How To Easily Tank At A Low Level | WoW Classic

- Here's a very quick and basic video on how you can tank effectively in Classic WoW without putting much work into your rotation or macros!
I stream over on Twitch: / frenziiii

this was actually super helpful for me. currently learning tanking, so hearing about sword and shield vs two-handing, as well as thunderclap vs shouts was really useful.
Thanks for watching!
Same here. I only care about keeping threat so good to know about Shout and just staying in arms stance. I waited till level 18 to tank rfc as a warrior just because I don't want to be a bad tank lol
I tanked my first dungeon as a prot war yesterday. It was DM and I HATED it. Could not generate rage and could not keep threat. This video made me understand why. I will now make another try. Thank you so much!
Glad I could help!
It's funny when you first try to tank and go into RFC...
So many mobs that, the moment they are in melee range of you, chain-stun you so you cannot do anything... and then once you are able to do something (the mobs area already attacking everyone but you) you get disarmed and are just standing there trying to reflect your life's choices 🤣
I'm shocked at how you took less than 5 minutes to address and correct every single issue I've had returning to tank in fresh.
Glad I could help!
Great guide - I had a sword and board in RFC and you're right - no one was waiting - going to change to these tactics - thank you !!!!
Thanks for watching! I have an SoD one coming
Would be nice to make a tank guide series for every dungeon in the game and covering all their critical points to pay attention
I could possibly do that for Season of Discovery, especially with all the new runes. Thanks for watching!
As a new tank to WoW in general, I would love that@@frenziiii
Not sure why WoW players want the game played for them. The fun is the experience and learning.
@@uverpro3598came here because i got hard flamed by a guy in my group. Its fun to learn stuff but not fun when the 20 year veteran flames you for 40mins straight
Just read the WoWhead strategy guide for the dungeon you're about to tank. Otherwise, if you still feel uncomfortable you could run it as a DPS to get a better feel for what you should be doing.
When you put charge and the switch to def-stance in a macro, you can get the rage from charging into def-stance without tactical-mastery.
Also it's very weird to me how so many tanking-guides don't even mention taunt. Taunt has a lot of potential when used correctly and can be next to useless when used incorrectly. So a brief mention of how it works would be nice. It has 2 effects. One is to force a mob to attack you for a few seconds but the other is: It copies the threat of whoever has aggro before. So you can generate a ton of threat on a mob all at once the bigger the discrepancy was.
I'd also highly recommend using an add-on like threat-plates. You can configure it to show your aggro-percentage on a mob. This is very helpful for knowing what to taunt and also for conserving rage for the next pull. So you taunt the one where your threat is the lowest and don't waste rage on this mob before taunting since you'll bridge the discrepancy anyways.
Also discouraging the use of a shield is not something I'm a fan of. When you don't use it, you are just someone who keeps threat. Part of tanking is also to mitigate damage. It's okay when you are overleveled and on most trash. As long as the healer doesn't need mana-breaks. But especially for HC, I'd rather have more mitigation on the tank.
new player here, so if i understand it correctly, if someone else who isnt a tank is building threat, i can copy their threat with taunt ?
@@TheScrantonStrangler. Yes, exactly. And using this mechanic in your favor can make a huge difference between a good and a bad tank. Taunt can be next to useless or extremely efficient depending on how much threat someone else generated on the mob you're taunting.
@@ailst thank you man, i will be allot mindfull with taunt now
@@ailst appreciate the feedback. Your last paragraph is why this video was created. The problem is people can’t find ways to hold threat with a shield on. Sure, I’d have have more mitigation on a tank as well, but if they can’t hold threat, then casters and softer dps are getting hit.
In that regard, yes, I’m discouraging the use of a shield. Thanks for watching.
Asking a new player to both to hold threat, have mitigation, and also get used to holding/generating rage with just a 1H, shield, and DPS not giving the tank enough time is near impossible. Again, which is why this video is created.
There is no reason a player can’t be a “threat holder” like you mention all the way up to around ZF level with a 2h and gear that is mid.
1) Thunderclap does minimal AOE threat
2) Spam Battle Shout and Demoralizing Shout to generate threat (Drops off level 30)
3) Stay defensive stance. Dont swap stances till level 30
4) Tank with 2H
Wish you would explain what you're doing in the video better
Two stacks of sunder armor or one revenge is the best way to aggro. Can switch to battle stance and hamstring to kite mobs while the team finishes them and you run to the next pack. Or piercing howl. This made warrior tanking the most fun for me.
why are people hating on tanking with a staff? crescent is a big upgrade for 2h dps at that level... more damage = more threat. i appreciate all of the tank videos frenzi, im currently learning and a lot of your stuff has helped me. excited for the SoD content.
Thanks! That means a lot :)
Had a group last night not believe me at all when I said the crescent staff is great for warriors DPS and tanking. I just let the numbers show

@@ShlimmyM8 of course thanks for watching ❤️
Great guide ! Currently lvl 17 undead warrior HC SF - trying to stay safe ! It’s go time . I think another key one for me is just line of sighting packs. Casters early can be annoying so just pulling them back always helps with LoS. Cause you’re right - ain’t no dps waiting for you to get threat hahaha
Thanks for the vid! Rolling warrior for the first time in Hardcore, usually play hunter so this helps!
Glad my videos are helping! Thanks for watxhing
@@frenziiii Do you think I need to stay in defensive stance? Or can I get away with battle if I am higher level for a dungeon
I love your responses to the comments. A true pioneer and not afraid to do what is best for you, instead of being a robot who needs to be told what to do and how to do it by other robots. What a legend
Thanks for the kind words! ❤
Short, simple and sweet. Great video!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the content its all very useful to me! I tanked in ffxiv but am struggling in low level dungeons in wow sod. You've covered how to hold threat really well but why am i at the bottom of rhe dps chart? Can you do one on warrior dps, especially confused since i barely have any aoe abilities
To be honest i figured on my own that 2 handed tanking works amazing, i still swap ( with macro ) between 2 handed and 1 handed with shield for intrerupts and heavy dmg fights, but rarely. Still amazes me how many low level warriors just do it with shield and they dont understand why they cand hold agro. Every dungeon i do as a healer i tell the warrs to just tank as 2 handed in def stance spamming sunder
My son started playing Classic WoW with me on the PvP server. He just hit lvl 14 and will tank RFC today, your video will be really helpful for his first run.
Also I forgot to ask is 2 handed still better than dagger and shield I been having my son use a dagger just me thinking a faster weapon meant faster guts for more rage
@@jesusl6227 how’d the run go?!
Great vid!
The DPS should learn to play as a group instead of just blasting everything.
Let them get beat on until they learn to slow down threat. The tank leads the group, not the DPS
I see your point about not tanking with shield if you know what you are doing but I think a lot of new players will be taught wrong from the start by this honestly. It also doesnt give you a chance to mitigate damage or shield bash spells. Super interesting to hear about the shouts tho! I really had no idea they did so much threat! Tahnks!
@@wani2000 New players with a shield have no idea how to conserve rage, generate threat with a 1h-Shield. Veteran players blast mobs without them being touched, the new tank now is discouraged to tank due to a bad performance and the group ragging on him.
1h and shield is not needed. Only for certain situations.
Here is a tip for CATA TANKING. Forget what he said about thunder clap!! Put 3 points of talents into the talent that gives 100% chance for your target that has Rend applied to transfer to all enemies when you thunder clap. The tactic here: you charge an enemy, apply rend, then bring that target over to a mob and use thunder clap. Now every target has rend applied and damage over time. This will up your damage overall and keep aggro. Another tip is to TURN ON the raid health visuals. You need to see the enemies health bars. As a warrior you should be using Execute to finish off low health targets so you get a free Victory rush. This is an ability that does decent damage, heals you, and is free (cost no rage). Do this and you will be popping off damage and keeping up rage. As well as killing low hp enemies that are still damaging you even tho they are 1 shot health.
@@afcourageous7048 So you’re in a classic WoW video, talking about Cata and trying to discredit my video? Anything you said is thrown out, but you immediately hopped to the comments to try and sound right. Yikes my dude.
@ ahh gotcha!! I just happen to see the video and added my couple sense. Didn’t catch the classic because I’m a lot people are currently in CATA classic waiting on MOP classic this summer
Great stuff frenzii
If shouts are that strong, would speccing fury and reduce shout rage costs be the way to go?
@@sedaka91 The point of shouts is to gather, and start with some AoE threat. If they were that strong, everyone would just spam them and press nothing else.

What talents should you use for early-mid game dungeon tanking?
Always arms tree. That way you’re efficient solo leveling as well.

I just use macros for when I absolutely need the shield at a dire time.
/equipslot 16 “1Hweapon name”
/equipslot 17 “Shield name”
@@frenziiii ah that makes sense
@@drago7147to actually answer your question, yes there is a point and the latter portion of that instance is probably it. Ulda is the point in the leveling process where the dungeons shift from "I can steam roll this with a DPS spec healer and some common sense" to "ok time to start thinking a little bit more about specific situations." You don't need to camp the shield all the time, but you should be prepared to swap to it. Specifically on the big trog packs towards the end of the dungeon. They hit really hard. Just use your head. Tanking in classic requires situational awareness and there's no cookie cutter way to get the job done. Every group will be different. Sometimes you have a DPS specced healer and slow dps and I'll notice your healer getting stat checked. What do you do when a 5 mob pack is smacking you hard, is barely half dead and your healer is basically oom? Just analyze the situation!
Yo man you playing SoD? What realm you on and do you have a guild? Would love to run with you again.
I’m on wild growth my man. I made a small guild with my community!

"Yours sword and board is perfect babe, the two handers hurt."
@relaxandsleep6681 😂😂
what do you mean with spam battle shout ? Like for real, spam it ? Use it as much as possible ? or just once or twice each pull of mobs ?
Use both your Demo and Battle Shout once or twice, then hit your usual rotation. I mainly want you to stay away from the mistake of using thunder clap and wasting rage on nonsense abilities. Thanks for watching.
@@frenziiii alright got it. thanks alot!
So i literally habe to use a 2h? Thats disappointing 😢
i don't believe you do. carrying a shield just means x amount more mana for your healers throughout
You don't have to. The trick is to keep moving, basically keep bloodrage on cool down. Also, rage pots are amazing. The lowest one is only a Sharp Claw and Briarthorn. I usually pop one before first pull, along with blood rage, then just keep moving. If you have a bunch of casters who drink after pulls instead of right before, pull 1 mob to beat on while they drink so you don't lose your rage pool.
Coming from FFXIV as a main tank, I see some similarities but still feels like an uphill battle learning WoW's tanking D;

Makes guide for tanking and doesn't have nameplates. What it this?
If I had a dollar every time someone said this. Name plates doesn’t make a tank. I ALWAYS recommend players to use them, I don’t. If you need them for a crutch by all means go for it. Thanks for watching.
Playing without enemy nameplates is certainly a choice 😂
Tactical mastery and a 2 hander, ez tanking for leveling
tanking without a shield? poor healer...
Talk to DPS about it lol
Yeah use the shield and 1h.
Shield bash can save the day against especially any fears and heals.
And imo more important than the damage reduction, is faster attack speed and particularly for heroic strike.
The damage dps isn’t great enough for 2h to matter , except when you’re strong enough to literally just roll the place without worry.
Also you can weapon swap for cleave dumps (especially if you have sweeping strikes) and trash.
@@fistofthebrownstar6216in classic , especially early, dps should be told and learn to hold their aoe and burst for a moment.
Of course if the Tank uses the smart strategy of shouting and pulling the group to them, instead of charging and immediately losing an add to the sort of rubber band range because they start moving towards you before you finish getting to them. Especially when you thunderstomp and only tag 3 of the 4 and a heal is still enough to shift one away.
Charge does of course have more value against pulls with ranged mobs mixed in, if LOS is not readily available.
But I want to run sword and shield…
then do it
Now good guide
Yet the tanks who don’t use thunderclap never hold aggro.
@@arugula4750 must have been some bad experiences then my friend. Check threat tables, thunderclap is an awful ability outside of the attack speed reduction for end game bosses.
Tanking lvl 23 mobs with a lvl 27 warrior doesnt seem that impressive.
@@Skandalos that’s not the point of the video
Another option for some rage gen is to apply Rends to a few targets. Weave it in between shouts. It's cheap compared to heroic strike and cleave, and leaves more rage for the shouts.
I was hopign SoD was going to bring back that mechanic where TC spreads your Rend on one target like a disease to the TC targets.
Thunderclap hits 4* targets.
Did you mean 3 additional?
guy tanking with a staff still has auto attack bound, idk about this guide
Imagining knit-picking so bad, looking for any reason to be negative over a bind I don’t touch. Crescent staff at that level is BiS for 2H damage. Thanks for watching!
Binding auto attack is really important at low levels especially. Only alternative is a macro, as switching targets can cause weird things to happen. Not as big a deal when you are a dps, because you don't risk losing threat. At higher levels, you don't need it because you have plenty of other buttons to start your attack on a mob after switching. I suppose you could just spam right click on the mob and hope for the best instead, though. Also tanking with a staff makes a lot of sense. Certain staves during the leveling process have the highest weapon dps, more so than axe/swords/maces. On top of that, a two hander is typically more viable than dual wield while leveling because you wont have the +hit/+crit needed to land your hits. Really just showed you don't know much about the topic.
You look like a StarCraft marine irl gigatank
@@SuperBranFlakez thank you!
Can you charge in defensive stance? Or thunder clap in defensive stance?
You cannot charge in defensive without the warbringer rune in season of discovery. You cannot in Classic. Battle stance for Thunderclap. Thanks for watching.
Great and very informative, but even though the advice at the end is very realistic, I don't think we should have such low standards for DPS. They have a responsibility to know when to attack, and when not to. If the tank is struggling, there should be more communication among everyone involved. Also, we definitely shouldn't cater to impatient people.
not a single talent tree was shown
I have tons of videos for talents. Not what the video states, or in the description. Thanks for watching!
Couldn't figure out how to tank in vanilla, and just wasted everyones time. Sort of stopped playing in groups at all around that time and solo'd every game since

Appreciate all the love on my tanking videos and all my others ones! Must be great videos if people’s only complaint/cry is nameplates even though I recommend them to players every single video ❤️
oh you can have 2h in defensive stance? didnt know that haha
Why wouldn’t you? Defensive stance says nothing about what you can have equipped. Dingleberry.
Honestly, from a healer POV, screw you for this "guide". Sure you can "tank" low level dungeons with a 2H, at the expense of your healer. Now there is a bunch of these little idiots running around nearly wiping the group because they take a shit ton of damage, and don't wait for healer to get mana back.
@@Geminei where do I say anything about not waiting for healers? So because of my guide that means your experiences are my fault? You need a reality check, and coming at me like that is wild. Also, learn how to use quotations. Have a great day.
@frenziiii As I said they take a lot more damage than necessary because of your suggestion to tank using a 2h. Ive tanked the low level dungeons before and had zero issues holding aggro, maintaining rage, and reducing damage taken. We can do constant pulls because the healer has mana because I'm not taking stupid amounts of damage. And yes I used tank in quotations cause sure you can hold aggro with a 2h but your healer suffers. And yes, coming at you because typing in "low level tanking classic wow" your video is the first to pop on the list and while you have some GREAT suggestions such as the shout spam, the 2h thing is bullshit.
@ It’s not, but you’re welcome to your opinion. Be sure that people are single targeting, mobs are being marked, call out that you would like to CC mobs if needed, etc. Fix the issues you see in YOUR groups before you come at me, because I’m the problem in YOUR experiences, right? Thanks for watching :)
@frenziiii I do all of that. Guess who brought me here? I main a healer and asked a 2h tank what guide said to use a 2h and he named your video. So yes. You are part of the problem my friend. I guess ignorance is bliss in your little world.
