    About This Tutorial:
    In this video, you'll find out how to fix the Photoshop bug that makes little white lines between your pattern tiles when you paste vector (Illustrator) repeat patterns into Photoshop. It's a frustrating problem! There's actually nothing wrong with your pattern. It's a rendering issue that sometimes shows up when Photoshop converts your vector art into pixels. Luckily the solution is quick and easy. And you can do it without having to export the art into a separate file.
    I'll show you how to do it in this video and you'll also get a glimpse of the simple, easy-to-follow teaching style I use in my Skillshare course - Mockup Academy. I developed Mockup Academy classes specifically for surface pattern designers, artists, graphic designers, product designers and Etsy store owners who want to learn how to make digital product mockups from their art. I start with the basic concept and then give you simple and easy instructions to make your mock ups look ultra realistic! Learn how to use layer masks and smart objects, how to use distort and warp tools and how to master retouching tools like clone stamp, content aware fill and the patch tool. In no time you'll be creating:
    - mug mockups
    - plate mockups
    - wallpaper mockups
    - tote bag mockups
    - wall art mockups
    - clothing mockups
    and lots more.
    Here are some of the reviews from my students:
    "Just as great as a course can be, she is on top of the game and I totally recommend this course." -- Sahar H.
    "I am learning so so so much in this Academy. Clear instruction. No superfluous nothin. I would not be able to figure any of this out on my own. Excellent class." -- Marian N.
    "This is a great class! I have tried to make mockups, but this class truly made me understand how it works." -- Alicia M.
    "Every time I take one of the Mockup Academy classes I learn new techniques in Photoshop that really expand my range of tools and abilities." -- Joan C.
    "Absolutely phenomenal class. I cannot thank you enough for sharing so much information. I have a new love of creating mockups!" -- Lucy C.

    I found that Photoshop will show those annoying little white lines on any image (pixel or vector) that you want to turn into a Pattern (using the Edit > Define Pattern) EXCEPT when you leave the image the original size, preferably making the pattern from the original image, not by copying/pasting into Photoshop. I have thousands of digital Photoshop patterns that I sell and it’s worked perfect every time. BUT you must be careful to not change the original image size when making a pattern. (1) I always save the image/vector that I intend using for the pattern first (in either png/jpg/pdf). (2) I go to the folder/location where I’ve saved the image > right-click on the image filename > Open with Photoshop > Edit > Define Pattern. (3) Now the Photoshop pattern can be used in a new Photoshop file, on a layer, and can be resized and moved around as suits, with no annoying little white lines.

I fixed the problem thanks to the amazing Kris Ruff BUT I am not very good at Illustrator. Thanks to you I'm able to fix the problem AND avoid Illustrator altogether. Seriously thank you from the bottom of my heart!

      Thanks for bringing that up. Yes, there are a couple ways you can export the file to get rid of the problem too. The advantage of this method is you don’t have to create an additional file and more importantly, you can paste the art directly from Illustrator into PS as a smart object so you don’t have to worry about size/resolution issues that you might have with a jpeg.

      Oh no! I hadn't heard that yet. That's really surprising. I haven't updated to 2023 yet and probably won't for several months -- I like to give them time to work out the bugs! So once you EXPAND and MERGE, do the pattern tile lines disappear when you look at them in wire-frame mode (COMMAND --- Y)? If so, I can't imagine how they could re-appear in Photoshop. There are other fixes you can try -- like saving your filled shape as a jpg or png file and bringing that into Photoshop.

      @@krisruff5099 thanks for the responses!!!! Appreciate it!!! Here is what I am doing…I am creating images for use in my Soc6 shop. In the past, I have created a rectangle in the correct size of pixels in AI and then drag it over to my canvas in PS, already set up to the correct size. The reason for this is, Soc6 has specific sizes for each of their products. Doing this allows you to control scale and placement. I have done it this way for years, but this past week, lines all over. I used your method, but my files are so large, it takes forever and then when I drag it from AI into PS, it is scaled down in size. Doing the export to png worked, but the png is 72 dpi, and Soc6 needs 300 for quality printing. I walked away from my computer yesterday. Lol lol lol.

    • @krisruff5099
      @krisruff5099  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CrawfordKimberly Hmmm. A couple thoughts. You can specify the dpi of your png file if you use this method: Go to FILE - EXPORT - EXPORT AS. Choose PNG at the bottom of the window, click EXPORT and then choose your dpi on the next screen. This is the same method I use to create JPGs. Also, you might want to check your preferences in PS and uncheck "Resize Image During Place" (in the GENERAL tab). That should keep it from scaling down. Those are the only things I can think of without seeing the actual problems. I'm available for one-on-one consulting -- a zoom call where you share your screen and we walk through exactly what's going on and I help you find a solution. DM me if you're interested.

    Hi, thx fot this great tutorial. By the way I've a problem likely. I draw in Procreate my key object, I mean the repeating tile. Than transfering it to photoshop and arranging the full repeat here. However although I add them precisely through edeges ( either automatically or manually with snapping feature ) I have those white lines. Because the last pixel on the edge of the tile becomes somehow transparent. It takes me much time to fix it by offset feature, any help would be great. Thanks.

    • @krisruff5099
      @krisruff5099  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you're describing is a different problem (but equally frustrating). I can tell you why it happens but unfortunately not how to fix it, since it's complicated, outside my area of expertise, and quite possibly involves evil gremlins. The white lines happen when the tile size isn't an even number of pixels, for example 200 x 200 pixels. If instead, your tile measures 200.15 x 200.15 pixels, Photoshop freaks out because there's no such thing as a fraction of a pixel and tries to fix it by rounding up the measurement (to 201 x 201 pixels) and filling the extra pixel with a mix of the pattern color and the background (which is usually white or transparent). Those improvised pixels show up as gaps or white hairlines between the tiles. One thing that might help is to make your canvas size in Procreate the exact size of your tile and always use pixels instead of inches or centimeters when defining your canvas size in Procreate and/or Photoshop. And if you resize a tile, use even numbers (i.e. don't enlarge it 113.5% -- make it 110% or 120% instead). I wish I could be of more help, but hopefully that at least helps explain it.

      @@krisruff5099 Thank you so much for taking the time to answer! I found that if I first Image>Resize the original pattern, then Define Pattern, then Fill Layer into the canvas size I need, it doesn't have the faint white lines. Or as Just Jules posted to use the original image and not resize it to make the repeat pattern. I did see that one of my patterns added white lines when I tried to increase its size from the original - that didn't work (of course) but it means I can't use the pattern for what I wanted.

      @@maidensmuse5746 I totally understand your frustration. The white line problem is super annoying. It's relatively easy to explain, but hard to fix.
      The white lines are simply a measuring/math issue. Somewhere in the life of the repeat tile its size ended up with a fractional pixel. For example, let's say you had a tile measuring 651 pixels x 651 pixels. Maybe you or the original artist resized it. If it was reduced by 50% it would become 325.5 pixels x 325.5 pixels. But the problem is there's no way to render half a pixel. So Photoshop rounds the measurement up to 326 x 326 and tries to guess what color to put in the extra half pixel by blending the edge color with the background color -- which is usually white or transparent. So that 1 pixel border around the edge of the tile ends up being a lighter version of the neighboring pixel, which we perceive as a white line.
      If you purchased flawed patterns you should go back to the vendor and either ask for a refund or ask them to fix it. To find out if your purchased pattern is flawed, simply open it in PS and zoom in until you can see individual pixels. If the edge pixels don't match their neighbors, then it was not made correctly. If the edges look good, then somehow you introduced a fractional pixel while you were working with it.
      There isn't an easy way to fix a bad edge. Cropping the tile (to 325 x 325 in my example) will get rid of the line but the tiles will no longer line up correctly. Really, the only option is to manually go in and change the edge pixels so they match the neighboring pixels.
