I know they did, and in the Middle East it still happens. It angers Americans, who have settler roots, when talking about what was done to Native people here. Now, the European explorers had a chance to assist in ending those things by teaching the Gospels, but leaving afterwards. Instead the coveted the continent, and genocided the original citizens, and kidnapping Africans for the slave trade. The so- called Christians KNEW better !! But they wanted what they wanted. One of my favorite actors in one of my favorite movies. I think I learned more about the politics of the various Native nations from that movie than I learned in school. Wes Studi makes a really effective bad guy, although we understand Magua's motives. My favorite Magua moment was when Alice jumps off a cliff rather than go with him and his reaction is, "Oh, well, it's your loss then." Wonderful piece of acting.
I grew up in my late teens in Dallas and then Ft Worth watching Bobbie Wygant on Channel 5 NBC doing her interviews with hundreds of actors. She always did it very professionally and she showed the world how the people of Texas felt about what came out on TV and film. Loved every minute of it.
Wes Studi is a master of his craft. He should have gotten an Oscar for his role as Magua. You simultaneously deplore his unabashed cruelty and empathize with his profound suffering. The part where he opened up to the French general when he asked him "Magua why do you so hate the British?" Was such a moving dialogue. Maguas character was especially intelligent playing both sides and not showing his hand. I read the book by James Fennimore Cooper and Cora and Uncas are supposed to be in love, and Cora is mentioned as being general Munro's elder daughter hinted to be mulatto. I could see the beautiful and talented actress Thandi Newton (Sally Hemmings, Interview with a Vampire)if it was based on the books description. It is interesting the movie adaptation changed the story from Cora and Uncas falling in love to Alice and Uncas. I wished more time had been given to Alice and Uncas to develop their romance but you can see a few instances where Uncas reaches out to protect her and how their eyes betray their deep love at the climatic cliff scene which is the most moving scene of the film. I have much respect for Mr. Studi and the complexity he brings to the role of Magua. This man is an exceptionally authentic and convincing actor. I also loved the detail to historical context which clearly show the internal hierarchy of the warring tribes and their intelligence and cunning in dealing with the French and British. Duncan acts as interpreter when the very old chief is speaking in French to mete out the punishment and the fate of Munro's daughters the captured Cora and Alice . Eric Schweig (Uncas) and Jodhi May (Alice) were also endearing as the ill fated lovers Alice and Uncas. The fatherly love of Russel Means' character Chingachgook (who also adopted the orphan Hawkeye) towards his only son and heir Uncas is especially heartbreaking. Easily one of my favorite movies of all time.

His was an exceptional performance because you could see his ferocity, feel his deadly mean-ness, and yet his sensitivity when he shared that his children had been killed by the whites. A good actor not only goes into his character, he makes the audience feel a myriad of emotions to varying degrees. Wes was a Huron warrior and leader, and he had to convey the raw feel of those warriors during that time - and convey so commandingly and strongly he did. The look on his face, the stares, the nuances in his eyes as he beckoned Madeleine's sister away from the cliff ledge - an amazing actor who deserves an Acaedemy award. The Last of The Mohicans would not have been what it is without Wes Studi as Magua opposite DDL. Yes you said it right Wess Studi deserves a Oscar to represent his people and recognize who he is and his character play as maqua. I am proud as being a half Pequot and Scottish. My great great grandma was a princess as a Pequot Indian in her tribe.I go back as far 1620's my father side.🙋

I don’t see this man, as I don’t see any, as a particular racial figure, but just a charming presence. I may seem childlike, but I see him for him, nothing else. Lovely interview, thank you.
The Indians were just like lots and lots of other persons who thoughout history who have been conquered by others. Over a period of several hundred years, they lost ground. Mostly the survivors have just interbreed with the invaders. just as the Mexicans did with the Spanish. The big difference is that in the case of the United States, the invaders came as a flood of white settlers. So many people of Indian ancestry look like Europeans, unlike the Mexicans who generally look more like indians.
I Love you i am so happy for the showing of what the real people the Indians have had to suffer from the taking of their lands, and your performance is excellent and I am a favorite fan Joy

I remember reading a romantic novel called Ghost Fox that was based during the same time period of The Last of the Mochican's, obviously fiction but it was based in history as well. I gained a lot from the story, particularly an understanding of the different factions, their attitudes towards each other, the loves and the brutalities. I loved the character Wes Studi played in The Mochican's movie, on the basis of being convinced of the character, I would have been terrified if I'd met him, so very well played indeed.
I can't picture Wes being a cowboy his part as a Indian is super and only Indian parts. Oscar for sure, Wes is the best Indian performer then all, he scared me in Last of the Mohicans movie as the character.
There's lots of old photographs about, of Native Americans working as ranch hands cowboys etc. Some even had ranches of there own like Chief Quannah Parker of the Commanche.Wes would make a great cowboy.
I remember watching this film as a young man and it just gave me so many feelings, wonder, pondering... really hit me thinking. And he made the film. He just got it so right.

So many people of Indian ancestry look like Europeans, unlike the Mexicans who generally look more like indians.
this man's take on the state of Indian/caucasian peoples. beautiful acting. beautiful man.
One of my favorite actors .
There's a clarity and intensity to him that must be appreciated and respected.
I Love you i am so happy for the showing of what the real people the Indians have had to suffer from the taking of their lands, and your performance is excellent and I am a favorite fan Joy
Great Movie..And we enjoy watching it frequently. .
And is nice to see this gentleman in his real life..
Till now still watching
Thats movie very much.
So refreshing to hear Wes Studi speak like this in 2021
Phenomenal actor!! Love everyone of his acting performances. Mr. Studi expresses his film characters perfectly.
Communication is so fascinating and he communicates so well with words and his EYES..
They are intense
I'm only a couple minutes into this video but already this guy is making an impact on me. He's very well spoken and engaging and he takes interest in what he's speaking about, not just a talking head! 👍
The most authentic portrayal of a native Americans in The history of Cinema. He was born to play that roll
Dam good actor I even like his role in mystery men.
There's lots of old photographs about, of Native Americans working as ranch hands cowboys etc. Some even had ranches of there own like Chief Quannah Parker of the Commanche.Wes would make a great cowboy.
Wes was just amazing in that roll. He was so bad and yet I knew where he was coming from. He just did a great job.
He was perfect for the roll and thank you for great performance
I remember watching this film as a young man and it just gave me so many feelings, wonder, pondering... really hit me thinking. And he made the film. He just got it so right.
For a face that scares and puts you in awe. His attitude and voice is so soothing..
You were just absolutely amazing sure your true warrior of the roughness of the Mohicans
This guy is such a talented individual. This is one of my favorite movies ever. Between Wes and Daniel Day Lewis it’s just a great movie and so much truth. I just love the movie so much
Outstanding performance, I saw the film years ago and was blown away.
So many PERFECT performances .... I admire and have much love for you Wes Studi!

Their real name was 8endat, or Wendat, as for the Iroquois, their name was Hau-de-noo-sau-nee, "People of the longhouse ".
All my respects Mr Studi, you are an awesome actor and artist, and a gentleman.
Really thoughtful and informative responses to some pretty good questions.
I like the early '90s style jacket and mullet👍
Mr. Studi is surprisingly articulate. It shows the depth of his learning.

Last of the Mohicans is one of my favorite films. The acting, music, photography and story were outstanding. Magua is one of the great screen villains of all time.
He can look so scary in movies. Like the last warrior, you want to face on any battlefield. Great actor.
