I never put it on a scale, but it's probably around 50 to 60lbs. It's awkward, so it's a little hard to guess, but based on the amount of material I used it should be in that range.
I"ve been considering the same project except I want to use a 2x6 (or maybe even 2x8) tubing for the bumper and also weld some square tubing to the bottom edge...is some sort of "loop" shape under the bumper to prevent vehicle under ride during a rear end collision. The XJ fuel tank is in a precarious position back there during a rear end collision. In your opinion...how do you feel your XJ fuel tank would fare in a rear end collision? I think what you've done would greatly increase the safety of the vehicle..in my unprofessional and untested opinion. I think that tying the rear unibody together as much as possible helps minimize "crush in" during an accident. My goal is to also get the bumper about 6" out from the body so I can also fab in a step area atop the bumper....sort of like the older pickup step bumpers. I'll also attach a minimalist swing out tire carrier to keep the tire low and centered to help with my goals of safety. More room...and more material back there is what I'm thinking will help.
I'm confident my fuel tank wouldn't rupture in a considerable rear end incident. However, if anything is hit hard enough there is no guarantee. Adding more material back there, especially a stronger bumper, will make a big difference. You still have to be careful in that lower vehicles will simply go under the bumper and then may tear the tank or stuff it into the rear axle and rupture it. Either way, many vehicles do suffer tank failures in accidents and rarely do they catch fire because of it.
Love it! I have a factory gas tank skid that I was going to put up under my XJ, but after seeing this video I might just build my own based on this idea. I have a factory tow hitch that isn't being used anymore and seems like a good place to start. So how heavy do you think your 3/16" thick skinned gas tank skid plate is?
Thanks! I almost always use 3/64" thick for cutting, unless it's an awkward spot where you want a little more strength in the disk to resist having it break if you slip or side load it, in which case I go up to 3/32". For brand I mostly buy the Canadian Tire house brand ones when they're on sale for 60-70% off, they're a deal at that price but otherwise not really worth it as they do not have the same life as a professional grade abrasive. These work fine for what I'm doing, being just a hobbyist, but if I was an actual professional I would likely exclusively buy PFERD as they make a truly superior product. I have tried the Princess Auto ones (I assume they are the same as Harbor Freight in the US, as they sell all the same garbage) and would never ever recommend them, but YMMV. Most of the other professional brand ones I have found to be quite acceptable, and if you see any of them at a discounted price you will likely be quite happy with what you get for the money. Also, if you haven't already, get a 5" rather than a 4.5" grinder, the useful life of the disks is much greater.
I'm just wondering how much gas you're going to consume with a thousand pounds of bumper and Skid plate in the back, and a thousand five hundred in the front bumper. Needless to say is that I envy your engeneering skills, awesome quality job
It has 37" tires and 1 ton axles... I can assure you the fuel economy was bad before adding bumpers/skids. Also the stuff I built is considerably lighter and more minimalist than a lot of the super fancy laser cut aftermarket stuff.
I had some trouble recording audio, something to do with living in a tent with heavy equipment and aircraft running outside for the last month, but rest assured I'm back in the somewhat more reasonable settings and on it, you will be able to hear my sweet voice narrating my escapades shortly.

Yeah, the factory skid leaves a little to be desired, and you're already half way there, so you might as well!
