    As a cis man taking T (gender affirming care! YAY!) I can confirm. No crushed larynx.
    Also it helps a bit with my depression.
    That said, it has not made me immune from threats of violence from other cis men, which, unfortunately, even cis men face.

      No no no, see, the crushing is why your voice drops at puberty! Back when the church used to castrate its best boy sopranos, it was common to see larynxes that had been allowed to expand naturally without testosterone, and they were often so large that they had to be supported by a special brace. (This is 100% factual and in no way something I pulled out of my ass while waiting for the pots to soak, lol.)

    I think the most aggravating misconception I've ever come across, was being told "I'm afraid that you going on testosterone will make you more angry/violent." Like, completely disregarding my personality and the experiences the person had had with me up to that point, and just assuming that testosterone was going to turn me into a completely different person. It was actually quite insulting. I've been on T for a few years now, and you know what? Sure, maybe I am a little more free with my emotions, but that's honestly not because of testosterone. That's because I have people around me who aren't constantly telling me that any emotional reaction I have is me being "too sensitive" or "overreacting". So like, no, being on T does not automatically make you more aggressive or violent.

    • @CorwinFound
      @CorwinFound 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +64

      One thing I've experienced is that I'm more likely to be _perceived_ as angry, even when I'm not.
      I experienced a rather significant voice change. Myself and my son (now 15, 12 when I started testosterone) had to work through that and it took time. As an example, I'd ask him if he'd done his homework, not angry or annoyed, just checking as parents do, and he'd get upset because I _sounded_ angry to him. Not that I was using an angry tone but my masc voice compared to my fem voice sounded much gruffer I guess and he perceived that as annoyance, not just the new voice.
      I've had this also with women in my life who knew me pre transition, sister and mom mostly, but not so much with women I've met since transitioning. My theory is that knowing what I sounded like before, then compared to post voice change, if sounds angry/annoyed/gruff but when a new person meets me, with no comparison, it's just a guy voice.
      Hope this makes sense.

      Trans guy here who was on T for 18 months, stopped for 18 months (complicated reasons) and now back on T for about 8 months.
      Testosterone can cause more painful periods until they stop, absolutely can cause more generalized pelvic pain outside of periods, and if you stop testosterone, when/if the periods come back, they can include pretty brutal period cramping.
      I've experienced all these things. That said, part of my experience with this is because I did stop T for 1.5 years and then went back on. There is no literature that indicates any negative risks with stopping and starting testosterone (beyond the existing risks of starting HRT). And the pelvic pain I experienced when I started T the second time only lasted about 4 months and was only truly bad for about 6-8 weeks.
      If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask. I've kinda simplified some of this stuff.

      Love this for you! Wish you all the best in getting access (I'm in the US, so I see you).
      From my personal experience as a trans man who's been on T for over 5 years now, it's important to listen to your doctors AND to advocate for yourself.
      My doctor was very upfront about risks and side effects, so I knew what I was getting into. But I made sure to be clear that I'm also epileptic and was concerned about potential risks in that arena. So my doctor, because there really hasn't been much study into FTM epileptic, suggested a weekly dosing cycle at lower amounts instead of the more common bi-weekly dosing at higher amounts. We also started me at a lower dose just in general and later down the line added an aromatase inhibitor instead of upping the T.
      Definitely advocate for yourself when you're able to start medical transition.

      Okay look, I was also severly bullied when I was a teen, and I'm afraid of them. Like, teenagers walking in the streets laughing? I have to work on not having a fucking panic attack right there. Is my trauma real and horrible? Yes. Was it caused by teenagers? Yes. Am I in constant danger wherever teenagers exist, are they an especially dangerous group of people who I should constantly be afraid of? No.
      I get forming your world around your fears, I really do, and there is statistical evidence that men are more likely to be of danger to women. But like, those same statistics show that most men aren't a danger to anyone. Treating half of human population as a threat I mean... that's such an exhausting world to live in, to constantly be afraid and convinced people will hurt you unless you stay far away from them. I would know, I've been there too.
      That trauma is best handled with a good therapist instead of trying to fearmonger others buying into a worldview built purely on trauma and misery

      Its interesting because as a vet one of the treatments for overly aggressive dogs is to neuter them. It should be noted that it really only works for younger dogs that are not fully adults yet. I do believe this is more to do with puberty and the sudden change in hormones in a young dog rather than testosterone itself (like a moody teenager). Learned behaviors are still going to be there post castration but its still done as a last resort. How I interpret that is that having higher testosterone can predispose to aggressive behaviors especially if its encouraged or there is a lack of training for dogs. Now IDK if this can be translational to humans but I feel like a lot of aggression and anger is learned behaviors or at least people that were not properly raised to deal with their negative emotions.

    The way these people see it, AMAB and AFAB bodies are virtually different species. The idea that cells are just cells, tissues are just tissues, and hormones are just hormones, is impossible to them. They accuse us of believing in "immaterial gendered souls," but they're the ones who believe in immaterial gendered souls. They will look at tissues or organs or hormones that are identical in form and function and act like they're magically different because their owners have different chromosomes or something.
    The stuff Jamie's reacting to reminds me of some people's reaction to trans women breastfeeding. There is no meaningful biological distinction between a cis woman or a trans woman using an induced lactation protocol to breastfeed an infant she didn't birth. The cells are just cells. The breast tissue is just breast tissue. The milk ducts are just milk ducts. Research indicates the milk is nutritionally similar to that of cis women. So they just deny physical reality instead and pretend all of that isn't true.

      Are you kidding me right now. No one knows what the consequences of feeding an infant with this stuff. It's an INFANT. His or her brain development literally depends on the milk he/she drinks. It's all the baby eats. They have one source of nutrition at this age, a mother's milk. Formula carefully made could sufficient, although it's not as good as mother's milk. But this thing? It doesn't have enough nutrients to be fed on alone, we know that at least, and who knows what all the hormones and medications do? Who knows if that doesn't harm the baby? The development of the baby, the development of the baby's brain? Do you think this is a game? This could have severe ramifications for the baby. You are gambling on this kid's life and you don't give a shit. More important to validate the trans women. Disgusting.

    • @saoirse2963
      @saoirse2963 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, not different species, difference sexes. A cell is not just a cell, we have different cells in our body that function differently and have different programs, purposes and qualities. Women's (females') breasts and men's (males') breasts are not the same, and it's not just the fat. They are structured differently. Our bodies are the result of millions of years of evolution, and there are so many thing about the human body we don't understand. Females of all mammals are the ones who feed their young with their milk, never the males. So actually, there is a huge different between a female and a male who take estrogen in levels his male body is not supposed to have and use drugs to induce lactating artificially. Infant's nutrition is extremely important to the child future development. The baby could grow up to have severe developmental issues, including mental and physical issues, or even die, if he/she is fed only on this "milk" artificially made from a male and this "milk" is lacking in some crucial substance.
      It's not funny at all, there are infants who died and infants who grow up suffering severe development issues, because they had been drinking formula that lacked a single component due to defect in the manufacturing. There could be severe consequences for this and life could be ruined, and for what? You'd think a growing man would think of the future of his baby and not of his own validation. There is no justification for it.

HOWEVER! i already have longstanding issues with these things. i finally managed (wow it's already been a year ago now) to get a bipolar disorder diagnosis. i have other diagnoses and wish to pursue more care to be sure i am not missing any pieces. you are GOING to experience changes when you switch to having a completely different dominant hormone than what is your norm. but nobody is the same, and anyone can have a different reaction than you.

    Assuming this is from a detransitioner, I think it's actually a really great study of dysphoria and why access to gender affirming care is so important. If this person thought they were a trans man and started to medically transition and then started experiencing all the things on this list, it sounds like they were experiencing dysphoria. Like, that's what dysphoria feels like. This person is just giving stronger evidence that this is why people need access to HRT

    A good analogy I heard was comparing T and E to glasses for shortsighted and farsighted people.
    I myself am shortsighted I would not benefit from farsighted glasses, quite the opposite in fact. Though others will very much appreciate that there are farsighted glasses as that's what they need.
    People who have good eyesight don't have a use for either, and then there are also people who live their entire life with bad eyesight and think that's just normal, doesn't negate the fact that they would greatly benefit from glasses.
    And posts like this are basicslly: If you have bad eyesight don't wear glasses, it'll hurt your eyes even more. And I think that's sad

    i think we need to speak more about how gender affirming care isnt just for trans people and how most of it started off as helping cis people (eg. plastic surgery aka gender affirming surgery, hormone treatment bc some cis peoples bodies dont work how they were supposed to, puberty blockers bc some cis children had issues with puberty happening sooner than it was supposed to so they needed to pause that somehow) basically surgeries that were made to help cis people evolved to also help trans people or simply was used for more than it was originally intented for 👍
    (ALSO i mean talking about it more to educate transphobic ppl bc we have already tried defending it and explaining how it isnt as harmful as they claim it is and they dont really listen so we should also mention how cis ppl also get those treatments for their issues and actually used more and for longer than they were for trans people...and how that hasn't been an issue)

    • @viverra
      @viverra 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Yes, this is a big issue. For instance, puberty blockers have been used for years to stop kids from undergoing premature puberty. But all of a sudden, giving them to trans kids is "experimental" and is currently forbidden in the UK.
      Breast augmentation (or reduction) is a routine procedure in the US, even on teens. (And yes, Dolly Parton's chest was the result of gender-affirming surgery.) But it's suddenly controversial if a legal adult who is trans wants it.
      Plastic surgeries of all sorts, likewise. And other surgeries. Urethral lengthening to correct hypospadias is routine - but suddenly it's horrifying and experimental if the procedure is done on a trans man.

    It is NOT like this for everyone. But this is my story.
    I wonder if my body simply did not do well on estrogen. I did have estrogen based breast cancer.

      @KxNOxUTA 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cis women have testosterone, too. And cis men sometimes have too little. It's not so much gender related, but how all setups of people require that a balance exists :'D So all the hormones need to be there in sufficient amount and in the right relation each other in order to work well.
      This said: I know that it may feel convenient to not feel things, especially when you suffer with depression, but there are very very very profound problems and long-term effects that come with that, too. :'D What you want, is a better balance in which you can properly feel your feelings. It's like "not feeling physical pain" know what happens to those people? They are constantly at risk of injury and death, because they cannot tell when damage is happening to them. In the same manner, disconnection to your feelings AND over-connection to your feelings will both be harmful and blind-side you to being able to make healthy decisions for yourself.
      It may be worth discussing this with your doctor and see if you need slight adjustments to assure you are still in touch with your warning signals. Men as a group are known to suffer generalised alexithymia and you see how men as a group are filling all sorts of one-sided negative statistics that way. Being poorly in touch with your emotions results in a lot of significant damage to individuals and society than we are brave enough to acknowledge at the current point in time

    Why?
    Well, because I'm a stable groom with A LOT of heavy work that takes a toll on my body. Sure, an increased sex drive would be welcome too, but certaintly not as much as a better chance for my work tool - aka my body - to stay stronger and more active and agile for longer.

Hope this helps, stay strong, we can get through this.

    • @hannajung7512
      @hannajung7512 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      You need to first try and get help. Any professional counseling will do as a start, if its with a trans affirming counselor then even better. But this is a lot to go through and and deciver all alone. When you are not sure if you can talk to your mother about that topic, maybe she wlll still support you getting counseling, when you tell her that you struggle with puberty a lot and you might need a professional to talk with.
      Another option is to test the waters by telling her how the students talk about gay and trans people and how sad it makes you for them being so mean to other people. Overall your health and safety go first. What that means for you specifically I cannot tell you. I am sorry, I wished I could carry that burden for you. All I can tell you, is that from everybody I heard on that topic: if you stay strong, it will get better, you will grow up, be able to make friends, that will accept you, will be able to move to a place were you can explore your own true self.
      For now: would it be safe to go the "tomboy" route? Meaning dressing boyish, wearing your hair in a cut typically used by boys and maybe having a nick name that is not gendered? With that you can slowly test the waters, see how it feels, without outing yourself just yet.
      If you feel like you need medical care though, you have to take the risk and talk to your mom. Do not, by any means experiment with selfmedication, that shit can fuck you up for live, not because of "regrets' but because hormones influences so many important systems that miscalculating the dose is really dangerouse.

    This was much needed. I forget often how good I felt on T despite all the crap falling apart at that point in my life. I had to stop because of a sexual assault. The person who hurt me did so knowing I was dealing with concussion/TBI and chose to take advantage being a security guard at the place I would go to get my T shots, just a community health clinic. Well, he basically imparted a lot of transphobic expression into his SA. It was one of those “corrective” tones of SA like he was doing this out of wanting to help me. I don’t need to say how I feel about all that besides saying that i still find myself awake at night sometimes about it and also that I have been considering going back on T. But it’s been about a decade since then. I’m mad how many people out there I know feel the exact same way as this guy that raped me, and they hold those ideas with the same air of concern that was behind his choice to do a violence against me. Slowly I peel off the things he left me to deal with but collections of someone just going through these sort of “warnings” and addressing the underlying illegitimacy of them and showing transphobia for what it really is. It’s control, not concern. Thanks man

    A de-transitioner saying that they felt bad after attempting transition is wrong to try to generalize that experience. Most reports from transitioners speak of gender EUPHORIA from the joy they have obtained from the transition process.

    I am a transmasc Guy. I have had alot of issues regarding my gender identity.
    If it wasn’t for men like you and some support group on DeviantArt, I’d never underrstood what was special about myself.
    I am 31 now and my greatest wish is to grow a beard as beautiful as you. Also, your Voice.
    I am a PreT man WHOs always hatad my boobs and broad hips.
    I can barely wait until I can see myself in the mirror and see a man as attraktive as youm Jamie.

      Jamie looks happier as a man. Changing his outward gender expression to masculine looked like it really improved his confidence. It really worked well for him.

      I definitely feel that way with Abigail Thorn in the old episodes of Philosophy tube. I watch them and think, "Oh look, it's Abigail wearing a fake goatee!"

    Many of these points to do with how transpeople are perceived are like saying,
    "Warning! If you drive a car you may encounter homicidally drunk drivers and squid-armored bikers too high on caffine to close thier trottles," as though your choice of transport is the cause of these external risks.

      STOP being a handmaiden! They don't care about you! Some of them really hate you. Advocate for yourself, no one else.

    Jamie, I just bought your book on Audible. I can't wait to listen to it. I drive for Lyft and it's easier for me to listen to books. Also, I love your videos. I'm a trans girl and have a few trans men friends. Keep up the good work!
