  • Hi guys. On this episode I'll be making shrimp super food!! Spirulina is one of the oldest life forms on Earth. In fact, this blue-green microalgae is partly responsible for producing the oxygen in the planet's atmosphere that billions of years ago allowed the planet's originating life forms to develop. Spirulina is the world's first superfood, and one of the most nutrient-rich foods on Earth.

    Big hint: Trader Joe's Super Green goodness powder is chock full of human consumption grade spirulina and chlorella algae and other found leaves from nature good for shrimp and fish. Can use any of mark's tasty recipes with super lollies etc. thanks for the inspiration Mark!!!

    Excellent video! I greatly appreciate all your hard work.
    No fuss, no frills, just all your knowledge straight to us viewers.
    I stopped watching another less experienced brit a long time ago when he accidently killed all his fish in one of his tanks. I don't want to learn that and it actually made me sad.
    The viewers on YT are all in different stages of aquatic madness and I believe you attract us who's had aquarium forever and look for development in the hobby as well as ways of doing that little extra for the inhabitants.
    Please stay active, we love your dedication and passion for the hobby!!
    Best regards from the forests of Sweden!

    Brilliant little video, roughly what ratio of water to spirulina would you use? I've only got 4 shrimp at the moment and just a 30gram bag of spirulina just to try out with them, so don't want to start off with more water than I have enough powder to make the paste. Also, do you think this would work with egg white instead of water like you used to get the powdered nettle to stick on to the shrimp trees in one of your other vids?

    Hi Mark, is this spirulina stick good for fishes also in a planted tank? And another question, have you put nettle leaf in the shrimp tank after drying or straight in after plucking it, why I am asking is because nettle leaf stings us human, wont they also sting the shrimps too?

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. spirulina is a good all round food. After blanching or boiling nettles the formic acid is destroyed so will not sting.👍😀

    Well I've told you before I am definitely a shrimp novice I'm just curious how do you have so many different varieties in one tank and they don't breed each other in two different types and colors? Or are these just all one sex? Or is that what people do if you mix a yellow with a black and white did they come out next or one or the other?

    What’s that thing called in your tank the bowl thing with the glass tube with air in and are they essential for a shrimp tank as I’m new to this I have everything thing else. By the way great video I nearly bought some of these then I saw you make them and I already have some sprinula powder thank you

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's called an oxydator. You don't need them they just add extra oxygen to the aquarium. You fill them with hydrogen peroxide 6% food grade.

  • @TKTrooper
    @TKTrooper 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Once dried out, how do you store these? I'm asuming all the ones you made don't go in a tank at one. Do they also go in the fridge, plastic food bag or tub?

  • @AquaticHaus

    Another brilliant video mark.
    May I ask if i could bake them in the oven to speed up the harden/dry up process ? if yes, how long should i bake them.
    I tried to make the pad type of foods with the idea from your previous idea but even though i let it dry off by itself for 3-4 days , it's still soft and not solid and not being able to sink .. any idea why ?

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No i just let them air dry. As for the sheet food if you put it in between some kitchen towel and microwave that will speed things up, but keep checking as they get hot very quickly . 👍😀

    • @AquaticHaus
      @AquaticHaus 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mark but do you know it floats ? Is it because too much of water or it's just not dry enough ?

    Hello Mark, thanks for the video. I just bought Zazzee Organic, natural and non-GMO Spirulina to make these; just found out that in a tablespoon it contains 427 micro-grams of copper. Will this be detrimental to my shrimp?

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it's fine there's copper in most things in minute quantities. Most fresh greens like spinach contain copper but just trace elements.

  • @deannesherriff3247
    @deannesherriff3247 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Mark, just a query, when you set up the trickle filter tank, you put a precycled sponge and media in it. How long was it before you could put the shrimp in? I’ve done similar with another tank, and the ammonia and nitrites are 0, nitrates 0.25. It’s been set up for a week and has plants and lots of snails in it. There’s a big trickle filter (it’s an Aqua one 850) in it that was not used, so I’ve got that running, and a really big sponge filter with a chamber under the power head full of ceramic noodles, which has been running for some years, although we had to turn it off to move the tank. It was off for several hours, but left in tank water. I’m going to put dwarf puffers and Khuli Loaches in it, not shrimp.

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I waited two weeks before it settled down. If your putting fish in you should be fine, just add them slow and keep tests and regular water changes going. 👍😀

    Mark, what do you use to make the nettle leaves sink? When I put leaves (or cucumber) in my fish tanks I usually use a strip of lead, a spoon or one of those screwcumber things... but they are all metallic so I can't use them with the shrimps.
