Drew talking about joy is an example of why he is chaotic good. Listening to these pencasts is fun, in part, because of the joy that Drew and Brian and Adrianne display.
Loved that part, want to share it with everyone. We’re lucky people who are capable of joy and enthusiasm, maybe that’s the one universal thing about FP users?
Adrienne is such a wonderful person! I like this episode a lot and Brian was not missing. BUT - what about a future episode with all three? That would be fantastatic.
It was great to meet Adrianne! Now I know why the customer service department is so nice and polite and professional. Sometimes I wish I didn’t live so far away, and I wasn’t so darn old. Goulet Pen company has got to be the best place to work. Who knew, that fountain pens could be such a blessing? That’s guys have a fun week and 4th. And Drew, remember stay calm with your dog, they feel your energy.
Delighted to see Adrienne join the Pencast today. I love that there’s still great rapport between she and Drew, but a very different vibe from the one he shares with Brian. Adrienne, I swear sometimes it’s like hearing my inner monologue come to life. Your attitude towards free offerings and your spouse’s response mirrors my life perfectly.
It was a pleasure to meet Adrianne, she is a true delight. Just listening to her made me wish I lived in Virginia so I could work at Goulet. I also enjoyed hearing Drew talk about sharing his enthusiasms with others. He really is a dear, sweet soul.
for years, i've definitely felt that if I ever had to move from my current place (Hawaii), i would LOVE to move to near Goulet so that I could work there....seems like the best wholesome company!
Hey Drew! I am a surgeon, and wanted to chime in on the "whip stitch." Different surgical specialties are different, of course, but I will tell you that the only use for the whip stitch that I encountered during my seven years of training or in practice, is in post-mortem situations. Best not think on it too much. ;) There are other more elegant techniques that we use day-to-day. Love you guys!! Keep up the good work!
That is some great insight! Haha thanks so much for dropping that in here. I can always count on the amazingly diverse community to be able to offer striking insight into every topic! - Drew
Great job filling in for Brian Adrianne. Makes me want to invent an imaginary issue with an order just for an opportunity to talk to her! Drew - you touched my heart talking about feeling your joy. Thank you for being you!
This quote might resonate with Drew about joy. “Never be ashamed of loving the strange things that make your weird little heart happy.” ~Elizabeth Gilbert Adrianne, I can almost guarantee you that the Fruit By The Foot challenge started at a table full of lunchbox kids in an elementary school when their teacher was absent and they had a sub.😊
Adrienne did a great job! She gives the best customer service. I really appreciate all the service that I have received from your company. Turkey hammock lives despite Brian’s absence!
Great Pencast!! Excellent job. Thank you Adrienne for filling in. The camaraderie between you two is lovely. I really wish I worked for such a great company.
I adored having Adrianne on this week’s episode! Regarding the “calm” descriptor she was shocked to get from the retreat, while incredibly enthusiastic, at least from this episode I think that she may have been described that way because she speaks in a soft and nice way! As far as affordable grail pens, I must agree that the Justus 95 is an underdog!! As a Justus who just got a Justus 95, it has stayed inked for months now as it just feels so nice in my hand and while writing. Thanks for sharing some joy!
This was a fun episode! I love the chemistry between Drew and Adrienne. Can we please see more of this duo when Brian needs some time off? For inks, I'd go either with Diamine or Sailor. Diamine has an impressive library. Their inks are really reasonably priced. And their interaction with the reddit community is also a lot of fun. I voted for this year's inks (first time ever Diamine created two inks!), but I haven't bought either. Sailor is pricier, but with their standard line, plus the Manyo and the ink studio lines you have quite a few options as well. For my final pen, it would have to be a Yukari Royale Nightline Moonlight or one of their maki-e pens or possibly the 2020 LE Pelikan M1000 maki-e kingfisher. I actually gasped when I saw photos of it when it was launched. It's stunningly beautiful. But it might be a tad too big/heavy to write with comfortably and too juicy, although the wetness can be adjusted. I felt Drew so much for saying, okay I was social at the party, but it's draining and I needed to tap out.
Thank you for a fantastic pencast. So great that you had Adrienne step in so we could find out a little more about her. Great effort. Great pencast! Yay!
Drew, when you showed your new yeti last week i wasn't aware they came in that color and i fell in love with that green! i had to get one for myself So this week i am drinking my coffee from my Kermit-green mug, when i click on the new pencast and see yours sitting in the foreground. Seeing that we are now travel mug twins, i couldn't help but smile.
Yo Adrianne, you did it! Well done. I just took delivery of my Goulet Pen Company order today and was trying out the dip pen along with you! Love it! ✒🤟
A lovely pencast! I enjoyed it so much. You two were just great. ❤ Adrianne's "You just have one life" resonated strongly with me! Fun fact, my friend can still hum while holding his nose. He says he feels the air escapes through his eyes when doing it, so he doesn't have problems with it. "We focus on the things we dislike or condemn" - so true, Drew! It seems easier for people to gather around the negative things than the joyous ones sometimes, but fortunately the world also has people like you, who love just sharing joy and accepting all the different kinds and reasons of happiness. Thanks a lot to everyone at Goulet Pens for just being there!❤❤
A house packed with people who want to play board games sounds like a fantastic beginning to a birthday week. You guys are so much fun to watch/listen to (I did half n' half).
The ThunderShirt worked really well for our shih tzu mix. Her reaction to thunder/fireworks was the same as your new pup - not barking, just a lot of shaking (sometimes panting).
Honestly, Drew is my dream BFF. The other contenders for that spot: John Waters, Paul Reubens, and Eddie Izzard. Anyone that can speak to embracing the things that make you happy like this is a dang treasure.
Yes Drew! Joy is so infectious and why don't we infect someone today? Drew showing enthusiasm for something is one of the best things about these pencasts that I always look forward to after rough working days. I still remember how Drew got excited about the Sailor "Christmas Pudding" pen and he shared that he even liked it more than the Sailor "Nuts" pen that he was setting money aside for. It was so fun to watch as I like both of those pens! I already had purchased the Nuts one then I ended up buying the Christmas Pudding one (thanks to Drew =))) Whenever I look at my Christmas Pudding pen, I see Drew singing and praising the pen lol, making me love the pen even more!!
Great video, team. When discussing your graph of why there is a smaller difference as you get more expensive pens, this is the “Law of diminishing returns”. You nailed in your discussion.
After a few months of discovering what I like and what not in this new and wonderful hobby (work bonus and tax refund well spent), I discovered how I resonate with the Goulet team. Drew: Pen recommendations I take to heart (hands down!), Mr. Goulet: quantity is quality, and not to be scared of getting my hands inky. BUT NOW, I need Adrianne to do a monthly ink recommendation section (please, and thank you!)🥴
Loved this pencast. Adrienne was a delight. Have her back again, please. It was great seeing and hearing a different perspective. Maybe if it is possible have other members of the Goulet team host a pencast also. Just asking but I am not sure if others want to be on camera. LOL! Brian you were missed. Thanks again!
Same method here for bubble and squeak (cabbage and mashed potato). Small amount of oil / butter, (not too much otherwise it goes soggy), and just leave it alone on the heat for 5 minutes. Then repeat for the other side. Lovely and crispy on the outside😋😋
Yes! I LOVE Drew talking about wearing your passions and making that human connection. I work at a dry cleaner so it's something people associate with almost a "chore". I try to pick people who look like they're in a funk or look like they're caught up in the monotony of the day to day and make a joke or comment on something to make that connection. I told an older woman I loved her hair (it was purple) and she just LIT UP. Or someone will comment on my pen (I use my black and pink kakuno) and then it's on. You never know who needs that human connection.
Lol! I watched this to find out about the amazing dip pen you were going to discuss and when I finally got to that part it was the Kakamori nib, which I already own (in brass because supposedly it’s more flexible)! 🤦🏻♀️ I’m so glad I watched anyway, because it was all really interesting and Adrienne’s explanation of the quirks of Red makes me want to research it more! You are right that the Kakimori nib is great for swatching! It’s also good for highlighting… and it’s just a very cool nib. One of those designs that make me wonder why nobody thought of that before? Lol. Your estimate of the price of the holder sent me racing to your site because I didn’t buy either of the holders that Kakimori offers because they are just ridiculously expensive (especially the wood or bamboo one!!). Unfortunately, yours is not under $12 or $15 - it’s $33 (which is still on the low side for them 😳). I use my nib with a Tachikawa Model 36 Comic Nib holder with the “pink” (it’s a very red pink 😉) grip that is squishy, but not too squishy and very comfortable for long sessions with whatever nib you put in it. I’ve held and looked at the Takimori holder and frankly I don’t see much difference other than the Takimori is longer (for no practical reason I can think of) and doesn’t have a grip. But the plastic within plastic with a plastic center thing is basically the same as the Tachikawa holders (I have older holders that have little metal parts to hold the nib and I much prefer the plastic!). As I write this, the Tachikawa is $7.09 on Amazon. They also make a holder with a blue grip and a cap, but I was afraid the cap wouldn’t fit - it would be interesting to see. Right now you guys are out of the Kakimori nib. I hope that you get the brass one in at some point and are able to review them side by size. Kakimori also makes a glass nib, which is another innovation I’m amazed no one thought of before! It’s just the end of a glass nib attached to a thingy that lets you put it into a pen holder. Much less likely to break then a whole long pen make of glass!! No dip nib that I’ve ever encountered can hold as much ink as the metal Kakimori nib - it just keeps writing and writing (that is, if you are writing thinner lines - the super wide lines go through ink much faster). It’s an expensive pen nib, but its innovative design and ability to hold lots of ink per dip AND lay down super-wide as well as extremely thin lines make it worth it!! Thanks for the video!! ❤️
Drew: you knew this comment was coming... Adrianne was a complete joy to have on today's Pencast! And she almost had it correct when describing wave-lengths of light (i.e. color). The point she missed was the wave-length of red is about half the wave-length of blue, so on a relative basis, the range of colors we consider red is not different than the range of colors we consider blue. A sports analogy might be the length of an American football field vs. the length of a tennis court. The net on a tennis court and the 50 yard line on a football field are exactly half the distance between the base-lines/goal lines, but the absolute distance is very different. It works much the same with the electromagnetic spectrum (which includes visible light); half-way between red and yellow is a bigger absolute number of nanometers (a billionth of a meter) than half way between green and blue, yet both teal (i.e blue-green) and orange (i.e. red-yellow) are half way between their respective primary colors. ... and Diamine is my favorite brand of ink (they seem to bleed and feather less than other brands; important to me since I often have to write on cheap copy paper at work).
I'm with Adrianne: Visconti Il Magnifico "the green one" 💚 I just looked online & they're on sale! 🤭 I have a brass Kakimori. I used it to draw something each day as I opened my Diamine 2022 Inkvent Calendar ("the green one" 😅💚) And though I loved playing with all those beautiful Diamine inks, if I had to choose one brand, it would be De Atramentis for the document inks. As others have said, as an artist, I need waterproof fountain pen inks. And as I commented earlier, I recently mixed Green Grey with Yellow, 2:1, and created a lovely waterproof warm green that doesn't look like pickle juice! 💚Fun pencast, as always. Enjoy your time off!
Yay! Nice to see Adrianne after talking with her on the phone on several occasions over the years. Well done Adrianne great dive into the spectrum and wavelengths. An astronomy educator for several years prior to retirement, I’m not sure that I ever “noticed” that the red band was a lot wider than the blue. Thank you. That the color of paint, dyes, ink colors are not pure light, but the result of the paint absorbing most of the colors of the spectrum while letting us perceive the color not absorbed as it is reflected back to our eyes, and everyone perceives somewhat differently. Amazing that we can agree at all on good and not so good colors. Great Cast, both of you, hope your 4th of July stuff and celebrations were good. And thanks for skipping a week, It gave me a week to catch up and to remember to comment for once. Hope Adrianne gets to fill-in again sometime.
As a new (UK based) worshipper at the church of Fountain Pens I LOVE The Goulet Pencast. I am only just getting to know Brian and Drew and then you drop Adrianne into the mix. I neednt have worried though, she's ace!! Thanks for adding another level to the hobby I've been looking for all my life. Viva nibs 'n' ink!!
Adrianna’s response to hearing Drew watched Andor is pretty much my response (arm shakes and all) anytime I find out that someone likes something that I do. Side note - Andor is a phenomenal Star Wars storytelling. Thank you for sharing your joy with us.
I''ve been working at a different office for months and I'm just catching up to pen casts. I was super excited to see you guys did a review of the Kakimori dip pen. Mine just came in and holy cow what a cool tool. I got a steel nib from you guys and I may need a brass when they're back in stock. Super, super cool. Thanks for reviewing them, that was the tipping scale for me purchasing one.
Drew, I really resonated with what you said about your energy draining after socializing at the pool party. I had a similar experience this week and it was the first time I’ve ever noticed my energy like that. I’m an introvert, and at work my boss challenged me to do a presentation by video call to 50 or so people. I was so nervous about it, I had sweaty palms and a dry mouth, and I felt my voice shaking during the presentation. And after the presentation, my energy drained. My energy was at 20% and it was really hard because I had another 3 more hours of work left. This year I’m learning more about myself and am aware that if something like this happens, I need to recharge at home and have no social activity for the rest of the day.
It was so nice to meet Adrienne! I wasn't sure I would like the pencast without Brian, but she was great! I am so looking forward to the live from D.C. pencast!
This was super fun episode! Adrianne has such an awesome voice! She should be narrating audio books! We all miss Brian but now we know the pencast is in good hands whenever he needs time off. Thanks for the fun, light-hearted conversation :) Cheers from Italy/Portugal/Brazil! (OMG, I sound like Drew with all these excited exclamation marks hahahahaha)
I have been out and about and missed this gem with Adrienne .. and now I am soo happy I got back to it .. :) btw: I have always wondered why all of my red inks are so finicky .. and now I know! Thank you so much!
Drew's question "would you sacrifice all other ink variety to choose one brand so that you could have this one ink color?" Absolutely yes! I love the deep blue of Private Reserve DC Electric Blue. Nothing else like it! I would choose Private Reserve just so i could have that ink color. Love the banter and keep up the good job.
Great Pencast (as always!). As to using only one ink brand-this is an easy one for me! It would definitely be J/Jacques Herbin. The colour and flow of their regular inks are the very best IMHO, and their shimmer inks have a perfect level of subtle shimmer, not in-your-face, but enhancing the colour of each ink.
Thanks, Adrienne! I really enjoyed getting to know you a little bit, and I also enjoyed this week's pencast. Drew -‐ it's ok to be a chaosmonster of joviality 😂
Instantly tried humming while holding my nose😂😂😂 Brian I missed you, but I feel like Adrienne and I are very similar humans! Board Games, artists(mixed media/memory, keeping) very easily excitable and making happy noises. Excepting all the free things.Thank you for the guest spotlight and not canceling the pencast❤
@Drew - My mom grew up on a farm just outside of Austin, MN - the birthplace of canned Corned Beef Hash! She taught me how to cook it as a young girl- you have to use a good pan, one that stuff doesn't usually stick to. Get it hot, like searingly hot, and--this is where you have to be quick--start dropping it into the sizzling pan, give it a good toss around, like a stir fry, and spread it in a layer across the pan. Then go for the next scoop. Do this until it's all in the pan and browning, then turn the heat down to medium heat and cook it until it's got that nice crust. The key is to let it sizzle, but you have to watch it so that it doesn't burn. (Use a flat spatula to "flip it" like a burger patty.)
Lovely to get to know Adrienne a bit - we'd love to see her back in future! My preferred ink brand would be Sailor, I think. I was going to say Diamine for the same reasons as Drew, but Sailor has a solid range of colours between their Ink Studio and Shikiori ranges, and they're doing interesting experimental stuff with the Manyo and Yurameku ranges.
An alternative to Diamine is Sailor, they actually make many more inks than you carry. They aren't as inexpensive as Diamine, though. Actually, people have 2 lives, work and home, I saw this on a TV show called Severance. I should watch it again. And again. and.....
Adrienne was absolutely right about the length of the red part of a spectrum. Red light waves are also MUCH longer than blue ones which is why there is more red in a proper spectrum. She was also correct about the cones in the eyes. Our cones read red with far more difficulty than any other colour because of how our cones perceive those longer red light waves. Another cool point is that SOME people are actually able to perceive more shades within the spectrum because they have one extra cone. Most humans have three light cones but there are some who have 4 and are called a Tetrachromat. The ability to see more colours due to an extra cone is called Tetrachromacy. I happen to be a tetrachromat and I do tend to see more shades within the spectrum than some other people who I've spoken about this with. That said, the hardest colour for me to differentiate shades in is red. Even with an extra cone in my eyes, The slower, longer light waves are a challenge.
Drew..."primarily" might be the word you were looking for. I also relate to being exhausted after dealing with crowds of people. I did some management training that was based on the MBTI a few years ago and tested as the second-most introverted person in the cohort. I explained that introverted does not equal shy, participated actively and presented on behalf of my group, received feedback from everyone that they didn't think I was an introvert (they weren't listening about the shy thing I guess)...and then went home and slept for 14 hours.
I thought I was going to miss Brian this week. But. Drew & Adrianne you are such a joy. I was having a rough morning; but you brought my spirits up. When you discussed displaying your passions it reminded me of when we began wearing face masks. I was quickly tired of boring plain masks. So I went online. I found (& purchased) a mask that has characters from my favorite tv show when I was quite young. It has The Banana Splits on it! Most people look at me a bit weird. (Nothing new to me.) But every now and then someone breaks out in a big smile and says, "I loved them when I was a kid!" I also found, and wear, a long sleeve t-shirt of them. Now, I just need to find Pufnstuf or Casper. I have a t-shirt that has the owl, boy and the question, "How many licks..." For me it has always been just like the owl... three. "I kinda want the tongue wheel." I nearly spit out my coffee. You two are great together. Who is this Brian you mentioned?
The Edison Garolite pen was a pleasant surprise to me, just like the Visconti Mythos was! I’m so glad I grabbed one! The feel of the pen body is so unique! It feels and almost looks like highly polished wood! Love it.
They do have inks that change color when exposed to UV. There was a company I think it was Del Sol, when you go out in the sun the clothing item will get colorful and then when you get out of the Sun the color disappears
I've been reading up on color changing properties (my husband did try inventing a thermocholromatic airbrush paint once.) I am no chemical expert, but from what I understand, it's that the color changing inks and paints are pigment-based, and the molecules are quite large. So in essence, they are just too big to pass through a fountain pen well.
This was nice to have Adrianne join Drew with Pencast. Brian is missed but as a newbie to pen community it is nice to see that there are others that are willing to help produce the show. For Drew, we have a Breville Toaster Oven and my brother cooks the canned hash on a baking sheet. So the oven has convection but it may work with an Air Fryer also just make sure you watch it so it does not dry out too much…hope the suggestion works for you! Happy 4th everyone!
I do flick my pens when cleaning them. However, I wrap a papertowel around the nib but I leave a space, kinda like a pocket, and then I flick away. Catches all the remaining ink without the splatter.
Heat-sensitive film for temperature readings are alive and well for brewing kombucha: it's a black strip about 8" long that has temperatures between 60 and 100, and the sweet spot of the lower 80s in a bracketed window. They can be stuck on the outside of gallon glass jars you use for the first fermentation. The numbers seem to be different colors for different temperatures, but the colors themselves don't change.
I have to say, Adrienne did an excellent job of hosting the show, even mentioning the name of the ink you were using in the Spotlight, knowing that people were going to ask!
About the corned beef hash. The trick is to get as much of the moisture out before it goes in the pan. To do this, begin by heating a pan over medium heat. Don't forget to turn on the vent above your stove. While the pan is heating drain the beef in a colander or mesh strainer. Transfer to a plate with a layer of paper towels on top. Use another paper towel to gently pat the hash as dry as possible. Turn the heat on your pan to medium high and add some vegetable oil to coat the bottom of the pan. Carefully place the hash into the pan and DO NOT STIR IT. Let this cook for a few minutes until you see the crust start to form around the edges. When the hash is ready it will release from the pan with a gentle touch from a spoon. Flip what you can and repeat to get a crust on the other sides of the pieces. This will take some practice to perfect. Don't get discouraged you can do it, I belive in you.
Really enjoying the Pencast! I have been watching the latest episodes for the past few weeks, and also working my way through from the beginning, up to episode 32 so far. Had to witness for myself the origins of the inside jokes! I found my way to fountain pens by way of art when I decided to learn to draw and paint a few years ago. I still do artwork, but I found I like fountain pens so much that I now use them for writing too whenever I can, basically any time I can choose what paper to use. No surprise, then, that if I were limited to one ink brand, it would be DeAtramentis for their Document Ink series. They work so beautifully for sketching and in combination with watercolor, and I also find them great to write with. Their color range is beautiful, too. I would miss Platinum Carbon Black, and also the Sketch Ink line from Rohrer and Klingner, but DeAtramentis would give me plenty to work with for both art and writing. I mostly use TWSBI pens, and Document Inks work great with them. I have the brass version of the Kakimori dip pen nib, and I love it, especially for drawing. As for ‘grail pens,’ I think of them as coming in two levels: one, ‘maybe someday it’s possible if I plan and save,’ and two, ‘not in this lifetime unless I win the lottery.’ 😊 Thanks for all the fun! Nice to meet Adrianne!
Great show, Adrianne did a great Brian, interchangeable hosts!! Now we need a 3 hander. See y'all in 2 weeks. Happy 4th, it's my mums 85th birthday that day too.
For ink swatching/sampling with one dip pen with lots of line widths, you gotta try the Sailor Hocoro with a fude nib. It's not as badass as the Kakimori, but it is also great for fine line and broad paintbrush ink dumping with one dip, and at a much less intimidating price.
Re: one ink brand, it used to be Colorverse with no argument. Now, however, I’d go with Birmingham. They won my heart with the Twinkle Sprinkle additive, and even before that their shimmers just outshine Colorverse’s for me.
Went and looked those up because I’d never seen them. Gorgeous! Someone should have an Ultimate Shimmer-Off, LOL. Colorverse vs Diamine vs Herbin 1670 vs Birmingham vs Wearingeul. Diamine Inkvent colors have also had more shimmer than Colorverse in my experience.
Lovely to see Adrianne as co-host! And I’m right with her on the green marble Il Magnifico pen. As always, there is no-one like Drew for a blast-from-the-80s-past random reference : YES, that thermometer strip that looked like it was made out of camera film, with the temperature appearing (supposedly) after a minute but that NEVER worked.
Drew, I can totally relate to feeling drained after socializing in big groups. I've found that small groups are not an issue at all, and can sometimes boost my energy, BUT larger groups are different and exhaust me. I thought I was an introvert, but I've found that I'm more of an extroverted personality with a high sensitivity level to groups of more than 3 or 4 people.
I agree about correcting test papers with red ink. I had a PA that increased the number of errors she made when she saw red ink. I used the red in be abuse it was easy to see. I tried different things. In the end, a peaceful Caribean sea blue worked best. It was easy to see, and it pleased everyone.
At 1:27:01 4,400 people stopped to pinch their noses and hum.😂 Can we have Adrienne show us her pen collection?? I feel like she did once before, but it's been a couple of years. Thank you for having the pencast today! It was a difficult workweek, and it brightened my day.
The Lamy 2000 was my grail pen, but I purchased it before finding my pen style. Ordered a medium and while it writes great, it just wasn’t a good fit for my needs. Have since gotten on in an EF and love it. So my advice is to make sure your grail pen suits your writing style and uses before plunking down the $$$s.
Welcome, Adrienne! Drew, I 100% get you with the socializing crash. And I like Adrienne's metaphor for it, though I would say it's almost like a magic bar if your only real battle strength is magic. When it's drained, you're done, and you're pretty much a useless rock that people have to work around until it replenishes some. You can artificially boost it up (coffee, sugar, booze, magic potion), but it's only a temporary solution. And it'll replenish on its own if you give it time. Also, I think the word you were looking for was that you generally watch shows that Shannon is primarily interested in. ^.^
Adrianne, good to see you on the pencast with Drew. Maybe you should join Drew with some of his non pencast product intros and a welcome sub for Brian. I have the Kakimori nib in brass, I bought before you carried them. I purchased it for ink sampling after breaking my glass dip pen. I didn't buy the holder because they are over $30.00. I was tired of using cotton swabs for sampling inks and replacing another glass dip pens just didn't seem to make sense. It Kakimori was a really good purchase and an excellent sampling tool and no more wasted cotton swabs. My first grail pen was the Pilot Vanishing point. I was just fascinated by the idea of a click fountain pen. Then came the E95S in burgandy, which always has Diamine Writers Blood in it. Then came the Pineider Forged carbon fiber with that wonderful quill nib. The forged carbon fiber just called to me. But grail pens from here may never happen, since I just can't justify pens over a thousand dollars. I liked the discussion about your seminar especially about plans. You need them but they need to be flexible. When plans seem to be taken as written in stone, they can become a roadblock. The one brand ink choice was a really good question. Choosing one would be difficult, but it would be Diamine or Robert Oster. Not only do they both have a wide variety of beautiful colors but they are well behaved and well priced. When I look at the inks I have in my collection, those 2 brands are the most prominant. I have some from the other top brands, but what gets inked up most are those 2 brands. Welcome Adrianne and like the humming fact, Could only get a short sound and no more. Turkey Hammock enjoyed it as usual.
Me! thats me... De Atramentis guy here! daily driver (Ti Ultra kind of ubscure pen of bigidesign) always has Document black. have other colors for fun in other pens sometimes, but even my backup Fpen ( Kaweco BRASS sport) has document brown. i had diamine black when i started out with fountain pens. walked form my job to my car and was devistaded to see my notes and sketches melting before me.... never again! also love the fact that i can use document black for a drawing and color it in with alcohol markers or something like that.
Okay, I won'T say Brian is expendable, but Adrianne is always welcome if one of the dynamic duo needs to step away for a week. I second the earlier request for all three fo you sometime. But don't please make it a three hour show then. i started using fountain pens in the early - mid 1960s in elementary school. Sheafer pens were the only ones available to me, and I loved the peacock blue ink. I started falling down the rabbit hole in 1973 or so, with some Osmiroid calligraphy pens. I still have those, and I have a drawer full of dip pen holders and nibs, including a hand-turned wood holder. Now I almost exclusively use Preppy and Safari pens. Most of my writing is at work, and I don't want to risk losing something expensive. The best red was Hunt's calligraphy ink in Red. It was discontinued about 20 years ago, and there,s nothing like it, except MAYBE that Diamine Poppy ink you show in this video. I have to confess, though, that my current favourite red is Private Reserve's Vampire Red. I expected it to be a stunning crimson, or brilliant scarlet... But nope. It's the colour of dried blood, and it's so PERFECT that I laughed when I saw it! For what else would a vampire leave behind? :)
Love you guys, Always fun to listen to the pencast. Took me a while to warm up to Drew (no offense buddy !) but now, I think he's the star of the show ! The title of the video "Affordable Grail Pens" made me think about this. I have Lamy's and TWSBI's, all bought from Goulet Pens (the lollipop is a nice touch in the packaging!), but anything "higher end" from the Top 3 Japanese brands, I always order direct from Japan. One of my "grail pens" was a Sailor ProGear KoP. Getting it from Japan made it WAY more affordable than buying it US (like over $300 less, affordable). I'm figuring that they're not selling these at a loss, so that makes the mark-up they impose for the US market, astronomical. I'm all for supporting US retailers, but when I can order a KoP AND a Pilot Custom 845 for not much more $$ than just the KoP from a US retailer, that's a bargain tough to resist. Thoughts on why there's such a mismatch in prices US vs Japan?
@ Drew Brown. I am a surgeon and dabble at sowing fabric. While technically putting a human back together is sewing we call it it suturing. The real difference is in what is being put together, the thread and the instruments. I will say that sewing fabric is harder for me than suturing humans. 😅 Love you the podcast, love your enthusiasm, missed Brian but enjoyed Adrienne.
AS A PHYSICS DEGREE STUDENT I REALLY ENJOY ADRIANNE EXPLANATION
Deep dives are my favorite part of any pencast. I'll take more "adrianne explains science" any day!
That totally caught me off guard! Haha in a good way! - Drew
@@itsmeLori Maybe it is. It's so good to see people capable of joy and willing to share it!
Adrienne is such a wonderful person! I like this episode a lot and Brian was not missing. BUT - what about a future episode with all three? That would be fantastatic.
It's a little cramped to have three people at the same time, but Adrianne will definitely be back! - Drew
Thanks so much for the kind words! - Drew
for years, i've definitely felt that if I ever had to move from my current place (Hawaii), i would LOVE to move to near Goulet so that I could work there....seems like the best wholesome company!
- Drew
I’m with Adrianne. Free is always good!!! 🤩
Happy Fourth to all the Goulet peeps! 🎉
Great job filling in for Brian Adrianne. Makes me want to invent an imaginary issue with an order just for an opportunity to talk to her! Drew - you touched my heart talking about feeling your joy. Thank you for being you!
Same to you, Debbie! Thanks for joining us! - Drew
This quote might resonate with Drew about joy.
“Never be ashamed of loving the strange things that make your weird little heart happy.”
~Elizabeth Gilbert
Adrianne, I can almost guarantee you that the Fruit By The Foot challenge started at a table full of lunchbox kids in an elementary school when their teacher was absent and they had a sub.😊
Adrienne did a great job! She gives the best customer service. I really appreciate all the service that I have received from your company. Turkey hammock lives despite Brian’s absence!
This pen cast was awesome! So nice so to a new face, too. Also loved Drew’s deep dive on doing things that bring joy into the world. Touched my heart
I appreciate having a guest host instead of canceling. Happy fourth, everyone!
Great Pencast!! Excellent job. Thank you Adrienne for filling in. The camaraderie between you two is lovely. I really wish I worked for such a great company.
We get along really well! - Drew
Would love to see more of the goulet team like before on write now ! It was great seeing everyone’s pens and ink/paper preferences
Adrianne has such a lovely voice!
Thanks for the wonderful episode! I always love relaxing to the latest instalment of the Pencast!
Thank you for a fantastic pencast. So great that you had Adrienne step in so we could find out a little more about her. Great effort. Great pencast! Yay!
I love the joy y’all bring to my world!🤗🥰 Adrianne was a perfect addition to your very awesome Goulet Pencast! Hummm..very interesting🤭
I want one too!
Yay! - Drew
Yo Adrianne, you did it! Well done. I just took delivery of my Goulet Pen Company order today and was trying out the dip pen along with you! Love it! ✒🤟
Adrienne, you are delightful. Also, I appreciate the D&D alignment analysis of Drew!
Thanks a lot to everyone at Goulet Pens for just being there!❤❤
Thanks for the kind words! - Drew
Yay, my feedback was chosen for the first time! 😆 Thanks!
Honestly, Drew is my dream BFF. The other contenders for that spot: John Waters, Paul Reubens, and Eddie Izzard. Anyone that can speak to embracing the things that make you happy like this is a dang treasure.
I totally agree, I’d love to be BFFs with Drew
Wow! I'd say I'm in pretty good company! - Drew
I realized right after filming this that I should've mentioned the Nuts as a my hypothetical "last" pen! - Drew
Great video, team. When discussing your graph of why there is a smaller difference as you get more expensive pens, this is the “Law of diminishing returns”. You nailed in your discussion.
This is the nicest company I know. Thank you Adrianne and Drew for another amazing pencast!
Penultimate start of the weekend!
Cast iron skillet, medium high heat, evenly spread out the corned beef hash, and let it crisp up untouched for about 3-5 mins
Excellent! Thank you! - Drew
Same method here for bubble and squeak (cabbage and mashed potato). Small amount of oil / butter, (not too much otherwise it goes soggy), and just leave it alone on the heat for 5 minutes. Then repeat for the other side. Lovely and crispy on the outside😋😋
Yes, Cast Iron is very good for the hash- but you need to be comfortable using cast iron.
OMG Amanda! Yes! Keeping being your wonderful self! - Drew
great pencast by Drew and Adrienne! Hope we can see her more in the future pencasts
Nice to meet Adrienne, whom I know from Goulet Nation, when she occasionally pokes her head in.
Fascinating as always, Dan! Thank you! - Drew
It really is a phenomenal show! - Drew
Team Matador! Drew., you would like Coloverse Mars Curiosity too. Soooooo many brown undertones. and Welcome Adrianne!
I totally get that! I sure you did an awesome job, though! - Drew
Loved hearing from Adrienne! Delightful episode as usual
It was so nice to meet Adrienne! I wasn't sure I would like the pencast without Brian, but she was great! I am so looking forward to the live from D.C. pencast!
Adrianne did a fantastic job!
I have to agree with others about Adrianne's lovely voice. She's a wonderful addition to the Pencast!
Thank you for doing a pen cast. Nice to meet Adrian! You two are so funny. This was fun. Blessings
It was great to see Adrienne again, it's been too long since she's been in a Goulet video!
btw: I have always wondered why all of my red inks are so finicky .. and now I know!
Instantly tried humming while holding my nose😂😂😂
Brian I missed you, but I feel like Adrienne and I are very similar humans! Board Games, artists(mixed media/memory, keeping) very easily excitable and making happy noises. Excepting all the free things.Thank you for the guest spotlight and not canceling the pencast❤
Adrianne rocks.
Great ep, y'all. Im very curious what Adrianne's favorite type of board game is and also what games she's been enjoying most lately
I'm with Adrianne, i love Diamine Poppy, it's really, properly red! Beautiful colour.
And again. and.....
Adrianne is awesome! I want her in more episodes in the future
Thank you for saying that! We're a solid team at work, so it's good to hear that translates to the show! - Drew
If I could only pick one brand it would be Colorverse! I like the bottles, inks, colors, boxes, themes, all of it. And great job Adrianne!
Loved the mention of Diamine Poppy Red. It's one of my favorites as well.
I've been reading up on color changing properties (my husband did try inventing a thermocholromatic airbrush paint once.)
I am no chemical expert, but from what I understand, it's that the color changing inks and paints are pigment-based, and the molecules are quite large. So in essence, they are just too big to pass through a fountain pen well.
Hi Adrienne! Perfect thing to watch while I wait for a Pilot Custom Heritage 92 to arrive today . 😁
Adrienne is a natural. Fun show. Love the Diamine Marine Ink.
Thank you! She really is a delight! - Drew
As for ‘grail pens,’ I think of them as coming in two levels: one, ‘maybe someday it’s possible if I plan and save,’ and two, ‘not in this lifetime unless I win the lottery.’ 😊
Thanks for all the fun!
That makes sense! - Drew
I agree about correcting test papers with red ink. I had a PA that increased the number of errors she made when she saw red ink. I used the red in be abuse it was easy to see. I tried different things. In the end, a peaceful Caribean sea blue worked best. It was easy to see, and it pleased everyone.
At 1:27:01 4,400 people stopped to pinch their noses and hum.😂
Can we have Adrienne show us her pen collection?? I feel like she did once before, but it's been a couple of years.
Thank you for having the pencast today! It was a difficult workweek, and it brightened my day.
1:16:20 - 1:16:37 AMEN!
I also had one from last year! That's what encouraged me to reach out to them! - Drew
Drew gave Adrianne the Brian tangent face!
I had to. - Drew
Me!
That's ok! I'm still can't tolerate myself! :) - Drew
@@Gouletpens hahah, well, I love you now, man !! Not in a weird way.
If love some Hypercolor ink! I had and orange/yellow Hypercolor t-shirt in 1991. I loved it! I kind of miss it.
@ Drew Brown. I am a surgeon and dabble at sowing fabric. While technically putting a human back together is sewing we call it it suturing. The real difference is in what is being put together, the thread and the instruments. I will say that sewing fabric is harder for me than suturing humans. 😅
Love you the podcast, love your enthusiasm, missed Brian but enjoyed Adrienne.
Nice dip pen, I have been avoiding dip pens because I thought they are all fragile glass. Though I missed Brian, Adrianne is fun!
