@@Michael019x Well that was exactly the point! Demon’s Souls shouldn’t make you feel heroic. It is made to make you feel weak, then badass for overcoming huge challenges and then back to shit. It’s also less an epic adventure and instead more horror.
Edit: without spoiling, there is an entire boss made to make you question your actions... And you don’t even fight it! It also has one of the saddest theme of the game. And the remake made it into an epic orchestral fight theme. You can guess it’s kind of... losing the point
Ps, I am not trying to tell you you can’t like the newest soundtrack. I am just saying that it just doesn’t fit the original.

They added organ to Maiden Astraea's theme and took the organ out of False King Allant's theme, somehow fucking up two of the most iconic tracks in the whole game in completely opposite ways.

"Certainly Bloodborne has informed this project"
I never saw that before now, lmao, Bluepoint are such hacks, imagine if a company was remaking Mario Sunshine and in a music trailer a dev said that "certainly Wind Waker HD has informed this project" for the music, even then that's a stretch, it'd be more like saying "sonic adventure 2 informed this project" in music if Nintendo owned Sonic.

Bluepoint made the Dragon God look like a goofy cartoon from World of Warcraft or Darksiders. The animation tries to emulate the shivers of the original but ultimately fails. Anyone new to the series will see the remake and be impressed, until you play both side by side. Gone is the slow deliberateness to the Dragon God's movement. In the original the creature moves with heavy deliberateness, with dead eyes, conveying an ancient intelligence blackened by rage for an eternity. There's sense of a supreme violence to the roar animation. In the remake though, instead he rises up and smashes some of the castle, saying "I am the cataclysm". Goofy, ostentatious interpretation of the original masked by advanced tech. Bluepoint appear oblivious the emotional and psychological details that were most deliberate in the original.

  • @opsec5400

Really enjoy your commentary on this remake. As a composer myself I find the changes not just in soundtrack but in sound design to be extremely egregious. The constant huffing and puffing in human form is nothing short of annoying, and the new sound effects for attacks and blocks almost feel like they work in tandem with the new animations to make combat in the game lack the satisfactory weight that every Miyazaki game has had from the start.
And that’s to say nothing of the soundtrack. While the original Demon’s Souls was far from well recorded (for the record I’m 90% sure it was entirely acoustic, just with a rather poor recording quality. A lot of old recordings have a similar plasticky sound to their brass, and it’s very likely that the DeS OST was just made on a low budget) it utilized chamber ensembles and slightly uncanny chord progressions in a very interesting way. The music, while obviously not fully atonal, often uses chromaticism and key modulation in an off-kilter and unexpected manner that reinforces the rather disturbing atmosphere of the game. Take for example the beginning of the oft mocked Adjudicator theme. We have an extremely low drone in D punctuated with bassy timpani hits, contrasted by the eerie sounding string section, further contrasted by the slightly bizarre main melody in the midrange. It’s using heavy juxtaposition to introduce discomfort in the player. The Old Hero theme’s main melody revolves around a diminished 5th which is one of the most dissonant tones that 12 tone music can produce. Of course, these are just examples I’ve picked to illustrate my point, but it’s clear that Shunsuke Kida was not aiming to write particularly cinematic or bombastic neo-romantic music when he wrote the DeS soundtrack.
Enter the remake soundtrack. The Flamelurker theme is nothing short of laughable. It’s so overly grandiose that it sounds like a parody of Slave Knight Gael, Amygdala and O Fortuna from Orff’s Carmina Burana all at the same time. The original almost exclusively used brass around the tenor region and constant timpani hits along with more dissonance in melodywriting (the main theme is largely in D natural minor, which is contrasted with the more sinister sounding D harmonic minor in the strings) to combine a subtle sense of grandiosity with slight eeriness. On the other hand, the remake’s soundtrack goes balls to the wall with the deafening choir and string section turned to 11. The new chord progressions and constant punctuated cymbal crashes make it sound like a satire of the Twin Princes or Darkeater Midir’s themes, or just Yuka Kitamura’s heavily neoromantic influenced style of writing music in general.
Calling it painfully tasteless, and ironically enough soulless, feels like a general understatement. Not only that, but the general tone of the theme completely fails to match the game’s own tone. A fight like the aforementioned DS3 and Bloodborne fights are far larger in scale and spectacle. Teleportation, shooting laser beams all over the place, midair acrobatics, Flamelurker has none of these things. It’s an extremely conservative fight with its most visually impressive effect being bloom and explosions. This creates a severe disconnect between what the player sees and hears. You expect an epic, breathtaking fight and instead you get... bootleg fire Manus throwing small explosions at you and getting stuck on terrain. Of course, that isn’t to say that Flamelurker is a bad boss; in fact the exact opposite is true. But it creates very strong negative synergy between what the player would expect from previous fights with similarly explosive scorewriting and what the player is actually getting.
This whole remake feels like a tone deaf reinterpretation of the original. Regardless of individual opinions on each game, FromSoft’s games generally have an aesthetic cohesiveness to them between soundtrack, assetwork, encounter design and atmosphere. The subdued, realistic colors, Roman architecture and downplayed chamber music of Demon’s Souls gave way to the gothic architecture, fantastic visuals and much more orchestral and bombastic Dark Souls, which in turn was cranked to 11 in Dark Souls 3. Now we have strange disparate elements from all 3 fused together in a rather haphazard and malformed manner in this remake. It’s a shame really. Demon’s Souls is a game that would have greatly benefited from a remaster, but that will never happen now that the Remake will effectively supplant the original as the “definitive” version of the game. And most people will never understand why that’s detrimental to Miyazaki’s original vision.

Why did they make the miners look like generic orc looking bad guys, the originals made them look like pathetic husks of former peasants mindlessly mining kinda like there clinging on the only thing they remember doing when they were human, there apathetic nature towards the player character not even noticing him or for the most part only becoming aggressive when you intervened with there work also added to that sentiment. I am with you on everything, except for your suggestion to change gameplay (like the armored spider boss gameplay that you brought up).
I do wonder, does the creative director at Bluepoint who is in charge of making creative decisions on Bluepoint remake projects actually _PLAY_ the original game before they even start working each project?? For them to miss the mark so colossally on tone/atmosphere/mood/ambience, the only thing I can think of is that they seriously never even played 10 minutes of the damn game, much less all of it like they should have!
Just the fact alone that the dimwit orchestrator said that they used a _DIFFERENT GAME_ (Bloodborne! Lmfao!) as their influence of what to design for Demon’s Souls’ musical score is _JAW-DROPPING._
So, just because two different games were made by the same developer, that means that their music/soundtrack/score should have the same scale or even remotely sound the same?!?! Like, _WUT???_ Does that guy have anything between his ears??! And the other guy had the stones to say that the “soul“ of the original soundtrack is still there? Buhahaha!
_WHY_ was _ANY_ of the music or audio/voices/sound effects reworked and changed so much?!?! *THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH ANY OF IT IN THE ORIGINAL - IT WAS ALL 100% PERFECT AS IT WAS!*
This game shouldn’t have been touched; the original was a goddamn perfected magnum opus, regardless of it not having as many pixels as games are capable of having these days (a whole whopping decade later). What a total disaster and insult to Miyazaki, From Software, and us fans. Woe on to whoever’s idea it was to do this just to make an extra coupla bucks.
This is the equivalent of taking the Mona Lisa painting down off the Louvre museum wall where it’s currently hanging, adding eyebrows on her and making her frown, hanging the painting back up, and then when the horrified onlookers gasp and yell out in anger, respond with “What’s the big deal? Women don’t pluck their eyebrows in this day and age, and Mona’s been smirking for over 500 years - it’s time for a mood change!”

Great video, though I'm surprised you didn't bring up the Maneater's new design. It reminds me of a part of the Dark Souls Design Works book where Miyazaki discusses his distaste for grotesque designs. Simply put, the new Maneater, with it's gore and scars, is absolutely something he would've rejected. Additionally, it's facial expression is less like a tormented soul forced to play the role of a vile demon and more like some irritated monster. The same should apply to the Man Centipede enemy since it's faces are the same as the Maneater, but considering how unfathomably negligent the Bluepoint devs are, I doubt that detail was preserved.

One would think that Miyazaki would have to sign off on any creative decision changes to a project that he painstakingly worked on for years to make just the way he envisioned things in his imagination. There’s not a chance in hell that he likes all the changes Bluepoint made to the original masterpiece.
      1) How is that legal? I understand he doesn’t own the rights to the game, but at some point, courts would have to recognize that BP is destroying a unique creation/IP, ruining an aspect of the creators’ legacy! There is going to be a generation of gamers now that will have only played the crappy Bluepoint remake of Demon’s Souls, and will think that actually represents how Miyazaki/From Software designed the game! Ugh.
Do you think Sony/the publisher just gave Miyazaki a ton of extra money to stay quiet on the subject matter and silently accept what was done to his baby (the slaughter of it)??
      2) If they didn’t pay Miyazaki bribe money to keep his opinion of Bluepoint’s hideous work to himself, what other reason would there be for Miyazaki to stay quiet about the topic? Why isn’t he telling the gaming media that Bluepoint sucks and needs to be stopped from ruining any other cherished games?

If they brought over the original and the new one then I don’t think new players would buy the remake because the port would have to be cheaper right? Veteran players would probably just buy the port too because of the familiarity and because of all the issues people have with remake in art design and such. Having both major consumers each pick one product over the two is not very good for business. Maybe they could have had the port be playable from the remake. Kind of like in Spider-Man Miles Morales where they included the original Spider-Man game for an extra 20.

I don't really care about Demon's Souls. But everything you just said is the way I feel about DS3. This drastic change from DS1 brutal medieval aesthetics to Bloodborne themed toy castles does not sit with me well. It's like From Software made Bloodborne and then decided that this art style is so good that every other game of theirs should replicate it. I can imagine the same thought process behind this remake. It doesn't matter what devs originally wanted to put in the game. We now have trendy bloodbornish style and it is a new standard in art style of all souls-like games.

  • @DumahTheSeeker

    Also, about the music th-cam.com/video/foayUS5xlSg/w-d-xo.html
These people have no idea what they're talking about. They say stuff like "we wanted to preserve the original" and other stuff, but they're obviously lying. They are musicians, they can't be that tonally deaf. Absolutely nothing of the atmosphere of the original soundtrack remained, only general motifs. But why? Well, as one of them puts "bloodborne has informed this project..." Now it makes sense. He, of course, right after that claims that this score still has an identity and sound of it's own, but that is a big and fat lie. This new soundtrack will fit any newer souls game like a glove, and that's the problem.
So many things that gave DeS it's identity was reworked by BluePoint to make it closer to Dark Souls and Bloodborne, and people eat this crap. They even praise the animations, even though they're clearly inferior to the original.
Even character looks heroic, for some reason. Look at the pose he does. Evey game before this one gave characters a neutral pose, why change it? Look at the box art, and you'll have the answer - screenshot bait. Heroic Knight standing in front of unimaginable odds. Now it all comes together - grandiose architecture, lack of darkness, loud bloodborne music. This game will not be dark fantasy that the original used to be.

So far my only major gripe is the music. I think the music is good when taken on its own, but as a part of the game I feel they've made it too bombastic. I have other minor complaints such as the lighting in some areas, the panting, and parries not making the sound it does in the original. Though at this point I'm used to remakes taking a different approach to things; that's just how remakes are in general. On the other hand if I wanted the exact same game I'd just go back and play my copies of the game on PS3. I'm going to wait for the game to actually come out so I can see more of it before forming any solid opinions on it as a whole, rather than praise it or disregard it prematurely.

Man, this remake is such a désastre that it made me relise something. It reminds me that each time I got my hands on shadow of the colossus, I would finish it to the end each time. Except... blue point remake of it. And it made me thinking... why?
From the start I was a little bit disappointed in their art direction but it was miner and wouldn’t have such a big impact on my experience. But now I remember... it was the gameplay! No really, even if it was close to the same controls, it didn’t had the same “feel” to it. It felt more awkward than the untrained malnourish Wanderer from the first game. It also made exploration inconvenient as before, you could look at a cliff or a mountain and see what was grab-able. But now with there high finissions and details they added, they made it in such a way that you couldn’t make the difference and only luck would determined if you could grab that rock cliff or the other identical one. The game also crashes... a LOT. Like this game was the first and ONLY one to crash on my ps4. This is all why I never finished the remake!
With all that in mind... the gameplay is not even safe in there hands. There’s now NOTHING from demon’s souls remake that would be worth paying for it. Even if they add the last archstone, I don’t trust them for making a good job with it.

Remakes are a tough nut to crack. You're always going to have community and individual grievances- its meant to be a different experience. And this is; it's also a cult-classic with an exponentially increasing player-base. Its also a console exclusive and next-gen-console-launch-title, making this so heavily divisive by nature.
I lived in Demons souls, did not turn my ps3 off for months. And then It was one to always go back to. This was a different experience entirely, and my criticisms are present. But this still is quite-something. Also, take into account how much *more* quite-something this had to be. This project had to be visually-remarkable as a launch title, which also puts this particular remake in such a corner.
It's clear there is no lack of anything in this game- it very clearly loses by the requirement of just having and being "more".

Whilst ds3 has mostly all orchestral tracks, and a lot of them share that in common, i found most of them to be unique to each other despite this. I mean i know its a personal thing but its easy to discern darkeater midirs theme from say pontiffs, and the dancer's and the abyss watchers, and lorian and lothrics, and stormdrake and nameless king and aldrich's. -Boletaria 1 looks really washed out, I was surprised. The overall low contrast level aesthetic definitely applies here.
-The player may be able to omniroll while locked on, but enemies are still running the same AI routines, meaning Flamelurker and the Skeletons in 4-1 move around like knights on a chessboard. It's all 90 degree turns.
-I thought that what they showed of the Valley of Defilement was actually pretty on point! The draw distance should be scaled back as you lose that sense of scale and horror, but otherwise I think it's the best looking out of any areas shown so far.

I've seen many fans who've been around since the original DeS show praise for the remake, and I've seen a fair amount of criticism for the game in various sites with people just as bitter as you are, hurling insults to anyone excited for what you call a "demake". The shitflinging goes both ways and all you're doing is making things worse. And before you claim I'm one of the hype zoomers I've owned both the US and JP copies of DeS PS3 for years and I'm simply waiting for the game to release before forming opinions on it and seeing if its worth getting.

I'm happy we got a remake for demon souls. It's for sure going to be a great action rpg game. But i think bluepoint have missed so much cool opportunities : no breathing sounds when in soul form, flamelurker melting troughout the fight, seems like we still have frame 0 backstabs (will make pvp unplayable), and ultra realistic lighting to shape the atmosphere better. Also why tf did they kept bosses ai and movesets, it was arguably one of the weakest aspects of the original demon souls, flamelurker still has a terrible pathfinding (he will probably still get stuck sometimes), they could have added so much cool moves, like a grab from the iron spider. It's sad.

If Sony were to officially offer both with continued online functionality, especially on PC without having to resort to emulation, that would be ideal for everyone, I think. The only way I’m not going to get disliked by you, is if I tell you the remake sucks, but it doesn’t. Yes it use teal/orange coloring and unrealistic coloring, and it redesigned the music. But the redesigned music is amazing and fits the fights better if you actually compare them fully(except for fool’s idol, frick that ost), and was what makes you think that demons souls is a realistic game that needs realistic lighting? It’s a game about demons taking over the world by sucking out people’s souls for god’s sake! That lighting makes the game feel more alive, not the world. Also BluePoint isn’t inclined to DO anything. So here’s the logic with this guy. He says they changed the atmosphere and that’s bad. Well they actually just took their own art direction, which does change the atmosphere a little bit, but who the fuck cares. You’re not going to catch the eye of random people with demons souls original atmosphere. And the original person who designed the original music for demons souls, said the remade music was better. This guy hates on them for not changing the AI, but hates on them for making the game more modern? What? The most faithful thing they could have done was keep the original gameplay and pace of the original, and you guys are wanting it and to be a completely different game if you wanted them to change enemy attack patterns and AI. BluePoint changed the art direction tho and that’s it, and they shouldn’t be hated on that as long as they tried to fix any mistakes like flamelurker’s face or the tower knight lighting. Also if you look in the original, the tower knight does have heroic lighting in the cutscene.
Also why do you care. We wanted to play demons souls on next gen consoles and we got that, but with better graphics and redesigned. You should be happy, and if you’re not, there is nothing stopping you from buying a $60 ps3 and playing demons souls on that.
This guy’s first video criticizing the remakes art decision wasn’t biased and wasn’t negative, but apparently he expected BluePoint to look at his video, and change EVERYTHING they have been working on for the past 2 years. A perfect example of response of how to cast aside a critique without actually responding to it. It's very frustrating when people try and shut down any criticism by making these kinds of straw-man arguments. I don't struggle at all to notice that his eyes are no longer bloodshot red and piercing, that his features are noticeably less sharp and gaunt, and that his overall expression is more neutral then intense or evil. There are plenty of examples in video games, as well as in film, that I find the "new one" or remake superior - even in cases when I experienced the original at a young age wherein I would supposedly be most vulnerable to rose-tinted nostalgia. Resident Evil 2 and it's remake is one example. I played the original at 8 years old and loved it, yet I like the remake even more.
Also, in case you didn't notice, the two videos represent over 30 minutes of what I perceive as artistic downgrades going from the original Demon's Souls to it's remake, and I could easily go on for at least another 30 after having played through it - I hardly struggled to find content to talk about. The environments are definitely technologically impressive, but as I've said before, lack the realistic lighting temperatures and specific stylistic choices of the original, as well as missing the mark on nearly every single NPC and piece of music.
If you or anyone else prefer the remake, cool, that's fine. I'm not out to make anyone feel bad for liking it or preferring the changes. Preferences are subjective, but the objective differences are not, and that was the point of these videos.

@@HydefHyde i did reply though. I'm just happy verbose, self infatuated people like you don't actually make games instead of being arm chair ad analysers

@@dotdotdot1000 You didn't say why you think the design is fine or not a downgrade. You just resorted to dismissing my point without actually addressing it, and seem to be incapable of doing so without resorting to insults. I do work in the industry, by the way. But unless you're interested in actually having a constructive conversation instead of childish name-calling, then we can agree to disagree.
