    Any action movie directed by John Carpenter is automatically more badass and epic than any of the modern shitfest CGI trash

      This movie had some of the best CGI I've ever seen, the beauty of it is that it doesn't attempt to be the main attraction, only a showcase of falsiness of the audience who's putting so much focus on effects. The film's effects are so good exactly because they look so weird. It's not about how realistic things are in this film (based on our own perception of reality), it's about how much you're willing to get lost in its own world.

      I love me some John Carpenter films. Vampires to Assault on Precinct 13 (the original). Christine to They Live. The Fog to Body Bags. And all of the mainstays. Buuuuut I’d be careless to ignore the “ugh” factor when I think of films like Escape From LA and Ghosts of Mars.
      Films like Broken Arrow and Face/Off were redefining action films with very little CGI around the time of Escape from LA’s production and release. Yes I know comparing John Woo to John Carpenter in regards to action films seems unfair but we know Carpenter CAN direct decent action films so I kind of throw my hands up and say “the fk were you thinking Johnny?!”
      While the sets and costume work were great and more imaginative than any Star Wars film post Return of the Jedi, Escape from LA took a fun and innovative post apocalyptic romp (Escape from New York) and cheapened its legacy imo. Russell is and always will be a badass in ANYTHING he does no matter how awful the plot may be. I mean who else can play a one eyed badass (Snake Plissken) and turn around and play a fake one eyed badass (Captain Ron) and not miss a beat? Awful writing, surfing some of the lamest CGI effects and an aging Kurt Russell stiffly running yet somehow being awesome at basketball killed it for me. But Escape From LA’s musical score will always be on my playlist because Carpenter will ALWAYS be the best composer. John Williams and Hans Zimmer can eat an orchestra of 🍆

    Escape from New York was one of the first films I bought on VHS. My dad bought a massive JVC VHS recorder back in 1982. I recall watching Escape from New York, Terminator, Aliens and Conan the Barbarian until the vhs tapes woreout on that JVC! I still recall the mechanical sounds that monster JVC recorder would make on rewind, forward or stop. It was like you were operating a CNC machine in a machine shop! Good times and memories...I thought Escape from LA was way underrated!

      It's not going to happen. Kurt Russel and any one who resembles him are not welcome in Woketard LALA Land. It's such a shame that Hideo Kojima is prohibited from admiring Kurt Russell because Kurt Russell is a straight white male and his politics are not woke enough for Hollywood! Horrible JJ Abrams forced Kojima to accept a bisexaully coded latinxer (bisexually coded Oscar "Wilde" Isaac, aka Poe bisexual Ho for Finn) so that a race swap and lbgqts representation could be inserted into the Metal Gear live actions movie. That's so oppressive and manilpulative and white privileged of JJ Abrams to dictate what Hideo Kojima, a Japanese man, must like and approve of. Kojima originally strongly preferred a strong white American male type like Kurt Russell, NOT A BISEXUAL LATINXER STEALTH LARPER.

    I remember a year ago (maybe a little more) when I first saw this movie, hearing it was incredibly terrible, and watched it because I was in a mood for watching a "so bad, it's good" movie. I remember being angry; not because the movie was bad but because was great.
    While watching the end of the movie with somebody else, when it turned out Snake wasn't in harm's way (being a hologram at the time) having the real remote control to the Doomsday device and using it to shutdown the entire Earth, and that person I was watching the movie with said he "saw it coming". How? This movie is loaded with so-o-o-o many distractions, I was paralyzed on the couch I was sitting on. My body refused to move because I might miss out. Pausing was out of the question because then the movie's momentum would be gone (and the paralysis.)
    I had a trust with movie reviewers and the public but now ... it's mostly gone. If the 4th Transformers movie is a success, then it's completely gone (in the public at least.)

    Before irony got ironied to death, we had Carpenter and Verhoeven getting all meta on our asses, not quite turning the camera back on themselves but playing games with two-way mirrors. I was their ignorant teenage audience, then I grew into deeper understanding. Escape from L.A. is genius and might pair well with its shared universe counterpart, The Apple, another morally correct and physically fit dystopia.

    Kurt Russel has always been a master at portraying iconic characters. From the second you first lay eye(s) on Snake Plissken, Jack Burton et al, they instantly stick with you. I would love to see another sequel (though the oft cited reboot without Russel or Carpenter attached leaves me doubting). Oh, thanks for this review, it pretty much sums up what I love about the action genre of the 80's and 90's.

  • @BazTheStoryteller
    @BazTheStoryteller 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This movie needs a special edition Blu Ray release. Maybe it will include interviews with Kurt, John Carpenter and Bruce Campbell.
    The fact you have Snake himself co-writing the movie makes it interesting.
    Its not as good as the first movie, but still a fun 90's action flick.

  • @cloudtx

    That parody of the MGS4 installation at the end was fucking brilliant Razor. I must admit, I didn't like this one since I love the original Escape from New York so much. But I must admit, you do bring some good points and it's not as bad as everyone paints it to be. The can duel scene and the ending by themselves make it worthy of a watch.

    The main problem of this movie is probably that it is a sequel to Escape from New York. The movies are tonally completely different. New York is a gritty image of a depressing, dystopian future, and LA is a fun, humorous satire.

      @stannnleee3440 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kurt Russell is phenomenal in this film. I like this one better than the LA escape one. you know, It's such a shame that Hideo Kojima is prohibited from admiring Kurt Russell because Kurt Russell is a straight white male and his politics are not woke enough for Hollywood!

      ***** well aware of the shitty twist ending. doesn't change the fact the 90% of the movie is a reboot of the original movie. nearly scene by scene.
      i think what happened is it started as a reboot but by the end they realized how bad it fails in that goal and decided to unconvincingly try to pass it off as a prequel.

    • @fakenews6133
      @fakenews6133 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love John Carpenter. He's from not too far from me in KY. What I love about him, he's quite aware. Example is he's a Leftie, he'll say I want large govt but I hate authority, and you can't have large govt without large authority. It's contradiction, but it's true, John is aware and honest enough to admit this.
    On top of that, he's a big fan of the Western genre, Rio Bravo is among his favorites. The guy had an amazing run from 1976-1998 with Vampires. I understand his cynicism with Hollywood, he's not incorrect.

      ***** Is the complete oppositive it was Plisken that influenced Solid Snake and Metal Gear and hence Kojima not the other way around. Kojima makes this very clear that he watch American media of 80s and 90s towards his various cultual references in his work. He even names Solid Snake Plisken for while in MGS2. Escape from NY and L.A came out first than Metal Gear Solid.
