  • Remy makes their first proper appearance on the channel, and they're here to tell you about a racing game by Konami that no one seems to remember. But is it worth getting enthusiastic about, or should it be subject to unnecessary euthanasia? (Don't demonetize me for putting that word in the description, TH-cam, please, they're just really bad puns ok)

Enthusia holds a very unique position in the sim-racing genre; it’s not so cliché as to be frumpy and childish, but also not so sim as to be “wannabe racecar driver” the way Gran Turismo is. Enthusia sits in a grey zone that can only really be referred to as a “gentleman’s drivers game”. As such, it provides the player with a clear and concise message to improve in order to succeed, but to also appreciate driving (and not just the cars themselves) for the challenge that it is and can be.
Accurate tire scrub, a proper clutch, weight transfer, brake transfer, and proper understeer and oversteer characteristics all combine to create a game, that when playing on a Logitech GT Force wheel, holds up *EXTREMELY* well today as a sim - possibly only rivalled by the best sims that STILL do not take weight transfer and tire feel into the equation the way Enthusia does. As someone experienced in on track driving in real life, I strongly believe that Enthusia is perhaps the best simulation racing game ever made, bar none, to date.
The fact that it’s not fun for most and comes off as ethereal for a select few only solidifies this fact. It simply was not designed or engineered to cater to the average “car guy”. It is out and out, 100%, a professional driving enthusiasts game, which makes sense, considering its title: Enthusia Professional Racing.

      @ZX3000GT1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

You may have overestimated Enthusia quite a bit. It is better than GT4 (and GT5 as well in certain aspects), but there are things that Enthusia lacks as well, even in comparison with older GTs. No proper tuning and upgrading, no tire wear, poor controller steering (for whatever reason Enthusia seems to limit the steering while using controller. Even emulating a steering wheel using a controller makes it much better to play, while using normal controller mode it's really difficult to feint drift), harsh Enthu point system (AI could plow to my back and I'm the one who got the point penalty), and it certainly doesn't have a proper clutch (it's not analog, and you can shift with or without using the clutch).
Mind you, I love Enthusia (still play it to this day. Lowenseering is still one of the best fantasy tracks ever made in a racing game IMO), but I wouldn't call Enthusia a professional driving enthusiast game. I won't with GT as well.
Funnily enough some if the developers of Enthusia ended up on PD at the time of GT5's development. Thanks to that GT5 doesn't have the understeer issues with a lot of cars.

Hey, it's an Enthusia review! Don't see these very often.
Someone in the comments (flowermouth) mentioned that this game comes alive with a steering wheel, and I agree with virtually everything said. Switching from a standard PS2 controller to a Logitech Driving Force GT gives literally every car its own, unique handling characteristics.
When this game's played with a wheel, a Lancer Evo and Impreza STi couldn't handle any more differently, even if their specs suggest that they should drive identically. Making a '70s mid-engined Lancia Stratos dance through Burgenschlucht chicanes makes driving feel like a divine art. I can't pretend to know exactly what the 200 cars are like to drive IRL without relying on my, uhh, armchair-warrior 2nd-hand knowledge, but the game still managed to give me the impression that cars in Enthusia handled much more true-to-life than those in Gran Turismo 4. I'll just say that the Enthusia cars drive as their real-world counterparts are reputed to do. At the very least, the one truly accurate thing I can say is that with a wheel, I enjoyed Enthusia's physics much more than I did GT4's.
Actually, there's a 2nd accurate thing I can say: using the standard Playstation controller to drive RWD cars in this game feels terrifying.

That bit showcasing the music track at nerburgring, was giving me GT4 flashbacks. Racing around that track with 'A Million Miles Away' playing in the background is one of my most cherished memories with that game. I think the soothing, ambient, electronic music tracks like these really gives the ring it's character in my eyes, and really gives it this otherworldly, massive, kinda sobering feel & scope. I should track down a copy of this and play it sometime it looks good.

I played a lot Enthusia last year on an emulator binge. The game really comes alive with a steering wheel. The physics are miles better than Gran Turismo due to the tyre model being a little more accurate and the fact they made so much focus on weight transfer. It means you could actually throw a front wheel drive car sideways and mid engined cars actually felt correct, oversteering on entry under brakes and understeering a little on exit on the power. Also differentials worked correctly, you could tell if one wheel was spinning because of an open diff. Honestly if GT4 has Enthusia's physics it would be my favourite racing game of all time.
I do believe however the lead technical programmer did start working at polyphony after this game and worked on GT5 and GT6 and it shows

One of the greatest racing games ever made! Gran Turismo 4 at the time was loads of fun, and none can deny that, but if you were looking for real simulation, Konami's Enthusia was the game you'd be looking for; Loved it, it played great and looked darn good for the hardware it was running on.

Thank you for sharing the love! ^^ I'm so happy to hear that there are more loyal fans out there. This game was way ahead of its time and you can tell that they wanted to do more with it . There were indeed plans for a complete story mode involving this girl as the protagonist but the idea was scrapped late in the production because Konami wanted to rival GT4's release (which in the end proved to be the biggest mistake). As a concept it was pretty bold and the driving physics still keep up really well today. This and the soundtrack would be enough to make this game one of the greatest PS2 hits if the actual content wasn't that bland but still, over a decade on I still take some time to play the game and give it the love it deserves. Awesome video :)

Fun fact, with the VGS system enabled it actually helps you a lot to learn how to distribute the weight transfer on cars, so in a way it makes you a much better driver if you pay attention on keeping the center of gravity (that yellow circle) balanced, atleast it worked for me when I unlocked the Alpine A110 which is a car that oversteers a lot.
I made a flawless run after practicing with the car and how to manage it's weight in the corners to control the oversteer when needed, Enthusia is much more advanced than Gran Turismo in that regard and if you keep trying you'll improve your racing skills quite a lot, it feels extremelly satisfying when you finally master the more difficult cars.

Still though, it's a shame this game got pretty much overshadowed by Gran Turismo 4; I only hope that Konami can someday come back to this series... well if they'll ever stop being a bunch of cucks lmfao. Thanks for reviewing this game though, Vale! Super happy you finally covered it!

Great review, I just recently get back into this game and its just so memorable with all the tracks, cars, and quirky but fun game loop.
The comment on Konami while understandable is quite harsh. Few recent years is quite a disaster, but they do set the record straight to respect the customer more. Their entry in arcade is stronger than ever, and their nod to the classic is pretty well decided too.
Maybe not Enthusia is Konami trying to revive, but any new racing games that hits close to Enthusia is all welcomed. Konami definitely can try again in my opinion.

    • @ZX3000GT1
      @ZX3000GT1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

What do you mean their arcade entries are stronger? Most if them are literally the same game with new coat of paint.
The most unique arcade title they've recently made is probably DanceRush Stardom, and that was like 2018. Now they're focusing on subscription based PC adapted arcade titles like IIDX INFINITAS, DDR GP, and SDVX eAcloud.
Coupled with whatever shit they're doing with NFTs, and I can safely say that Konmai is becoming worse and worse, day by day.

Can you do a review of all the Ratchet and Clank games in many words? (It’s not a ERAWW video) It’s just a review of all the Ratchet and Clank games, what do you like and what you don’t like, characters, story, gameplay, and the weapons.
You can add music or no music at all and just you commentating your thoughts and opinions for all the Ratchet and Clank games. (Including the movie)
And I hope you have a Quarktatstic Day!

Fun fact. There is a series that races the Nurburgring in reverse and has existed as a sanctioned series for decades. The only reason why people think the Nurburgring wasn’t “designed” to be raced backwards is because we see it so often in a clockwise-only layout that we just assume that’s the only way to drive it. It’s like Driving in the US for 30 years and then suddenly traveling to Aus and being forced to drive on the “wrong” side of the road. It’s all about perspective

For the Nord's course, I think they approached the fact that the Circuit contains the Nurburg Castle (which exists, in case you think was made up), and gave the Castlevania Final Boss feel, along the early morning time set, for Lowenseering, remove the scenario and you probably get the same mood as Nurburgring, a medieval fantasy adeventure action/platform.*
For the Driving Revolution, is like GT's License's meets DDR due the way to read your passed gates, and your lower bar of fullfillemt/life
*(said due Konami publishes Castlevania, despite never played any game, just guiding by looks)

Would not be surprised about this though considering both Konami’s involvement and the fact that Enthusia’s composer worked on some DDR/pop’n music songs and a Castlevania game

I feel like I had this game when I was younger. My dad wasn't a big gamer but he was one of those guys that in the 90s if it was a konami, Sega, nintendo or square enix game he was going to get it for me. I guess the bigger the developer name, the cooler he thought the company was and the more likely I was to get their games 🤣😅 he's from the NES and super NES days so you can imagine how behind on games he is today. Lol but still thankful for the weird games he got me that I'd never have played otherwise. Like this weird spy game I loved for some reason but it was lower budget game I believe, I think it was called Cyberia because it was like a futuristic Siberia. I was 7 last time I played it and I'm 26 now so... memory is a little fuzzy.

It’s actually something I’ve discussed with others, we felt like my reviews needed a break inbetween segments to better seperate points (like title cards for each segment but because of how I write reviews I didn’t think that would work) and also I wanted an excuse to put more raw gameplay in videos so I killed two birds with one stone imo

    Rewlly like this video format.
Disappointed you didn't mention that freeplay mode you can customize what the A.I race with instead of randomize it. It is such an underrated feature that provides a lot of replayability that is barely used in a racing games (only other ones I can think of are V8 Supercars 1 Freestyle Mode and Asseto Corsa PC version)

    • @RemyRaccoon

I wonder what Vale thinks of Wreckfest, a demolition derby/banger racing arcade-sim racing game by the people behind the good Flatout games.
It's seriously good fun with one of the best examples of vehicle damage and chassis deformation with customisation as to how much it affects gameplay.
