Tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto

Ryuichi Sakamoto died on the 28th of March 2023. This video is a tribute to this unique and influential artist whose innovative and pioneering musical mind, powerful sonic vision, and harmonic simplicity influenced the generations of musicians from King Crimson to Johann Johannsson or Max Richter. His early works inspired new musical genres like electronic music, technopop, hip-hop, cyberpunk, and ambient house music.
He also created masterpieces as a film scores compositor. He worked with the most acknowledged movie directors among others Bertolucci, Brian de Palma, Oliver Stone, Nagisa Oshima, Aldomovar, and Inarritu. He won multiple times international awards like Golden Globe, Oscar, and Grammy.
Sakamoto starred in The Last Emperor and Happy Christmas Mr. Lawrence with David Bowie.
The piece I play in this video is titled Rain and is part of the soundtrack of the movie The last emperor. Sakamoto originally arranged it for a string orchestra to emphasize the lyric ambiance. In my arrangement, however, I wanted to underline the dynamics and positivity that are inherently embedded in this masterpiece. And so, I wanted the music reflects the positive energy, hope, and beauty that Sakamoto provided to us through his music, genius, inspiration, and actions.
