      It is all in how you pack it. I have the exos 58, and about the same amount of gear, and I always have 15 liters or so to spare easy, and I accomplish this in how I pack. Sometimes I do things that seem counter-productive too, like I use a compression sack for my Marmot UL2 tent, but my 20-degree cosmic down is loose in my pack at the bottom underneath my evening/PJ layers.

    This is one of the most impressive things I’ve seen lol. I’m a beginner, and fitting everything in my new pack is tough, also mine weighs more than yours! It’s probably the bear vault, those are heavy. And excessive food. But the way you crammed it all in there motivates me to stop being so delicate with my bag and stuff it to its limits!

      The simple answer is "he doesn't". You can see that at the top of the pack is the diaphragm / iris that normally closes up over the packs content, it is stretched upwards with the head only just covering it. Clearly he needs an extra 15-20 litres of space.

    Paul ,first of all it is really good that You decided to show others what You Know and how you do it , second it`s your trip, your way of spending quality time and your way of doing things you like ,so you should be proud of it . I have never been in UK but I know the weather is not Ibiza like, so if you go spending time in the mid of nature you have 2 options, one is to take only the most necessary things and you will just cross the land or the second option is to take whatever You need to feel comfortable when you stop to admire the views for some days or read a book ,whatever ever else you like. When I got home, with all the stuff I'd gotten for family, my camera gear, and all my camping gear, my pack weighed a little over 150 pounds, where I was about 120. I wish I could fit all that into that bag, but mine has to fit a 6" gold sluice, tools and a small gold pan lol.
    Good thing about the sluice tho, leave the tent in the bag (minus the poles and pegs) and the channel from the sluice lets the tent sit in nicely, as well as the sleeping bag, then pack the other stuff around that.
    Also I have the Naturehike Cloud Up 2 the new edition one, very nice tent for the price.

    Interesting to see how other people do things! For multiuse you could use the schnozzle bag to store your sleeping bag. I compress my bag in the sack and place it in the bottom of my pack upside down (i.e. "schnozzle" facing up) and then press on it a bit more to compress it further before closing the nozzle. It helps for me as I only have a 25litre bag but it could be helpful if you plan to do multiday wild camps for an extra day or two's food space.

    • @PaulMessner
      @PaulMessner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point. I've tried this before myself buy found the schnozzle bag more difficult to remove all the air for some reason. I think its because its much lighter. Thanks for watching.

I have cut down to what I consider the essentials...paracord and tarp to build a shelter, fire-lighting and fire-starting materials, water canteen and water purification tablets, first aid kit, multi-tool with a strong 3inch knife blade, sleeping bag and an MRE. I didn't want to ditch any more of this stuff so your video really helped me :)

    You need to give a compression dry sac a try for that sleeping bag

    • @PaulMessner
      @PaulMessner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have one. It compresses small but it's more of a solid ball. I prefer to be able to manipulate the shape. It's just down to personal preference I guess. Thanks for watching

    • @geoffreyboyling615
      @geoffreyboyling615 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PaulMessner Yes, Paul's right. A compression sac will turn your s/bag into a hard ball that is actually more difficult to pack around. By putting it in a bigger sac the s/bag has room to 'flow' and move around to fit into spaces
      More importantly, severe compression can damage the down
      I used to use a compression sac, but about two years ago I treated myself to a rather expensive s/bag from PHD, and they warned me about compression sacs. In fact their bag was supplied with an ordinary stuff sac that didn't squash the bag too much; plus a larger mesh bag for storage
      I have another down bag; I carry it in a compression sac, but don't tighten the straps. Just put it in the bottom of your sac, then pack everything else on top. And of course I use a waterproof bag as well - a large plastic bag.

    • @BeatMeBloody
      @BeatMeBloody 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Btw. What sac are you using for your sleeping bag. I've been on the hunt for something like that. But all I find is very rigid almost plastic bags.
