One very important thing I think you should mention, MORE important than length or frequency, is HOW deep that water is getting. My opinion is you should always saturate the entire root zone each watering, usually 3-5 inches down. Let it dry out, then water again. For some people that could mean 1/2in water, some more, some less. A soil probe is great for this

    • @markpantle9142
      @markpantle9142 หลายเดือนก่อน

This always confused me. How does 1/2 inch of water get 3-4 inches into the soil? Wouldn’t 1/2 inch only get as deep as 1/2 inch?

Allen, I'm in New Port Richey, FL. I recently installed my dream lawn of St. Augustine about 4 months ago. I developed brown patch shortly after. I have been following your bullet proof recommendations and the lawn recovers for about 2 weeks then goes right back to bloody hell. I'm going to continue to follow the regimen of pellets from both Scotts and Bayer coupled with the fungicide spray. That rhzoc is no joke, its as if it has legs and moves around my lawn freely. At what point in the year should I see results lasting longer than 2 weeks from my applications? Thanks for your time, and as always Semper Fi!

  • @MP-cx2rh

So, I live about 40 miles north of downtown Houston Tx. There are many species of lawn here. Most people who really enjoy having a lush lawn here has a Saint Augustine lawn. Unfortunately most people don’t study how to best care for their lawn. They want a beautiful lawn but don’t want to work for it.
We are currently in an Elnino weather condition. We are basically in a dome of heat. Trapped, no new air in or out, no rain and without mention very high humidity. The temperature doesn’t drop below 85F before rising again and hovering between 96F to 100F degrees. The average heat index for the last 15 days has been 103F. With that said…if you where to water your lawn here as suggested by this fellow, in three weeks you would be walking in dirt.
We are currently having to water an average of twice a day for 30 minutes. I know this sounds like a lot but remember we have had zero rain for 21 plus days. Faucet water and rain are not the same.
I here many of these people talking about what’s the best time? Anytime is a good time, i understand how fungus develops, but this isn’t from watering at night trust me. If it was…during the rainy months our lawns would be emaciated by fungus from the rain at night. You also hear them say don’t rain in the middle of the day…WHAT!!!!! The grass will insure the greatest amount of stress and damage during the highest levels of heat. The ambient temperature of water is always 7 degrees cooler than the air if not more. This is relief for grass being hammered by 100F deg temperatures for over 8 hours a day. If you see your blades of Saint Augustine turn side ways to avoid direct sunlight put the water to it immediately, I don’t care what anyone says. You see Saint Augustine is acutely a vine, it is not like many common grasses that grow and root individually. If the leaf of a Saint Augustine vine turn side ways it unfortunately exposes the vine to direct sunlight. If this occurs for to long it will kill the vine.
Most importantly…when the heat is high make dam sure you do not cut the grass to short. Look up the recommended length for your type of grass and adjust your mower deck .50 inches higher.

I had one like that 20 years ago. Not kidding. They are fun to have. Yes....I have an irrigation system but it's good to have a hose end sprinkler for small spots. One more thing...Too much water with this heat, ya might want to hit the lawn with some insecticide and fungicide.

Greetings from Strasbourg France . Well last years heat wave destroyed my lawn. But something happened, A neighbor told me I have a well on my property ( house built on top of the well) I found it and drilled into it he cement cp to find a beautiful 150 year old well . 15 ft dry and finally measured 15 ft of water . I installed a Gardena irrigation system and the app once set up into 3 zones , waters the lawn starting at 03;30 in the morning and will alternate multiple times . This was a suggested schedule by gardena , just wondering why it starts at 03;00 and finishes at about 05;30. It does appear to be working . Guess the point is we take off in Sommer on vacation and i cant ask my neighbors to move a sprinkler system around for me . So this was the best option ever .

Would make sense to water in only when I start seeing areas becoming haze-brown? As I learn my lawn, I noticed few areas start to stress sooner, so I could use them to trigger when the lawn is thirsty and proceed with a deep water. This would also avoid overwatering/fungus and would help saving $ on the water bill.

Paused the video less than a minute in. I’m assuming watering every 3 days is referring to warm season turf? My backyard is my control in NW Oregon, I water it ever 3 days simply to cut down on our water bill (don’t get me started on the taxes that are associated with Mother Nature here). During this heat wave I’ve gone to watering the front twice a day every day. I don’t have an in ground system, so I’m reliant on an orbital timer that only lets me run my water at the same interval (30 mins per section) 3x per day. I run my first set at 4am to soak as much as possible, which just comes short of filling a tuna can. The second set happens at 3pm, just before the hottest part of the day. I usually get about a quarter or less of a tuna can, which I attribute to to evaporation. My question is, am I watering too much? We have extremely hard packed clay in these parts of the country and I’m concerned that if I underwater I’ll turn brown, but I believe I’ve got a significant quackgrass infestation. On top of that, I’ve got a definite sugar ant problem. I picked up the 4 pack of micronutrient concentrate, but want to tackle the main issues before I start bandaiding the entire yard.

    Hey Allyn,
Great info! Here in upstate NY.
It’s been warm but also had some good rain in last few days. Had an issue with fungus and weak root system in my KBG, annual rye/fescue. Applied a fungicide last week. My last fert app was on June 15th. My soil test revealed potassium deficiency so ordered your Stress Blend with 20% potash.
Is it okay to apply it now and will it green up my lawn as well?
I learned how to water properly thanks to you. Believe I was overwatering early in season which may have contributed to lawn fungus.
    Thanks again!

OK, how does this translate to seeding bare spots. A quarter inch 3x day?

Tips for those on well? New house and I'm a little worried about killing my pump if I use it to water my lawn (.75 acres)

Did that move come from Ju Jitzu training? That looked awfully familiar! Hey Allyn, I could've sworn you told me last Friday the Ryobi review would be out last Sun. Dude, I haven't stopped cry'n.

Allyn, my lawn is struggling in Utah. Temps have been high 90's for about a month with 20% or less humidity and windy. What signs do you look for to tell if you are putting too much water down and overwatering?

Scotts makes a fungicide called DiseaseX . Of you have mushrooms do worry about them. If you have fungus Scotts DiseaseX is your best option as a beginner. Use 4lbs /1000 sq ft . Spread it up to 3ft beyond the edge of the fungus.

Allyn I want to say thanks for all the videos. We took a weedy lawn to now some great looking Bermuda. However, we’re still struggling with keeping spurge out of the grass. Do you have any recommendations for liquid or granular for this weed. I try to hand pull in the evenings but it’s everywhere even in the flower beds. Thanks so much.

I like this sprinkler and am thinking of getting one. I wonder if it can shoot as low as 20 ft with all the adjustments. I have some SUPER narrow areas.

How much should you water if you have put down Hydretain?

I’m doing the same amount but using Hydretain to reduce dry spots.
