    For the first time this topic is crystal clear in my head, all thanks to you! Your way of explaining, slides, the accompanying material and practice questions on the Physics Classroom website are exquisitely helpful. Phenomenal!

    This was a great video for me as a substitute teacher. I often walk in to classes with no knowledge of what will be covered for the day. Today it was vector sums which I haven't had since college! I can now get thru the day helping students add and graph vectors. Thanks. 🙂

    Doubt : the rule is to connect the vectors head-to-tail in triangle method, right? But when we draw the diagram, why is the resultant vector connected to the given vectors in tail-to-tail or head-to-head fashion?
    Edit : Please help

      When you add vectors A + B they're added in a head to tail fashion. But the resultant is not being added; it's simply the result of what you get when you add the 2 vectors. The resultant is always drawn from start to finish. That is, it is drawn from the tail of the 1st vector to the arrowhead of the last vector. That's why we call it the result of adding the 2 vectors A + B.

    How did you get 1m by adding .5 + .6 + .3 together? that's what I am slumped on, my professor gave another vector of 3m, East and 4m, North and the Resultant was 5? Please help

      Direction matters. .5 +.3 in same direction =.8.
      And .8 + .6 at right angles is 1.0. Right angle vectors add by Pythagorean theorem.

    0.5+0.6+0.3 is equal to 1.4, not 1. Am I understanding something wrong or does distance get removed or...?

      You are missing the idea that vectors are being added in direction matters. 0.5 + 0.6 + 0.3 is only = 1.4 if all 3 vectors are going in the same direction. If they are not in the same direction but at right angles to each other, then you must use the Pythagorean Theorem.

    u used Pythagorean? how do we use it if we have 3 given numbers?

    • @PhysicsclassroomVideos
      @PhysicsclassroomVideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First combine 2 of them into 1. For instance,, add 7 m west to 2 m east to get 5m weat.

      Why add 0.3mi to 0.5mi to get 0.8mi because both numbers are in the same direction (east). Now we know that are x-component (east) is 0.8mi and are y-component (north) is 0.6mi. All you do now is the Pythagorean theorem. You can replace the a^2 + b^2 with x^2 + y^2 since we are using the x and y axis. So plug in the numbers:
      (0.8^2) + (0.6)^2 to get 1. Now take the square root of 1.
      ✔️1= 1
      And that’s how you get 1.0mi
