  • Mechanical Switch Comparison: Gateron Blue vs. Cherry MX Blue vs. Razer Green
Today, I have three variations of my favorite mechanical switch: Gateron Blue, Cherry MX Blue, and Razer Green because for razer, their equivalent of the blue switch is green. Be ready for a lot of sound and typing tests, i'm also gonna talk about which of the three I prefer and why at the end of this video. Let's get started.

My thought is that the loudness doesn't come from the switch itself but from the resonance of the hollow plastic cap above it and the plastic shell of the keyboard itself. It acts like the soundboard of a guitar. The type of plastic, the thickness, the shape, it all plays a role. So find a better keyboard with better caps and it will be less loud. My bet is that if you had a keyboard with no shell, it would drastically reduce the noise level. I'm also wondering what it would be like if you were to take a solid compound like hot glue or epoxy and fill in the gaps under each cap. Would the filling in reduce the noise level?

That's why different board size often have different sounds.

I have a Keychron K1 V3 and that is exactly what I discovered. I feel like the gateron blue, although loud, is even better than the Cherry MX in my opinion. I think a lot of it has to do with how often you use a laptop keyboard like a MacBook scissor, Surface or something similar. The transition from a laptop low profile keyboard to the gateron blue just feels more natural. If you never use anything but a mechanical keyboard on a desk than I can see why the gaterons are just not the same experience. but you are right, it is personal preference.

I like the way that the Razer greens sounded the most, it is just more satisfying. I just believe that cherry mx manufactures better switches mainly because that is what they specialize in. they almost exclusively make switches so they have the time and experience to make theirs better. That and when he removed the keycaps in the first comparison you could hear the spring on the inside of the switch and that should not be happening

Honestly while the Greetech switches are an improvement they still are not great. It's more or less accepted by the enthusiast community at large either on Reddit MK or GeekHack that gaterons are smoother than Cherry or Razer by a wide margin. Greetech while more reliable then Razers older Switches still feel scratchy compared to gateron or Cherry and simply are not as pleasant to type on.

      They're also the highest pitched.
They type great, but if you get them, I recommend getting them on a keyboard with an enclosed design, not with floating keys.

The Gaterons sound cheaper. They claim 60 grams but they feel far lighter than that, again cheaper feel with weaker springs. And all this, of course, because they are cheaper. But it's all about feel and what you prefer. Personally, I prefer the Cherry MX Blues. There is a sort of paradox of the sturdier switch with a stronger spring is that it also feels softer, where as the Gaterons sound and feel harsher to me.
