Fever is the symptom of many diseases in children. As dengue cases are on rise now-a days, Parents should understand how to handle fever at home. Is fever you friend or foe. In most cases fever is a friend. We should understand that fever it’s only an indication that the body is fighting a disease and invasion of pathogens in the body
• Fever only shows that there is WBC proliferation in the body which reduces the survival of germs . It helps in activation of the immune system.
• Common symptoms the child may have due to fever are mild chills, bodyace, headache, weakness, loss of appetite.
• But it can be an initiation of serious disease -
- If there is fever in less than 3 month child.
- If the fever lasts for more than 5 days,
- If there are red flag signs like the child is dull, lethargic, not feeding well, excessive crying, red rashes, continuous vomiting, heavy breathing, cold clammy skin
- If the child is having chronic illness, prolonged fever and along with weight loss
How do I control fever at home
If the fever is more than 99.5F
1. Paracetamol in appropriate dose is the treatment of choice - Try to give the medicine to the child and do not try to feed the child at this stage.. The child may vomit and the paracetamol will not be effective. It the child is vomiting continuously we can give Paracetamol as a suppository
2. Tepid sponging - if the fever is high as paracetamol will take some to bring down the temperature. During this time the child should be given sponging with normal water. Do not use ice or ice water.
3. Give him plenty of fluids so that he is not dehydrated
4. The child should be fed at proper intervals to maintain the nutrition
So do not fear with the sign of fever as it can be easily managed at home with proper guidelines
