  • An in-depth analysis comparing Northern and Southern California. These two halves of the state have been rivals for a long time. In this video I compare cities, national parks, scenic beauty, climate, beaches, economics, companies headquartered there, food, music and sports teams. It's a wide range of categories meant to be comprehensive and objective to help determine which half of the state is better.

I'm from the desolate northern Calif area near Red Bluff. Orange County is a conservative stronghold next to totally liberal LA. The airport there is "John Wayne International." When you stand in the Bay Area and look past the Golden Gate bridge toward the setting sun and the Pacific, it is truly awe-inspiring. California is a really beautiful state once you leave the cities. I would recommend that every American take at least one drive from San Francisco up the coast to Crescent City. You will be stumbling all over yourself to find the right superlatives to describe the wonder.

HAHAHA yaaSSS!! San diego native here, and full on im just gonna say it......no one heres cares about any "rivalry" with other places. We dont feel the need to compete because we dont have to. Celebrities come HERE to "get away" and relax, know WHY? because we treat them like regular people!! Tom cruz could come here and walk down the street, and most folks here will not bother them.
This has been noted by other celebrities that ive seen in interviews before over the years. Will ferrell has family down here in chula vista, Nick canons mother used to live right up the road from my mother in laws house (which i now OWN) as well as others!
If your a celeb you can come here on the down low and NOT feel harassed. Stars KNOW that, and thats why they will flock here everytime.
Kids are also taught NOT to just run up to them and bother them (or at least they were taught that when i was a kid in the late 80's/early 90's. We were told that they are people too and we want them to come back to our little town again so its best we not bother them while their trying to relax.

This is an excellent video. Interesting which cities you chose to match up, but still. I think people get a pretty good idea of the populated parts of the state.
I know you've done a video now on the Central Valley, which was really cool. Can you do a video on the far Northern California (State of Jefferson) area and one of that very weird part of California around the Salton sea? And maybe discuss how the foothill / mountain towns are very different from the rest of California, both northern and southern? You're doing a great job of showing the diversity, but I still think people are unaware of just how intensely culturally diverse California is. Some parts of the state are hard to differentiate from Appalachia, and some parts seem like living on Mars. As crowded as the state is, there are so many out of the way tiny little desert towns and foothill towns and beach enclaves... It's not all wall-to-wall people. I know you know this, but not sure everybody else does.

I like this, it’s a good comparison but also depends on how much weight you give the categories. I have to say I disagree with the food aspect, San Francisco has some of the best food I’ve ever eaten, consistently. But I am sure loving living in Los Angeles and building a fun, dynamic life there in the sunshine!

Certainly a lot is just my opinion, especially with food and music. My intent was to make a lighthearted comparison that was "subliminally educational". And I do love the food scene in SF. Every time I'm there I hit up a couple of places I love and know will be good and then try a couple of new places. I've (almost) never been disappointed.

If you want fog and cool go across the bridge, and if you want sun and heat go through the tunnel. If you want to see both, drive up in the Oakland hills above the Caldicott Tunnel.

The Bay Area has the best weather in the world. Its not too hot not too cold its always somewhere in the middle year round

It is usually in the middle but the funny part is it can have like 5 days a year where it’s 105 and 30 degrees on the same day

Great job, a very fun and well-researched comparison. California truly has it all! Two more considerations:
    1. SoCal has sensational Mexican food.
    2. SoCal is more diverse (like NYC) than NorCal.
    Hasta!

Santa Barbara is the southernmost part of NorCal attitude wise while simultaneously being the most northern looks of LA

Central California is somewhere around just east of Coalinga. Central coast is Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo. There is a whole lot more of Northern California than you think... it's just not well populated. I once folded a California map in to 4ths to see where California's center, it came real close to just east of Coalinga. There are miles and miles of beautiful pristine coastline North of San Francisco, like Bodega Bay, Mendocino, Humboldt and Crescent City.... all the way to Oregon. ✌😎

Santa Barbara is considered Southern California,
Santa Barbara is definitely not Northern California.
      Not even close.
There is alot more to Northern California than Monterey and San Francisco. Northern California is HUGE.

Pavement, a rock band, have two songs about the North/South conflict. 'Two States' from the album 'Slanted and Enchanted', and 'Unfair' from 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain'. I think the main singer dude lives in Portland, Oregon now. What do you make of that? Go North?

I know the bands I'm about to say are primarily punk/metal, but I thought I'd share a little more music knowledge. Bands from NorCal include Green Day, Deftones, Papa Roach, AFI, and many others. Bands from SoCal include Tool, Korn, Rage Against The Machine, Avenged Sevenfold, System of a Down, and many others. Also, (according to eventbrite) Sacramento is the fastest growing music scene in the US, while Los Angeles is slowly shrinking as far as the music scene goes.
