  • Two Scottish waltzes, Kate Martin's by Blair Douglas and Margaret's Waltz by Pat Shuldham Shaw. Played here on mandolin with guitar and bass backing tracks.
The pictures are of the Falkirk Wheel, taken by me on a visit last weekend on a day of rare sunshine! The wheel is the world's only rotating boat lift and links the Union and the Forth and Clyde Canals; it was opened in 2002 by the late Queen Elizabeth.

Many thanks, Liz. A nice set for us to add to the Courtyard Players repertoire, perhaps?

John, that was both uplifting and educational! The only problem you've created for yourself is that I'm now requesting, for next time, a film of how the lift works, with a soundtrack of Scottish mandolin music!

Many thanks, Dennis. The lift was not in use last Saturday morning - possibly winter weekend timetable and I believe it takes about five minutes to raise a boat.
As for Scottish mandolin music, I am not aware of music written specially for mandolin here in Scotland, but we have such a wealth of great fiddle and pipe music that mandolin players are spoiled for choice. Certainly Blair Douglas is a Scottish composer, and Pat Shuldham-Shaw's Margaret's Waltz has been given Scottish identity by the number of times it is played up here, even though it was composed for Margaret Grant on her retirement as representative in Devon of the English Folk Dance and Song Society! 😄

Amazing boat lift and architecture - which accompanies your two excellent waltzes, John. ⛵

pleasant music to go with space-age technology design (Falkirk seems to be the place for that kind of thing - The Kelpies are also there)

Bertram, thanks for your kind comments. I gave the Kelpies a miss that day - a sunny Saturday can be quite overcrowded at the site.
