Podcast notes: (Guests: writer Peter Gould, RJ Mitte [Walter Jr], Betsy Brandt [Marie]; Dean Norris [Hank]. co-hosts = Editor Kelly Dixon & showrunner Vince Gilligan) 1. Title means Horse with No Name, which is the song Walt sings at the beginning of the ep. It was originally going to be Southern Cross by CSNY, & they wrote tons of references to it into the ep, but then they couldn’t get the rights so they had to change tack. 2. The way they write is character-based. If they have a plan for where they want something to go down the line, but as they’re writing the plan doesn’t make sense for the characters, they’ll throw that plan out as they won’t force characters to do things just to set things up for themselves. They want moment to moment for characters to behave in ways that are true to themselves. ❤️ 3. The actor (Jay Taylor) who plays the officer is a fire chief in Texas 4. The lady who owned the house that they used for Jesse’s house sold it, so they couldn’t shoot there anymore from the start of s2, which is why they wrote it being sold. This season, the house has been redone by the new owners, who built an addition & remodeled, so it looks different. 5. The axe the Cousins use is made by the same company that made the one Jack carries around in the Shining bc they wanted one that looked like/was a reference to that 6. They were all worried about how to get the pizza to come out of the box, land on the roof, & stay there. They had talked about CGI, or having someone on the roof to place it & then get edited out, or piecing shots together. But then Bryan nailed it on the first take! And never got it again after that, so what we see is the first take.
Michael Bond Just search for Breaking Bad wherever you listen to podcasts. It was Kelly Dixon’s idea originally for them to put out a podcast after each episode where they talked with different folks involved in making that one. They released it the day after each episode aired, starting with S2E1. She and Vince cohost. They do one for Better Call Saul, too, but with different co-hosts. I’d been listening to them to refamiliarize myself with what happened in each before watching N&S’s reactions, and I thought it’d be cool to share some highlights in the comments for folks who may be interested but not know about/have time to listen themselves. :)
Caballo Sin Nombre translates to 'A Horse with No Name' which is not only the song Walt sings in the cold open, but operates as the overall theme for the episode. Walt has no idea of the "horse's name" he's riding (aka the criminal underworld) and how expansive and connected the people are who he's come across. He's blind to the impending danger that surrounds him, (quite literally at the end). The teddy bear's eye sort of represents the universe being aware of Walt's actions (Guilt). Also Jesse, who has accepted himself as the 'bad guy', can be seen as a horse with no name as well after partnering up with Saul to buy the house anonymously. The show always has great subtext like this.
I remembered years ago reading a story about a house that kept getting pizzas thrown onto the roof by random people because of a TV show. I guess now I know what TV show that is now! 🏡 💲 ⛏ and a very special 🍕!
@@busimagen Oh don't worry, I am watching the show, I just watch it around the same week that they react to. Nikki & Steven have basically introduced me to Breaking Bad. I probably have never bothered to watch it otherwise.
Just so you know, Vince Gilligan has said that colors are important to the mood and emotions of each character. Like how Steven noticed that Skylar is always wearing that shade of Blue. Hank is always in orange, Marie is Purple and Walt is that Beige/Yellow sort of color.
Sauls advice when discussing the divorce after watching BCS kinda makes sense. Glad BCS & Saul & Kim’s story ended the way it did, gotta love Kim & Saul they had one LEGENDARY epic run
It's not so much Walt can't help being "Heisenberg" as he likes the way it feels and he's allowing his newfound aggression and confidence into all aspects of his life, rather than exercising restraint. He also seems to misunderstand what he get away with, since he's acting out in times where it's better to stay silent. Also, I'm not sure if you guys ever connected the dots bc I didn't hear either of you mention it, but the name Heisenberg comes from Heisenberg's law in chemistry.
Yeah, I think it might be able to be even viewed simpler than that as it's simply as though Walt's cancer diagnosis has naturally made him question his life and existence after twenty-five years of always doing the right thing with little to no reward, in particular financially, like he questions, "What's the point of always doing the right thing anymore"? and Hank eggs him on to gain an interest in meth by revealing how much money drug dealers make breaking the law while he has 2 jobs and comparatively makes nothing in return.... So he naturally questions morality, right vs wrong, and his own existence within those philosophies and finally decides "Screw it, I'm sick of doing the right thing; I'm going to take some chances for once in my life and do what I really want to do and say what I really feel like saying as opposed to always appeasing everyone and biting my tongue" and takes Hank's advice to "get some excitement in his life", and the cancer diagnosis and emotional turmoil of that blindsiding health problem are basically driving him off the deep end because he just doesn't care anymore bc his life sucks. The show is really a good study of how an unfortunate health diagnosis potentially could realistically change someone's views and behavior.
I never payed attention to the names of the episodes before. "Caballo sin nombre" means "Horse with no name", that's the song from the band "America" Walt is singing in the car and later in the shower. The song is about the feeling of being in the dry, hot desert in New Mexico. So I guess nothing in this show is random.
This early season 3 is a big continuation of the dark humor from season 1...Walt's just this milquetoast teacher dealing with his domestic normal life troubles trying to win his family back, while apparently there's this much bigger world out there going on around him that he doesn't know about. His unassuming demeanor while these evil twins with an axe roll up in front of his house, along with the opening sequence when he gets pulled over and then pepper sprayed is downright funny and dark humor. Walt's a character. Walt's societal domestication has conditioned him to be an everyday teacher once he is removed from his meth cooking, which he hasn't done in over a month now. There's a lot going on symbolically that is really humorous like this concept that this nerdy older dad is cooking meth that has involved him with people like these twins, who are obviously bad guys out to kill him.
@Drake Lang - That's true. Some of the dialogue is on Seinfeld-level of funny at times. 4 and 5 get more serious consistently, but personally I still think they have plenty of funny lines and dialogue in them, too. I now watch Breaking Bad most of the time with this dazed smile on my face the whole time because the whole thing is just so entertainingly funny when you know what's going on. The first time I watched it I had the same smile a lot (I remember the first time was when I saw Saul's office, which was great satire) and laughed often, but now I just laugh through the whole thing (except for the really dark parts)….Walt reminds me of my grandfather in many ways- his thought process, mannerisms, and dialogue, and the way he works around the house and stuff. He could be a real person- that's how I know. My grandfather also had lung cancer, but he was in his 70s and smoked all his life.
Fun story behind the Pizza on the roof. They planned on doing so it lands as you see on the episode and prepared multiple pizzas ahead in case they need to reshoot but Bryan Cranston managed to land it on the first try

It does have a very Pulp Fiction feel to it 👌🏻 Vince Gilligan is a Tarantino fan and you can also see it with every shot at Los Pollos Hermanos. The angle of the camera, the colors, etc.
“Those boys from Juarez” means the cartels. There is a huge cartel presence in Juarez. The show creators throw these little details in and don’t spell everything out because they didn’t want to fall into the trap most shows do of assuming the audience is dumb and needs everything explained through exposition.
Heisenberg isn't a split personality, it's just a name. It's not something he turns on and off. That's fully Walt making those choices. Going into this business has affected and developed the kind of person Walt's becoming. 🏠 💰 🪓
@@bwolf2076 At this point of the season, 1st time watchers don't know what's up with Walt. Perhaps it is a split personality or maybe he's having the effects of Meth entering his system (my theory), etc. We just don't know...yet you make it seem as if you know Walt personally...which is why i made a sarcastic reply :-)
1:49 "They're responsible for what, three drug dealers' deaths?" Statistically speaking, there were probably 1 or 2 drug dealers on that plane :P 🏡💵🙍♂️🙍♂️🔪
12:56 My heart was ripping apart for Skyler in this part. She's been backed into a corner by Walt. She can't tell anyone about him unless she wants to detonate her family for good, yet everyone is seeing her as a bitch in the situation when she really isn't.
I'm fine with what Jesse did to his parents (bullying them into selling the house at a lower price) because earlier in the episode, he honestly tried to re-form a connection with them. But all he got from his dad was "Ok, thanks for coming, don't enter the house though. What's that, you want to have dinner with us someday ? Y-yeah, someday. Someday.". They're (at least his dad) obviously not interested in having anything to do with him, so he stopped caring about them in response to that.
Syabri on the other side of that though Jesse has spent years lying to them and taking advantage of their forgiving nature for years. So to me it’s not that surprising for Jessie’s father to to be a tad bit distant from his son. Especially after they had just cleaned up his meth lab and fumigated the basement
@@hunterlee3353 Yeah that's very true, the relationship between Jesse and his parents is bad for a reason, and he's (at least partially) responsible for it. I just find it very sad how he got rejected when he only asked to spend time with them. It's not like he asked them money, or a room in the house, or anything other than a little bit of their time. I understand most of his parents' decisions toward him but this scene here always makes me side with Jesse.
The Axe is about sending a message. Anyone can just shoot someone, but not every body leaves a mangled, dismembered body for the persons family to find.
Yeah, it's kind of annoying how people try to second guess the show and question it (probably bc somebody they know who was jealous they chose to watch Breaking Bad rather than the comic book show or subpar show they liked and wanted them to watch told them the show was stupid and unrealistic and not to watch it so they go into it with that in mind, maybe) as if they're smarter than the creators and the makers... This is one show where that attitude will be set aside...There's only a handful of questionable aspects of BB in that regard, which is not many considering the show is 46 hours long, an average of maybe one per season....I don't like it when people second guess stuff all the time as if they think they know better than the writers...BB is not a show that fits that approach (the few examples are only found out after research like the fulminated mercury, etc).
Sounds similar to Immortal Technique's "Dance with the Devil" - "They told him any motherfucking coward can sell drugs Any bitch nigga with a gun, can bust slugs Any nigga with a red shirt can front like a blood Even Puffy smoked a motherfucker up in a club But only a real thug can stab someone till they die Standing in front of them, staring straight into their eyes"
g henry I completely agree. There was this couple that did br ba reactions a long time ago. A anorexic guy with a ditzy girlfriend. She would just CONSTANTLY 2nd guess and call bs on the show just cause. Probably just trying to compensate for the fact that she was ugly as hell

If they have a plan for where they want something to go down the line, but as they’re writing the plan doesn’t make sense for the characters, they’ll throw that plan out as they won’t force characters to do things just to set things up for themselves. They want moment to moment for characters to behave in ways that are true to themselves. ❤️
3. The actor (Jay Taylor) who plays the officer is a fire chief in Texas
4. The lady who owned the house that they used for Jesse’s house sold it, so they couldn’t shoot there anymore from the start of s2, which is why they wrote it being sold. This season, the house has been redone by the new owners, who built an addition & remodeled, so it looks different.
5. The axe the Cousins use is made by the same company that made the one Jack carries around in the Shining bc they wanted one that looked like/was a reference to that
6. They were all worried about how to get the pizza to come out of the box, land on the roof, & stay there. They had talked about CGI, or having someone on the roof to place it & then get edited out, or piecing shots together. But then Bryan nailed it on the first take! And never got it again after that, so what we see is the first take.
We meet again! Love your posts.
Did you say... podcast? I'm intrigued and wish to learn more.
I didn’t know that about the axe, but totally see it now. RIP Scatman Crothers

Ohh just you wait 😎
hes my 3rd fav character
@@Kaizuk0hakupac He and Jesse are my favorites. Hank being my third favorite.
@@spirittammyk no love for walt xD
"I've got dipping sticks"
- Heisenberg
I remembered years ago reading a story about a house that kept getting pizzas thrown onto the roof by random people because of a TV show. I guess now I know what TV show that is now! 🏡 💲 ⛏ and a very special 🍕!
@@busimagen Oh don't worry, I am watching the show, I just watch it around the same week that they react to. Nikki & Steven have basically introduced me to Breaking Bad. I probably have never bothered to watch it otherwise.

Zangief: He is bad guy, but this does not mean he is "bad guy."
When you finish bb try better call Saul, is reaaaaally good but different

Not action packed series like bb but more on legal matters

27:06 “Do you want to know why I use an ax? Guns are too quick. You can’t savor all the… little emotions.”
Just so you know, Vince Gilligan has said that colors are important to the mood and emotions of each character. Like how Steven noticed that Skylar is always wearing that shade of Blue. Hank is always in orange, Marie is Purple and Walt is that Beige/Yellow sort of color.
They chose the axe for execution because 1) It's kind of their MO and like a cartel thing.
2) It's personal.
🏘️💰⛏️
I went and re-binged the show again thanks to all these reactions. Dude, I cannot WAIT until you guys get further into the series.
Heisenberg is not a separate personality it is just an alias. Everything Walt does is his own choice.
Walt is in the great game now....
And the great game is terrifying.
👥👁⛏
I never payed attention to the names of the episodes before. "Caballo sin nombre" means "Horse with no name", that's the song from the band "America" Walt is singing in the car and later in the shower. The song is about the feeling of being in the dry, hot desert in New Mexico. So I guess nothing in this show is random.
🏠💰🔨👥 and even though you didn't request because it was such a perfect throw 🍕
"I GOT YOUR RESTRAINING ORDER RIGHT HERE RESTRAIN THIS!" LMFAO i had a belly laugh
Watching Mike get to work will never cease to draw me in and blow me away
When I have to wait till the next reaction BB video, I pull out ax and chop up my computer. It's been an expensive habit.
"Shut your dirty stealing mouth Marie!" LMFAO. Great reaction.
What was the first thing I started to do when I logged in the web (in the 90's we were saying " to surf on the internet")? I looked at my notifications, saw your beautiful faces, saw Breaking Bad and then clicked on it.
I clicked the "like" button (in your case the "love" button) before watching and write this comment.
I love you guys! Keep on doing this great entertaining work.
Again: the roof pizza - it's so iconic; you just must've seen it somewhere! :-)
I started watching this channel for Chernobyl, right after I watched Chernobyl, then I realized you were watching Vikings and I had just binge watched Vikings right before Chernobyl, A friend recommended I watch Breaking Bad right before we started watching Better Call Saul
So I'm watching "along" with you, I watch 2 or 3 episodes and then come in here and catch up with YOU watching

This show has the perfect blend of intense drama, combined with comedy! 🏠💸💰⛏
Not only was the pizza on the roof intended, bryan cranston managed to do it in one take.
Navy blue is your color, Nikki. It really compliments you.
Haha. All three of your guesses about the twins were correct. So much fun watching with Nikki and Steven. 😊

The "cleaner" is a cool old dude. He became my favorite shortly after this episode.
I wish we could get more Breaking Bad. I feel like this show is getting short changed. I really appreciate the obvious effort you put into your channel. I just want more episodes per week for this show if at all possible. I binge watched this show a few years back when I was laid up sick in bed and it was a wild ride! Love your channel!
A film is going to be made by all accounts
Fun fact - the real life owner of that house has politely asked fans of the show to STOP THROWING F*CKING PIZZA ONTO HIS ROOF! :)
I thought it was a chick who owned the house.
GET YOUR RESTRAINING ORDER RIGHT HERE, RESTRAINT THIS. LMAO
Fun fact: besides the pizza was purposely thrown on the roof the first try. ALSO a real family lives at this house, and after this episode aired fans of the show went to this house to throw their own pizzas on the roof lol, and it became a huge issue to the family living there
i got yelled at for making a joke about this ealier so that's horrible that family had to deal with pizza getting thrown on their house. No jokes allowed. - S
It does have a very Pulp Fiction feel to it 👌🏻 Vince Gilligan is a Tarantino fan and you can also see it with every shot at Los Pollos Hermanos. The angle of the camera, the colors, etc.
That pizza on the roof scene is included in official bloopers I remember :)
Im watching this instead if Gordon Ramsay on Hot Ones. Thank you for uploading so often.
BOOM!!!!!! Hot Ones is so great.
yes!!!
Hey.... don't you be reading these comments. Too many spoilers.
it's ok!! our mods have us covered.
It’s amazing how the cheese and pepperoni stayed on the pizza perfectly when tossed on the roof. 🏠💸💸⛏⛏
You two are really likeable 👍 I've been chillin watching these breaking bads for way too long though 😄
“Those boys from Juarez” means the cartels. There is a huge cartel presence in Juarez. The show creators throw these little details in and don’t spell everything out because they didn’t want to fall into the trap most shows do of assuming the audience is dumb and needs everything explained through exposition.
Nice shirt, Nikki! Navy really suits you.
Great call by Steven on Jesse's plan!! haha

That first scene was so typical!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂
Heisenberg isn't a split personality, it's just a name. It's not something he turns on and off. That's fully Walt making those choices. Going into this business has affected and developed the kind of person Walt's becoming.

Sounds as if you and Walt are very close to each other.
@@OG_Fernando what??
@@bwolf2076 At this point of the season, 1st time watchers don't know what's up with Walt. Perhaps it is a split personality or maybe he's having the effects of Meth entering his system (my theory), etc. We just don't know...yet you make it seem as if you know Walt personally...which is why i made a sarcastic reply :-)
You guys to the best reactions on this series . Thank you
That scene of Mike and his daughter is adorable to me
1:49 "They're responsible for what, three drug dealers' deaths?"
Statistically speaking, there were probably 1 or 2 drug dealers on that plane :P 🏡💵🙍♂️🙍♂️🔪
🏠💰🔨 (looks like an axe to me 😉)+👥+💩 There you go and with bonus, YOOO!
Vince Gilligan had to tweet out to get people to stop throwing pizza on the roof of the house that the external shots of Walt's house were filmed.
Listen, I was legitimately hoping this would come out before work, and it made it! I have to leave in about 35 minutes, and this is 30 minutes long
Great episode I can’t wait to see your reactions for the rest of the series.
12:56 My heart was ripping apart for Skyler in this part. She's been backed into a corner by Walt. She can't tell anyone about him unless she wants to detonate her family for good, yet everyone is seeing her as a bitch in the situation when she really isn't.
I love how Mikes name isn’t revealed until season 4. It would be so crazy to watch better call Saul first.
Sounds similar to Immortal Technique's "Dance with the Devil" -
"They told him any motherfucking coward can sell drugs
Any bitch nigga with a gun, can bust slugs
Any nigga with a red shirt can front like a blood
Even Puffy smoked a motherfucker up in a club
But only a real thug can stab someone till they die
Standing in front of them, staring straight into their eyes"
g henry I completely agree. There was this couple that did br ba reactions a long time ago. A anorexic guy with a ditzy girlfriend. She would just CONSTANTLY 2nd guess and call bs on the show just cause. Probably just trying to compensate for the fact that she was ugly as hell
