  • Update June 2022: This video was made before I purchased the Open Builds Black Box. I no longer runs this controller or Mach3. This system was just too glitchy and unreliable with many problems arising after I made this video. I highly recommend the Black Box for simplicity, cost and ease of setup.
    How to configure a Huanyang VFD with a NVUM Nosvusun CNC Controller to run spindle from MACH 3 cnc software. Includes wiring and basic VFD settings.

    1. The novusun board must be setup on 24V in order to send voltage via VSO and out1. It doesn’t work if only on USB.
    2. The out1 on Mach3 must be configured to port #2 and pin #1 and Active Low. Don’t ask me why?
    3. Read carefully the Huanyang manual in order to setup the configuration to read from the board terminals. Mine is : Pd001=1, pd002=1, pd044=2, pd070=0.
    4. I wired the ground close to Out1 on novusun to DCM on Huanyang. I don’t know if it make difference but I think is more on the safe side.

    Should you get the Novus NVEM? The answer is a resounding "NO." So I
    wired it all up once I figured I had gotten defective drivers. I
    received my replacements, and all was well. The CNC was running
    perfectly. Smooth movement, got my E stop ready, and my Zeroing plate
    ran perfectly. It seemed all was well. I didn't connect my spindle to
    the NVEM (Version 2).
    I attempted to finally run a file I setup
    with fusion 360 and and it then suddenly started to do weird things
    like the emergency stop started to go off randomly. Then suddenly it
    just stopped working. The ethernet port no longer received a connection
    (lights are dead) and even one of the lights that indicates the device
    is on suddenly didn't come on anymore. There is now just 1 red light
    and nothing happens.
    I turn on the device now and it just wants to drive my motors into my stops.
    I
    have to say, this is worse than just wasting money. I wasted valuable
    time and energy into getting this piece of garbage to work. I seriously
    think the people that have one working are just lucky. This thing is
    seriously not worth the money. On to go buy my smoothieboard instead
    that has an amazing amount of information I can actually read. For
    anyone else interested, check them out here:

    Setup:
    Windows xp
    mach3
    Novusun NVUM v2 controller
    Knock off askpower VFD (i think)
    This is my 1st major cnc build, and i am at the final hurdle - controlling the spindle via mach3 and a vfd. The novusun control board (which has caused endless confusion) is a usb parallel port emulator. Where I am currently, is the vfd reads frequency when the Spindle cw control is pressed on mach3, however, the spindle won't come to life regardless of which pin outs i put it on. The spindle works fine with the VFD in manual mode which rules out some problems, I am just very confused about the relationship between mach3 and the novusun NVUM and how this controls the spindle. Anyone got any experience with this kind of setup?
    they change the software of NVUM,. maybe because of FREQUENCY Problem, i think,..

  • @LogicSpeaks
    @LogicSpeaks 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bob, which manual did you follow to set this thing up? I stupidly bought the ethernet Version 2 card from Lollette and I just can't get this thing to move a motor. Following their manual is near impossible since the translation is total garbage.
    Did you have to change any settings on windows before you got Mach3 to run? I was able to install the plugins for NVEM/NVUM and they're active in Mach3. Went through all the Ports/Pins setup following the images on their manuals but nothing works. They also mentioned in the manual that the "status" section should say something like NVEUM "loaded" but I don't see anything in that dialogue box. Its just blank.
    I know you have limited time for TH-cam comments but if you have time to respond that would be wonderful!
    I plan on writing a setup manual if I can get this to run.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi, how did you solve the spindle speed problem?

    • @bobbildz8865
      @bobbildz8865  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ultimately I had to revert to the manual spindle control on the VFD. I was only able to turn the spindle on or off in the end with Mach 3. With the OpenBuilds BlackBox controller I've had no problems. The technology is superior, the software easy to setup and run. The logic is processed on board vs the NVUM which relies on MACH3 to do the processing and this creates missed steps and anomalies such as the spindle problem (although the spindle problem could be the fault of NVUM just not sure)

    Hi, can you help me with same type Novusun controller setting in mach3?

    • @robertz3806
      @robertz3806 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi make sure your motor outputs has spindle checked green. Also make sure in the spindle setup tab in ports and pins that the pwm selection is on. You may have to play with the PWM base frequency to get your spindle to run correctly. In motor output you may need to toggle the hi/low setting to see which activates your spindle. This is for speed control.
      For turning on the spindle your output pin1 is what activates the spindle so make sure that it is activated in ports and pins under outputs.
      Sorry but I dont have MACH3 in front of me I'm going off of memory so the names I'm using aren't exact, maybe
      Honestly, I've had problems with the spindle speed control. It seems to be the way the VFD is resetting and it's not detecting the PWM signal from MACH3 . I haven't had time to check the PWM signal output from MACH3 so not sure what the problem is. I can still turn on the spindle in MACH3 though so am ruining it with the potentiometer on the VFD for now.
      I think NVUM is turning out to be a deal where we get what we paid for. I'll update my channel as I make progress and have time. Hope this helps a bit feel free to ask more

      So your controller is powering up and the steppers run correctly? If your limit switches aren't working make sure you have Mach3 inputs on for the input ports you're using for those switches. It could be active high or low depending how you connected the cable to the switch if the switch has three tabs. I checked mine with multimeter so when pressed the switch passes current so they're active high. The controller has input ports labeled.

    So I have to say, this NVEM Novus is full of mysteries. I'm beginning to think its a huge piece of wasted money.
    So I connected all drives, everything 100% certain correctly wired. My X
    axis with a slaved motor (Dual drive) would only move one direction
    (either arrow key drives it the same direction). So I took Y and Z
    drives, and wired them to the X dual drive - the X drive would work
    perfectly (Moves both directions depending on the key pressed).
    Now, I wired an additional motor - Y - it moves only 1 direction now. Did the same thing with Z - moves only one direction.
    I have no idea what this means but if anyone has an idea please let me know.
    Otherwise, I'm just buying a smoothieboard and let this be my last mistake when buying garbage with terrible information.

      @bobbildz8865  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi sorry to hear you’re having so much trouble and yes I have to admit that at the outset I wasn’t too pleased with this controller but I stuck with it and have found that some of the settings in Mach3 were actually the problem. However I do have to say that the spindle control at this point is only working for me on and off and am no longer able to control the speed which for my particular application is acceptable. But I can see That for somebody else That probably won’t be the case. You need to make sure that the resolution in the settings for your particular drive motors are correct and you can play with those and you need to make sure that your Y motor is independent of your X axis and Your second text motor should be slaved there are videos on TH-cam on how to slave a motor. You had a lot of information there quite honestly I’m a little bit lost but I can say at this point if you have Mach III running with novasuns latest driver it’s decent for the money. Yes there a better systems out there but for 4 to 5 times the price.

      Hiya,
      Thanks for all of the suggestions. I think the conclusion I have come down to is that 2 of the 4 drivers I purchased are defective. Basically, I have tested the "working" drivers that I have which move the motor in both directions on every connection of the NVEM and they all work properly. The suspected bad drivers on the other hand don't work properly - they move only 1 direction. I have tested the good and bad ones on different motors I just had laying around, and they behaved the same way. The good ones spun the motor in either direction, and the bad ones only spun it 1 direction. Thanks for taking all of your time to attempt to help me. I appreciate it!
