seriously like: "Man, I'm sorry you got caught, I respect the hell out of you for that sick jump over the spiky fence of death, but you gotta go back in now. Best of luck next time."

My all time favourite actor Steve McQueen ❤ 🤗
My all time favourite film ❤
Watched this a thousand times but only recently found out it was a stunt double who jumped the wire and not Steve.
The director didn't want to risk injuries and Steve was really miffed about that.
We all know he was a bike fanatic and could have done the jump perfectly himself but Directors have the final say.
    Brilliant film anyway. 👍

Yeah they didn't have enough stunt riders so the German on the single bike chasing him is Steve McQueen. He was chasing himself, as the stunt coordinator put it in an interview.

If Hilts had injured or killed a German Army soldier while stealing the motorbike, the German authorities would have been entitled to punish him for doing so: it's unlikely that he would have been returned to the prison-camp.

If he just sat out to dark and crawled through the wire after hiking to a quiet spot. Classic scene and his skills are amazing on such a old but modified bike.
