Your right about the Indian sites near town sites. Here in southeast Missouri, most of the town sites and old farms that were built before 1900 were built on Indian sites. Good to see you back on the river again. That was a sweet Amos. That hematite is really cool. I’ve only found one piece of that in all my years of hunting.

Between that and work and the weather, it’s been hard to find time to get out. You’ve been killing it on the marbles. Hopefully the river cooperated with you and you can find some more points.

More to come! I found a celt a little bit ago. But it is hard for me to sift. My shoulder is all sore still. I can a little. But I will hae to go to the dump some and sit down and rake and take it easy till I get back to normal.
I should be good in 3 or 4 days. I will go sift a long time then

I found a few more artifacts yesterday. But now it is freezing cold and the water went back up to high to look that new spot. So I am going to the dump around noon. Try for marbles

Thanks 👍 It stinking rained the other day....and where I found all that stuff....today has at least a foot of water on it. That is a "Low Water Site". I am hoping it goes back down. I found a few more things before the river went back up.

You made some great find down on the river---the points are cool, but my favorite was the smooth, banded slate (as you called it). I love stones and have spent a life time poking around in creeks and so forth. lol @ the pets---they make me laugh...but yep, lot of work, just like having kids.

I found my first fire making rock (with circular dish) just earlier this year! So cool! And I've found it easier to see some artifacts at night with a flashlight in the creek
Rock on! I find them everywhere from time to time. They are all over the hill tops here above the rivers too.

I do the same thing on stuff...my mind wonders. Lots of thoughts on the true use of artifacts. Not always obvious. To get good artifacts in agricultural fields constantly..you gotta dig. At least a foot deep. As usual I'm having a cup of coffee and chilln. Been super busy dude. Not a lot of spare time ✌️😎 good luck and health to you 🐿️
As far as Indian sites being near towns I live in clay center kansas, the river is close buy and I found the point half of an arrow head in my backyard
The stone at 4:00 is probably an anvil stone for bipolar percussion. Used to open up those small river cobbles.
If you mean the pitted stone. It could also be to prime the tip of a big antler billet too. I dont know what to think on some of them. Some are "Different"....instead of polished out....are "Pecked" out. Some are made of extremely soft sandstone.......others that are a "little Different" are made of hardstone.
I think personally.....the sand stone examples had a different "use" than the hardstone examples.
But what exactly they were used for I am on the fence. I think some were used as anvils.....some other uses.
@@rockscousteau Agree,, the hard stone are the likely anvil stone, the sandstone the shaping or polishing stone as they would not hold up to anvil use anywhere near as well. The one at 4:00 was a pitted hard stone that would be ideal for cracking pebbles open.

You never take broken bottles and cut them and make candle holders or shot glass
Indian sites all up down Ohio River.
On about every beach on the river. Most of them are hard to spot. That place I found these points....you would never suspect there is anything there. And it is loaded.
That small sharpened stone might be a shaver.
I am not sure exactly what you mean because this is an old upload. But you are probably right. I think stuff is that too

Do you do better on more rocky sites on the river or sifting in sandier sites?
It just depends man. This place I was on in this video is probably the best site I have seen in terms of what is there. But it is hard to find the stuff because of all that rock dumped over the bank. It all comes down to where the best points are. You may end up looking in the most improbable place ever.

Can't knock the pretty marbles, bottles and toys Rocks, but the awesome Amos's, that's hard to beat, not counting the hematite's, abrader stones and the other stones that without a doubt had a purpose when the Native was creating. The slate piece may have just been for the 'eye' on each side. Just hard to put yourself into their 'shoes' or footwear we'll say and know why . Same difference with all the nut stones, what were they used for? I understand a reason for a hand sized smoothed stone with a pit in each side having been probably used as a hammerstone, but the ones that are covered up in pits? You been really killing it, but I want you to look at some stones on the video that were close to where you were really getting excited, with good cause and see if you think their worth looking into when you go back.
At :30, just to the right of the center of the screen is a triangle or teardrop shape, might be 4 in. on it's long side on top, what looks like a curved bit is to the left, and the long side that's on the bottom of the stone has a slight dip in the middle. Here in this part of the world, I would have at least looked at it because it has classic celt shape. Has no grooves, they were inserted into hole in a stick, either natural maybe from a knothole, or created sitting at a fire with a lot of smaller sticks burning and taking each after the one before it pushing it's red hot end into what will be the handle. You can do this one after another and it really doesn't take long to put a hole through it, the rock will basically wedge itself into a handle, easily made. Chances for that rock to be what it looks like it could be, probably 25%
The other stone I want you to look at looks very much like a bead. It's in the same picture at :30 in the lower right corner of the screen. The rock is about the size of a big shooter and the hole is dead center about a quarter of an inch hole. I know you have quite a bit of natural holes in stones there, but something makes it look bead like to me. You never find a stone around my parts with a natural hole like that isn't a bead. Chances I give that rock being a bead 50%.
I've recently gotten to stopping the video and looking where someone like you finds something good, I 'll look everywhere around it I can, because I know how much a person can miss when their excited!
That picture at :30, had it been myself that found that point, after it's stored away, I take my rake and just barely rake the top, say maybe 5 or 6 feet all around where it was found and then with my bucket, I'll throw several buckets of water, especially where you have that much gravel and enough slope to run the water off fairly fast.
Sorry this took so long Rocks, but you're one of my top favorites and you have a reverence for Native American material. Happy digging!

I still have it. I just like to row the boat.If I go out looking for arrowheads...every trip it is rowing 10 miles.
Because I did that....and did not sit in a Motorized boat....I look like Conan The Barbarian.
