Mya is so underrated, but Aaliyah takes the cake. Although Aaliyah doesn't get credit for it, her voice was rich and could hit all kinds of notes and tones. They were each other true rivals tho. They were the pretty little dancers while Brandy and Monica were the perfect betties and good girls. Aaliyah and Mya was under the Janet influence and Brandy and Monica were under the Whitney Houston influence. Imo all were great.

Aaliyah won for me overall but Mya was a MUCH more confident vocalist - I would have loved to have seen Aaliyah's vocal evolution and growth cuz as this video shows she had a lot of potential.
Mya was a much better performer too. A lot of her notes in this video were directly after she did a high-pace dance sequence. So her breath control is really good. However I don't consider Mya a vocalist, but more like an ambitious singer/dancer who took efforts to get better. She deserves props for that. Aaliyah however is a vocalist (imo), and it's even obvious listening to her as a child. Her tone was very silky and fluid. Now her stage presence was lacking, (though she had swag). Her vocal delivery was poor and underwhelming. All she really needed was time to grow as a confident performer and develop constant sharpening of her skills. With the audience being as critical as they were of her, that could have diminished her confidence even more.

I agree. Aaliyah had the talent, but she really lacked the confidence.. Some of her best vocals aren't even her live performances, but her live acapellas.
Aaliyah was even shy in the studio, Missy even said that Aaliyah couldn't even record a song unless the lights were turned off
Angelfully I think Aaliyah would of done great on Aol sessions those type of shows. Also even though her voice worked great on Timbalands tracks reproducing those sounds live was a challenge. I think she had all the potential there but the confidence was lacking perhaps if she had the opportunity to work with Whitney on Sparkle she could of given her some guidance. I would not say her vocal delivery was poor because live she did have some shining moments especially when she was in head voice.

Aaliyah's voice is more smooth and her ranges are better.
Mya’s runs were better, but I love Aaliyah’s music more. It was pretty much personal and even though she didn’t write it, they understood her 🤷🏽♂️
At the time of Aaliyahs death she was a far better vocalist. The thing with Aaliyah was that people underrate her or overrate her..she wasn’t a powerhouse like Whitney or Mariah but she could hold her own..she is more of a Vanessa Williams or Diana Ross kinda singer

From a vocal standpoint, Mya had more confidence in her voice, her live vocals were more consistent. However Aaliyah had the better voice imo, she just let her stage fright get the best of her. Aaliyah on a good day>>mya. Her best vocals outclasses myas.

Its no excuses. As far as power goes, Mya is weaker. Anyone with an actual ear can hear as Mya reaches for higher notes, her voice thins out quicker, while Aaliyah’s voice could sustain her tone and belt stronger notes.
As a Aaliyah fan though Mya wins in vocals Aaliyah voice gets deep when she sings live she was learning though but obviously neither are vocalists just entertainers
I respect your opinion, but you proved my point with your comment. Aaliyah could go deep with her voice and bring it back high to that same tone mya does, but mya could go no where near as low as Aaliyah. Aaliyah has more range and power.

Aaliyah had a fuller tone and more flexibility between registers. He voice also had a vary mature quality to it rooted in her vary developed sense of execution. Essentially, she had a grown woman's voice and the poise to match. A real loss. Forever missed.
I prefer Aaliyah's tone, she had so much more to her voice than we ever got hear, but always displays so much quality in every part of her voice.
You can tell as the years went on Aaliyah started becoming alil more confident with singing live. if her team would have worked with her more and if she used that same energy and confidence that she used in the studio. she wouldve been amazing. I would've loved to see what type of artist she would be today. I loved her still do Sleep In Paradise Baby Girl.

Aaliyah had a powerful full voice. I wish she would have used that part of her voice more in her studio recordings. Baby girl had some pipes. But I definitely loved her sweet and smooth falsetto as well.

Aaliyah. Her voice was still developing, while Mya's peaked in terms of range and power. Aaliyah would have been a powerhouse by now, and she was definitely more technical, and had a crazy range.

Aaliyah had an amazing tone to her voice and gifted range that she could mix really effortlessly. However, she struggle with where to place her voice within her broad range which often caused her placement to be all over the place. Also, she underutilized her range.
Mya used her voice well and maximized on her range. However, she has a very light lyric voice with very limited range. Aaliyah, simply had a better instrument to work with.
After watching HOURS of videos of both of their live performances; EASILY Mya in EVERY category.
Mya today has grown vocally and matured and knows her strengths and weaknesses.
I think Mya is also good in her own right, but Aaliyah takes the cake for me 🍰
Mya has gotten WAAAY better. Her more recent performances u can see her growth. Her problem is when she gets lazy she slips into their whiny voice. When she's not dancing and more focused she can definitely give you some amazing belts and riffs and runs.
This was a really good video. I'm not a biased person and I give credit where credit is due. Both aaliyah and mya are pretty even in my opinion but I'll give the slight edge to aaliyah. Aaliyah had more depth in her voice where she could hit great low notes and longer head notes. Mya's voice would start to thin a little bit quicker than aaliyah's when she hits the head notes. Aaliyah also had better live ballads in the 90's. Today, mya can fuckin' blow. Her voice has improved drastically over the years. Watch her Australia performance on sunset back in 2011. She slayed "lady marmalade".

Aaliyah's voice is definitely stronger but mya's confidence and vocal training made her notes sound better but when aaliyah's on it she can sing circles around mya as seen in the last clip of The One I Gave My Heart To, had aaliyah had a chance for someone to work on developing her stage presence and getting confidence in going for her notes she could've been an awesome entertainer the potential was there, she just needed time to grow, mya on the other hand its a crime how underrated she is, she should be the female Usher right now

Aaliyah has a naturally beautiful voice that would have been crazy today!! Aaliyah had a smooth unique sounding voice with crazy range. Mya voice seemed a tad bit stronger and she has improved with time yet not really standing out from the average R&B singer that's not on Whitney level..I was more drawn to Aaliyah's angelic vocals!!

i like liyahs tone better. but for the most part, she always looks nervous when singing live. she very rarely sounds like she does in her albums. she rarely does all the falsettos and rifts that she does on the records live. i would love to see her grown as a live performer.
Aaliyah looked nervous because she was a nervous wreck performing live she does sound like the record live and better provided she was comfortable or there was no audience.

thats my point. when she is in front of a live studio audience, the quality was not there. she danced great, but the quality of her vocals were not good. i am a fan, and been one since the 2nd album.( was an adult when she first came out but wasnt feeln her image until she turned 18 and released the second album.) i noticed it when she did the rounds of the late night shows and morning shows with her last album. always look flawless but not always sound flawless. but nevertheless, she always had that "it" factor.

It when dancing was added that things could go South but there are performances where she got it all together singing and dancing it was all there she just lacked the confidence.

I can think of few singers with better voices than Aaliyah but it didn't matter because Aaliyah just had that IT factor that made you not care about what other female singers could do, you really could not take your attention off her back then. It was something extremely special about her. Mya has great voice but Aaliyah was special like once in a life time special.

Aaliyah took it in this video but I think overall they tie. Aaliyah had a warmer tone than Mya but Mya seemed a bit cleaner in her upper chest belts. It would be interesting to see their lows and falsetto/head voice compared.
