My soda ash rant was wrong!! Update video up!

  • Right after uploading this video I got to thinking about the things I said about soda ash soaking vs sprinkling. Oh I guessed that applying soda ash later by sprinkling it on might help the dye to flow more and look better. So I did a side-by-side test where the only thing that I changed was when I applied the soda ash. What I discovered is that I was absolutely wrong. I got the complete opposite results that I expected. Back when I was doing the cold mist method I started mixing soda ash into my dyes to make them easier to sprinkle. I didn’t realize that having the soda ash in the dye and sprinkling on top would make such a big difference in the results. Not all of my dyes have soda ash in them so patterns that I thought I was seeing were being skewed quite a bit by some dies randomly having sa in them and some not.

    I luv your soda ash tangent 😅 thats been my theory. If it's pre ashed the dye grabs on too quick, even with liquid...now back to watching.

      I’m glad to know that you noticed that as well! I’m curious if you’ve gotten red to flow better by holding back SA until later in the process. I might try that soon.

    I loved hearing your soda ash theory in the beginning of the vid! I’ve been trying to do my own research and figure out what the advantages are of presoaking vs sprinkling and haven’t found much!

    • @corkylorenz
      @corkylorenz  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think I was wrong about my thoughts on presoaking and sprinkling. I will have a new video coming out soon. After I posted this one I started reflecting on what I said and realized I should do a test to make sure that I wasn’t misleading people. The results make me realize that soda ash matters a lot and in the opposite way that I thought it did.😆

    Such a helpful explanation of why/ when not to SAS. I can't wait to check out more of your videos to see how the black dye going down first turns out.

      Quick thought about black dyes based on recent shirts I have rinsed. Raven reacts way too fast for flowy ice dye and the subtle shadow effect on geodes. It gets blotchy.
      Better black (used on this shirt) seems great for flowy ice dye. Haven’t tried it on geodes.
      Jacquard’s jet black reacts really slow, which is helpful for getting softness, but can accidentally get too washed out if too much ice is used.
      Thanks for watching and for your feedback!

    I really love all your videos and tie dye. Thank you for all the tips and tricks. I was wondering if you're still using the 95 /5 t-shirts? If so where do you get them? Also what are the dimensions of that metal crate box that you used for the T-shirt? And do you use the poly fleece dry or damp? TY!

    Mixing soda ash with dye works best with blues and other sticky dyes, makes them flow way better off of a spoon or other tool for application! I'm always worried that moisture from the air will activate it even though I try hard to keep things sealed. I generally mix it like that when I'm going to use hot water to dye, it bonds FAST!

    I just did my first three T-shirts and only scrunch them. I soaked them and soda Ash water and also sprinkled it on top after I put the dye on the ice. The results were all too dark for me. These videos are very helpful. I am a little confused, did you pre-soak in soda ash or sprinkle it on top of the dye on the ice?

    With this shirt, when did you do the SA? I appreciate your theory on SA, and totally agree. Thanks for your videos, they are really helpful ❤️

    • @corkylorenz
      @corkylorenz  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes! Sorry I accidentally edited that info out. I soda ash soaked then and then got on that tangent because I was wondering if I should have just dampened them without SA. Might be worth trying for stubborn colors like red.

    You mentioned that you do not soak your shirts for the geode so that the die that you put right on the shirt will flow through before grabbing the fabric... do you also do this with your TDS? Would this stop the speckle effect?

    • @corkylorenz
      @corkylorenz  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For this particular shirt I did pre-soak in soda ash and I did not sprinkle on any soda ash on top. After posting this video I was reflecting on what I said and decided to do a test with two shirts and realized I was probably completely wrong with my theory. New video coming soon. 😅

      Local fabric store like Joann’s or hobby lobby. I get the cheapest stuff. Anti-pill, polar fleece… I don’t think it matters too much. Hope you have fun with it
