      I'm really glad the tutorial was helpful! Although it's 2 years old, it still gets a lot of views because it's STILL the simplest, easiest way I've found :) I also recommend my follow up video: how to make a half-drop repeat with Photoshop's pattern preview: th-cam.com/video/HVqk7XW7Bug/w-d-xo.html

      Exactly! Seeing all the elements in pattern preview really saves A LOT of time! Many of my elements start as vectors so easy to export into a clean png. (She's also a great illustrator)

    Ok, I have watched literally 30 videos on how to make patterns on photoshop and NONE of them were this simple! I think some TH-camrs make their videos confusing on purpose so people have to watch them 20 times! Thank you so much for this! You just helped me take my new business to a whole new LEVEL! I appreciate you!!! ❤

      That's so sweet Cynthia, I'm glad it was helpful!! I got into patterns only last year, and I remember the hassle of trying to find an easy and straight-forward method to make patterns. I watched many videos, took Skillshare classes, etc. Some of them were like "and then you get out your calculator..." 😳 I was like heck no!! The pattern preview tool is the method I was searching for all along!

    Vow, this was fascinating!! Really useful and interesting 👍! I just bought Domestika course where the whole pattern thing was explained in a far more complicated way... I'm happy that I didn't begin struggling with that approach chopping up my elements manually but can now go right to the pattern maker. I'm a Gimp user and just beginning to learn Photoshop therefore this kind of how-to videos are very useful. And thanks for the tips on protecting my artwork, because potential misuse has been bothering me lately.

    This is by far the best pattern tutorial for PSD! I have been working all afternoon on a pattern and I have seen some pattern tutorials, using the offset filter, and other ways, but this is way easier! I really got frustrated with the offset filter, because you can't move your object manually. Thank you so much Ness! My process will take less time now! 😃

    Could you do one on color separation? Clients seem to ask for the file in layers, it would be great if you could explain that:)

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I actually don't know much about this myself, unfortunately! I work in traditional painting, which is not well compatible with screen printing and color separation. Instead of forcing this process on my art, I've decided to focus on industries and clients that do digital printing, where color separation is not needed :)

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pattern preview works best with smart objects! If your motifs are regular flat layers, they will get all messed up by Photoshop.

  • @sonjapapian2769
    @sonjapapian2769 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank u so much, this was really clear. So the size of the pattern you can always change with the scale tool to send to the custumor right?
    it don't depend on the tile size when you start making pattern.

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can, but just remember that unlike on Illustrator, in Photoshop you can't enlarge without losing quality! So it's better to start big, and size down if necessary :)

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Illustrator doesn't have the pattern preview tool. So you could put together the pattern in Photoshop with this great tool, then export the tile flat into Illustrator and do an image trace to get the vector. OR you could keep you layers in Photoshop, and convert each motif to a smart object to use the pattern preview. When you double-click on the smart object, it would open your motif in a new window with all your layers preserved for easy recoloring :)

      @ArtBusinesswithNess  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry about that! I have a Windows folder open on my second monitor, that's why you couldn't see it. My bad! So I had all my PNG files (exported previously from the method shown) opened on the side in a Windows folder, and I dragged and dropped them into the Photoshop canvas :) Photoshop imports it as a smart object by default when you drag and drop like this, which suits this method very well!

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Stephany! Unfortunately there's no easy answer to this question since every company works differently. You really have to ask every time how they want it :) I have never exported in Pantone myself but I hear there's an Adobe add-on for that. But you also don't have to cater to everyone. I decided since I paint traditionally that I won't vectorize and I won't separate colors. That's just how I work and there are more than enough companies that do digital printing to keep me more than busy :)

    Thank you so much for this detailed video tutorial. But I have a question, if you use the RGB color system, are you not afraid that the product will have color distortion when printing?

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I always export in CMYK if the pattern will be printed. But CMYK can handle most colors except a few (very vibrant, flashy). If you’re not using very bright purples or greens, that sort of thing, the colors don’t look very different in either mode, so it’s easy to export whichever you need.

    very good! Just one problem it is hard to see your moves on the photoshop screen> this is common with all the photoshop lesson on You tube. So your are talking an I cannot follow your moves because I cannot see the little arrow. I am grateful for all the steps you showed. I would like to know how to make the sell sheet with your name on it. Keep going.

    This is my first time watching your channel and I am wondering why you don't take advantage of the background remover tool. I use the one in Canva and Photoshop can do it as well. Otherwise all good. I intend to make designs for my Redbubble store, incorporating my photos as well. Will check out your Instagram channel.

      I didn't use background remover because it's the first time I hear of it 😂 Photoshop is a huge software isn't it? I've been using it for 15 years and still learn new things all the time. I'm excited to look into this background remover tool, thanks for the tip!

    How would you handle a repeat with directional lines or elements that go in one direction like up and down and left to right?

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the technique shown in this video really only works best for tossed patterns . For patterns like stripes, etc, I create my sketch directly in Photoshop so I know it repeats perfectly. Then I can print out the sketch tile or bring it into Procreate where I do my painting. I bring it back into Photoshop to make the tile repeat once more. It can be a bit tricky with textured backgrounds and such, but I've refined the technique since last year, I should make another tutorial for that!

    Please help me with making a template for a sale sheet. I also love the way you organize your work into a data sheet. Could you show me how. I am sorry to be a pest but I really like what you do and I want to be better. I would appreciate this very much.

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this video, the pattern I'm demonstrating is actually all done in traditional gouache! So no special brushes were used. Whenever I do use brushes, I use Kyle Webster brushes (which are free with the Creative Cloud)

    Hello! After applying pattern in new document when we low down the scale and we use pattern preview it showed lines. I don't know why? May you pls tell me?

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a common problem when changing the scale of a pattern. The best way is to create the pattern in the final size you want it, or exactly 2x as big. If you create a random size and scale it down, you can end up with half pixels on all sides and that's what creates the lines.

      Unless it's a bug or malfunction of your version of Photoshop, the only other explanation is that you're not using smart objects for your motifs. A simple raster layer might create issues with pattern preview. You can right click each layer and transform them into smart objects to avoid this!

    What if my photoshop doesn’t have pattern preview

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  ปีที่แล้ว

      Pattern preview is only available to Photoshop CC 2021 and all versions since. If you're a subscriber of the Creative Cloud, make sure to update to the latest version at no additional cost to get this feature. If you are not a subscriber and have a copy of an older version, unfortunately it will not have this tool.

    If somebody is having a problem, that the option "Pattern preview" is GRAYED OUT and can't be checked, there is a fix: When creating a new document, don't create it with an artboard

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ohhh that makes sense that this function would not be compatible with artboards. Thanks for the tip!!

    13:15 is where she talks about how you make a pattern in photoshop if you want to skip the "how to create an image from scratch, this is what I do to use to create details in an image, I use this method to draw, I eat at this restaurant (just kidding), and then use it as a pattern"
    The Pattern Preview is a good point to make, but there's a lot of information that should be put into a different video because this drags out the basic "How to create a pattern" into an almost 20 minute video. Good info though.

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The explanation of how to use pattern preview start at 6:15 not 13:15. The time code you gave is for when I explain how to export the pattern tile after you're finished making the pattern. But hey you should make your own tutorial that gets straight to the point if that's how you like it - but fair warning you'll get a thousand questions in the comments about all the steps you skipped 🙃
