  • Still frustrated by white tiling lines in your repeat pattern fills in Illustrator? I have solutions and helpful background information for you. In this webinar, I explain that it's caused by an anti-aliasing bug in Illustrator, with a demonstration of what anti-aliasing is. I also discuss CPU view vs. GPU view and why this makes the lines look less obvious when displaying the pattern fill in Illustrator, but unfortunately, the white lines still appear when you export from Illustrator.
The solution to the white lines when exporting pattern fills from Illustrator is to enable Art Optimized anti-aliasing in whichever export method you use.
However, if you are copying and pasting art with pattern fills from Illustrator to Photoshop, you don't have the option to choose Art Optimized anti-aliasing. Instead, you can eliminate the lines by choosing 'Paste as Layers'. This rasterizes the pattern fill without the white lines.
I also demonstrate the lines appearing in Photoshop inside Vector Smart Objects and when you paste your pattern fills as pixels. Fortunately, Adobe introduced the Paste as Layers option in Photoshop 2022, and now we have a solution to the pattern fill lines problem in Photoshop.
Can you believe this problem has existed forever in Illustrator and we still have to use workarounds to have line-free patterns? Almost 10 years ago, I published a quick video with the solution to the problem in Illustrator that has gotten over 20,000 views! I'm always learning and exploring Ai and PS, so I wanted to share what I know in 2022 :-). To see my original video about white tiling lines in Illustrator pattern fills: • Illustrator Pattern Ti...

How do i get rid of the black lines? When i create a pattern by selecting object and make, the pattern is boxed with a black line even though i remove the outline it still appears

Black lines are more likely a flaw at the edges of the pattern tile, and not caused by the anti-aliasing bug (which makes withe lines). Maybe you are using transparency, and elements are overlapping at the tile edge, or you have a black stroke around the edge of your pattern.

I am 3d artist, and I have to use AI and PS, but I'm not as familiar but our work flow requires them. Sometimes when they give us the Deco file in Ai it looks great, but for pipeline reasons I must past as smart object into PS. This when I get those white lines- when I paste from AI to PS. Since I am not exporting technically - does anyone know how I should handle this? I assume this aliasing options are still available before export... For any help I would be very very thankful! Thank you!

The white lines are happening when the pattern fill is anti-aliased in PS. If you export an image from Illustrator with pattern fills, you can choose "art optimized" which takes care of the anti-aliasing lines in the pattern fill. Smart objects in Photoshop don't offer that choice of anti-aliasing. One solution that has worked for me, is to use Paste as Layers from Illustrator to Photoshop. The pattern fill gets rasterized, but in a way that seems to work like "art optimized" and clears out the white tiling lines. To sum up: far as I know, you can't have a live Illustrator (vector) pattern fill in PS without the anti-aliasing white lines lurking... one way or another, you need to rasterize, and do it with art-optimized from Illustrator or paste as layers to PS, or define that pattern in PS. Hope that helps!
