As a creative professional I immedietly fell in love with the surface studio the second I saw it for the first time, but the price and limited performance basically rules it out completely for my work. Please Microsoft, I'm begging you, make a more powerful version or a monitor out of this thing. I need this in my life.

@@mkm_ I understand the intent, I think the reason it annoys me is because it has the opposite effect on me. I've hardly watched any LTT videos since they changed their thumbnail and title style. I think it's because they just don't grab me, I prefer knowing what the video is about, especially when I only see the title through a push notification. Now that every title is so vague and uninformative as to what content is in the video the LTT videos always loose out to other videos in my recommend.

Thats what happens when your design team uses a photocopier to "create" vs designs something from scratch to beat the competition. The 1min they spent copying Apples iMac and then putting worse hardware and even less upgradability in it amazes me. The ONLY thing this thing has going for it is the touch screen, if only Windows 10 wasnt so bad at touch.
Because touchscreen is super expensive. 3200$ for a 32" touchscreen will left you with 1500$ for a GTX1070, 1TB NVMe drive, a quad-core processor, 32 GB of RAM, and the hinge for the display plus the necessary design cost....

So much so that I actually watched all WWDC events of the past 20 years on TH-cam and so I know almost all products of Apple. I'm not just a moaning bitch that loves to hate Apple. Now coming to the display side, yes this display isn't aimed for me, and instead aimed for filmmakers, not even TH-camrs. But that doesn't change the fact that the stand is literally overpriced. Yes it could beat all other monitor stands by it's enormous flexibility (it's Apple), but that doesn't justify it's cost. Now the Pro Display XDR may not be overpriced but this monitor doesn't have any of the I/O that professional displays need. Only tech TH-camrs will buy this.
@@21dazzer moreover go take a look at the Asus ProArt PA32UCX which actually has everything Apple offers with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1152 dimming zones(that's double that of the Apple's display). The only downgrade is the resolution which is still 4k and it's more than enough for many people. It's just $3000.
Fantastic review Linus. You touched on many of the points I had in regards to the insanely low power for such a high bandwidth display. I also feel that Microsoft is purposefully not including a way to send another input to the screen because they don't want people to use the monitor past the life of the PC for other things because I'll admit the screen is absolutely gorgeous and very color accurate. The price though is absolutely insane for what you get. It's like you're paying $3000 for the screen and $1000 for the computer attached to it and even that is a stretch in most regards. The only reason I would own one would be for drawing since it's not nearly strong enough to edit video which is sad considering how gorgeous and high resolution the screen is.
After I got a $500 Chinese Tablet with the best screen you could get on a top of the line Surface, I have to wonder if there isn't a Chinese vendor out there who could grab the OEM Studio Monitor and repackage it.

@@bludwine2309 theoretically you could go into the file for the operating system and find the driver(s) that runs the screen. Then find a way around the read-only copy protection and put said driver(s) on a USB stick to install on a better computer. Theoretically anyway. Whether or not that would be practical or even possible remains to be seen.
@@phinix250 there is a big problem here. microsoft released this product lineup to compete with apple, so they can't sell the screen as a standalone product because doing so would mean that people would just buy the screen and hook that up to whichever apple device they are using, instead of completely switching to wondows.
They can't be price competitive with it. It's the total build out that makes them a profit. They are running last gen internals for a reason. And really, there are only a few programs I can think of that wouldn't run perfectly fine on that and those programs don't benefit much from a touchscreen to begin with. Everything that does could make good use of that machine. Much better than the first version.
Rumor has it that they will be selling the monitors separately in 2019. And i agree with you on everything here. and while i don't think the price is entirely justified, i still want one so badly. Drawing and video editing is all i really do also. I just can never afford this think unfortunately

I recently went to order more HP desktops for work as we've just taken on some new staff, only to have HP tell me that they have no processors from Intel and have no timeframe as to when they'll get more. To make matters worse, we need to replace a stand-alone server which is in one of the offices. Processors? HP says NOPE. This is HP ENTERPRISE telling me they have NO components and that they're in a production halt. I'm not surprised that Microsoft had to underspec this thing. If they cant get processors from Intel and HP cant, then AMD is going to stomp Intel into oblivion in the next 12 months. No business is going to wait for Intel to get their shit together, they'll just move parts vendors. AMD has a compelling product, even if the IPC is marginally lower. Swapping to AMD for any OEM is a far better idea than not selling anything because they're still waiting for Intel to work out how to make things.
It would take a few months of engineering buts thats probably done, and just test, but especially zen 2 which is made by tsmc won't have that issue, For all of TSMC's faults the ability to scale is not one of them.
Microsoft just did it, not choosing AMD and instead put an older generation chip in their product. So I guess they want to wait instead of using AMD. Very sad to see this happen.

@@isthisnametaken978 Smaller base with inferior hardware is super useful for graphic design company. Remember, these things will usually be bought in bulk and used in an office. I think they should have went for a Ryzen CPU on account of the productivity focus, but it makes sense based on what market they're trying to breach. A touch screen like this + hardware that can handle Photoshop and illustrator is in no way a bad deal for 4200, as it'd usually put a company behind by the price of a Mac Pro + Wacom touchscreen. (3,5k + 2,5k). Essentially, if you're a graphic designer, this thing is half the price of the competition, yet does its job just as well.

Personally I would recommend Flux over the native windows night mode, since with the recent versions, flux works really nicely in a totally seamless way. But yes, windows does have one, and it surprised me that no one caught that error.
Even if you can do something like that, you'd still need drivers for it to run on any other system. Since the only major issue with the hardware is the CPU (for the kind of tasks this thing is designed for anyway.) You could theoretically de-solder the CPU, then take a better CPU with compatible form factor (like from a high end laptop or something) and solder that in it's place. Such a mod would require an absolutely masterful solder job to have any chance of not bricking the CPU or the motherboard, but theoretically it's possible.
Well i have a iMac It would have costed more if I bought all the stuff on its own (not including i had to buy windows for 100 dollars) it would have costed a little more
They're not quite there. I personally have several issues with mine, though they are mostly driver related, and their battery free pens need a lot more work with their internals. Sensitivity is inconsistent, as well as button detection
The surface line of products have a problem with the digitizer. When you take the pen off of the display it still thinks the pen is on the display for a second. This can cause hooks at the end quickly drawn lines. This is fine for taking notes, but is unexceptionable for drawing and design.
@@funkman98 It's definitely there. Even when taking notes, it can make writing seem "off". It's no deal breaker, but at such high prices you kind of want better.

Thank you for saying this! Your last point about how it should just be a monitor is what I've been saying for years! This oversight completely cuts into their own sales. As an engineer I'd love this thing but if I can't attach my >$1500 tower to it, I'm not buying it 🤷♀️
One cool thing about using an iPad Pro with an iMac (or any Mac), is that you can use the iPad Pro as both a Wacom Tablet-like device or as a 2nd or 3rd monitor, or both at the same time. I use a 12.9” iPad Pro connected to my older Mac Pros as a input device with the Apple Pencil to write music notation and its input is very fast and responsive. You can also use the iPad Pros with a Windows PC as a Wacom style tablet. Try it out if you have one. You might need a cheap app called Duet, on the iOS App Store but it’s well worth the money (it’s cheap and rock solid).
I ask this about Apple and I'll ask the same thing about Microsoft; why is this 'computer integrated directly into a monitor' form factor supposed to make sense for professionals again? I would much rather a small form factor tower (like a mini itx or micro atx) with superior upgrade-ability and serviceability that I can easily just stick behind my monitor of choice. I can understand a company (especially one with a sleek, modern corporate buikding) wanting something that looked like this for reception or something, but why would people doing serious work want it? It's a desktop, portability isn't a concern, and you should have plenty of space in any kind of proper professional setting to fit a small tower. Just why? I don't understand it.
because "aesthetics" plays a role in the office "look and feel". Quite silly I know, but it impresses clients that visit, and also attracts talent when they see you have the "cool shit". This applies of course more to creative media agencies, and less to engineering firms. I think the surface desktop could be made a lot more powerful, upgradeable and serviceable while still looking sexy in one package. There's no real reason why the base should be so small. It could be made bigger to house more powerful hardware without affecting its aesthetics much.
For some people looking good comes first. We don't really associate with these people since we just want to get stuff done effectively first, but bless their hearts they can live that way if they want to. I'm just not helping them when they complain about inadequacy. I'll just say, told ya so. If you care about function get a real computer. Until then, no help.

8:50 Speaking as an artist, im not sure if your simply not aware or You just forgot, but Wacom tablets are in actuality *EXTREMELY* overpriced, they had a monopoly on the drawing tablet scene for quite some time and they abused their power. Drawing tablets are a niche product, and seeing as how a great many artist's depended on these screens for their work and literally had nowhere else to go to get a product of similar function and quality, wacom jacked up the prices for their screens in some cases almost 4x, wacom is literally the apple of the drawing tablet space, thankfully nowadays you can get equally and sometimes superior drawing screens for nearly half the price of any given wacom tablet. TLDR: Microsoft are a bunch of dicks and their surface pro has no reason to be this overpriced, don't buy this unless your a trendy, hipster, art major with more money than brains, trying to flex.
cecollins68 I bought a very simple graphic tablet from them back in 2014, checked 4 years later and the next generation of that tablet - no new features added and same dimensions as the old one - costs 150% of what the predecessor costed. It's ridiculous.

But I must admit that is a very clean and crispy looking device, I'm torn lol In my honest opinion though if you must have a portable drawing device the surface line of tablets will do just nicely, or you can go the cheapo route like I did and use a Samsung tablet that comes with the S-PEN the play store has some very good drawing apps currently avalible, spending a Crapton of money on a drawing screen is not going to help you draw better so it's best to go with what you can honestly afford.

There's nothing I regret more than buying my Surface Book 2. If it's not an Xbox, I don't trust Microsoft with hardware anymore. Ended up being such a mess of disappointment.
Geez, I spent half of that $4200, and got a cinebench of 1422 without OC'ing. While also getting a battery backup, AIO, Monitor, Peripherals, and a GoPro Hero 7 Silver. And this was all at local shops on Vancouver Island. Come On Microsoft. I know its a year and a half later... but I only got a 2nd gen Ryzen 3 3200g which is quad core, not hyperthreaded.

@@21dazzer see, I'm not an Apple hater. I love Apple more than any other company. So much so that I actually watched all WWDC events of the past 20 years on TH-cam and so I know almost all products of Apple. I'm not just a moaning bitch that loves to hate Apple.
Now coming to the display side, yes this display isn't aimed for me, and instead aimed for filmmakers, not even TH-camrs. But that doesn't change the fact that the stand is literally overpriced. Yes it could beat all other monitor stands by it's enormous flexibility (it's Apple), but that doesn't justify it's cost.
Now the Pro Display XDR may not be overpriced but this monitor doesn't have any of the I/O that professional displays need. Only tech TH-camrs will buy this.
@@21dazzer moreover go take a look at the Asus ProArt PA32UCX which actually has everything Apple offers with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1152 dimming zones(that's double that of the Apple's display). The only downgrade is the resolution which is still 4k and it's more than enough for many people. It's just $3000.
Fantastic review Linus. You touched on many of the points I had in regards to the insanely low power for such a high bandwidth display. I also feel that Microsoft is purposefully not including a way to send another input to the screen because they don't want people to use the monitor past the life of the PC for other things because I'll admit the screen is absolutely gorgeous and very color accurate. The price though is absolutely insane for what you get. It's like you're paying $3000 for the screen and $1000 for the computer attached to it and even that is a stretch in most regards. The only reason I would own one would be for drawing since it's not nearly strong enough to edit video which is sad considering how gorgeous and high resolution the screen is.
After I got a $500 Chinese Tablet with the best screen you could get on a top of the line Surface, I have to wonder if there isn't a Chinese vendor out there who could grab the OEM Studio Monitor and repackage it.
You can always leverage it with an external GPU...I mean, they want $3,000 right? OH WAIT

there is a big problem here.
microsoft released this product lineup to compete with apple, so they can't sell the screen as a standalone product because doing so would mean that people would just buy the screen and hook that up to whichever apple device they are using, instead of completely switching to wondows.
They can't be price competitive with it. It's the total build out that makes them a profit. They are running last gen internals for a reason. And really, there are only a few programs I can think of that wouldn't run perfectly fine on that and those programs don't benefit much from a touchscreen to begin with. Everything that does could make good use of that machine. Much better than the first version.

I recently went to order more HP desktops for work as we've just taken on some new staff, only to have HP tell me that they have no processors from Intel and have no timeframe as to when they'll get more. To make matters worse, we need to replace a stand-alone server which is in one of the offices. Processors? HP says NOPE. This is HP ENTERPRISE telling me they have NO components and that they're in a production halt.
I'm not surprised that Microsoft had to underspec this thing. If they cant get processors from Intel and HP cant, then AMD is going to stomp Intel into oblivion in the next 12 months. No business is going to wait for Intel to get their shit together, they'll just move parts vendors. AMD has a compelling product, even if the IPC is marginally lower. Swapping to AMD for any OEM is a far better idea than not selling anything because they're still waiting for Intel to work out how to make things.
It would take a few months of engineering buts thats probably done, and just test, but especially zen 2 which is made by tsmc won't have that issue, For all of TSMC's faults the ability to scale is not one of them.
Microsoft just did it, not choosing AMD and instead put an older generation chip in their product. So I guess they want to wait instead of using AMD. Very sad to see this happen.

@@isthisnametaken978 Smaller base with inferior hardware is super useful for graphic design company. Remember, these things will usually be bought in bulk and used in an office. I think they should have went for a Ryzen CPU on account of the productivity focus, but it makes sense based on what market they're trying to breach. A touch screen like this + hardware that can handle Photoshop and illustrator is in no way a bad deal for 4200, as it'd usually put a company behind by the price of a Mac Pro + Wacom touchscreen. (3,5k + 2,5k). Essentially, if you're a graphic designer, this thing is half the price of the competition, yet does its job just as well.

Personally I would recommend Flux over the native windows night mode, since with the recent versions, flux works really nicely in a totally seamless way. But yes, windows does have one, and it surprised me that no one caught that error.

Is it not possible to disassemble this thing and solder the monitor's connector to a display port cable?
Even if you can do something like that, you'd still need drivers for it to run on any other system.
Since the only major issue with the hardware is the CPU (for the kind of tasks this thing is designed for anyway.) You could theoretically de-solder the CPU, then take a better CPU with compatible form factor (like from a high end laptop or something) and solder that in it's place.
Such a mod would require an absolutely masterful solder job to have any chance of not bricking the CPU or the motherboard, but theoretically it's possible.
The monitor almost certainly uses some variant of lvds rather than display port to communicate with the motherboard.

The surface line of products have a problem with the digitizer. When you take the pen off of the display it still thinks the pen is on the display for a second. This can cause hooks at the end quickly drawn lines. This is fine for taking notes, but is unexceptionable for drawing and design.
I have never had that problem with any of my surfaces

Even when taking notes, it can make writing seem "off". It's no deal breaker, but at such high prices you kind of want better.

One cool thing about using an iPad Pro with an iMac (or any Mac), is that you can use the iPad Pro as both a Wacom Tablet-like device or as a 2nd or 3rd monitor, or both at the same time.
I use a 12.9” iPad Pro connected to my older Mac Pros as a input device with the Apple Pencil to write music notation and its input is very fast and responsive. You can also use the iPad Pros with a Windows PC as a Wacom style tablet. Try it out if you have one. You might need a cheap app called Duet, on the iOS App Store but it’s well worth the money (it’s cheap and rock solid).
I ask this about Apple and I'll ask the same thing about Microsoft; why is this 'computer integrated directly into a monitor' form factor supposed to make sense for professionals again? I would much rather a small form factor tower (like a mini itx or micro atx) with superior upgrade-ability and serviceability that I can easily just stick behind my monitor of choice. I can understand a company (especially one with a sleek, modern corporate buikding) wanting something that looked like this for reception or something, but why would people doing serious work want it? It's a desktop, portability isn't a concern, and you should have plenty of space in any kind of proper professional setting to fit a small tower. Just why? I don't understand it.
Because tech companies think all professionals are the kind of people who make cheap Tumblr comics in their parents basement for some reason.
because "aesthetics" plays a role in the office "look and feel". Quite silly I know, but it impresses clients that visit, and also attracts talent when they see you have the "cool shit". This applies of course more to creative media agencies, and less to engineering firms.
I think the surface desktop could be made a lot more powerful, upgradeable and serviceable while still looking sexy in one package. There's no real reason why the base should be so small. It could be made bigger to house more powerful hardware without affecting its aesthetics much.
For some people looking good comes first. We don't really associate with these people since we just want to get stuff done effectively first, but bless their hearts they can live that way if they want to. I'm just not helping them when they complain about inadequacy. I'll just say, told ya so. If you care about function get a real computer. Until then, no help.

Spot on Linus. Exactly how I feel about the device. I would actually consider buying it if it was "just a screen" because then I could have had it for decades. The all-in-one-nature without display input however, it actually scares me off and I won't even consider buying it.
8:50 Speaking as an artist, im not sure if your simply not aware or You just forgot, but Wacom tablets are in actuality *EXTREMELY* overpriced, they had a monopoly on the drawing tablet scene for quite some time and they abused their power. Drawing tablets are a niche product, and seeing as how a great many artist's depended on these screens for their work and literally had nowhere else to go to get a product of similar function and quality, wacom jacked up the prices for their screens in some cases almost 4x, wacom is literally the apple of the drawing tablet space, thankfully nowadays you can get equally and sometimes superior drawing screens for nearly half the price of any given wacom tablet.
TLDR: Microsoft are a bunch of dicks and their surface pro has no reason to be this overpriced, don't buy this unless your a trendy, hipster, art major with more money than brains, trying to flex.

In my honest opinion though if you must have a portable drawing device the surface line of tablets will do just nicely, or you can go the cheapo route like I did and use a Samsung tablet that comes with the S-PEN the play store has some very good drawing apps currently avalible, spending a Crapton of money on a drawing screen is not going to help you draw better so it's best to go with what you can honestly afford.

Why thinner bezels? It will be touched. The bezels help you re-adjust the display without smudging the screen.
After watching the pricing portion of the video, here's what's really happening: $4,200 - $2,500 display - $700 "OTHER" cost = $1,000... PROFIT! smh

Geez, I spent half of that $4200, and got a cinebench of 1422 without OC'ing. While also getting a battery backup, AIO, Monitor, Peripherals, and a GoPro Hero 7 Silver. And this was all at local shops on Vancouver Island. Come On Microsoft. I know its a year and a half later... but I only got a 2nd gen Ryzen 3 3200g which is quad core, not hyperthreaded.
