When it was introduced in the 1960s, the Firebird shattered preconceptions of the electric guitar. Inspired by the iconic tailfins and alluring curves of American automobiles of the time, it's earned its place in Rock 'n' Roll history. Gibson have made a number of design tweaks since then, but this remains close to the timeless Firebird formula.

Both the Firebird and Thunderbird were designed and released in conjunction in 1963.
The designer was actually a car designer, Raymond H. Dietrich, who had nothing to do with the Pontiac Firebird but I'm still gonna mention it just because.
Juan Wayne - initially I was thinking that's bs until I realized you're talking guitar and bass, not Pontiac and Ford. Lol
@@Mudder1310 Of course! That would be just preposterous.
Explorer was first and failed.
1974gmw I don’t know...it worked out pretty well for James Hetfield and The Edge
@@FastRedPonyCar failed as in sales bud.
2016 me: I can play better than that Anderton guy.
2019 me: I wish I could play like that Anderton guy.
SirVicconius it’s definitely cool watching him grow as a player isn’t it !
Can't deny how good Lee's playing has been in the last year. Cheers!
Horacio Garcia yeah Im starting to enjoy it. Pete is brilliant. Im glad Lee puts him to work
Go lee
@@riheg I want to be half as good as Pete! :(
Lee is killing it!
I could be off here but I have the impression Lee is a tad more relaxed in video's with Danish Pete.
I swear, in an alternate universe the firebird would have been the most popular guitar from gibson. Such a great sounding and playing instrument.
If only Jimmy Page would've chosen the firebird over les paul
It looks like shit.
@@antihebrew In your opinion, I guess. But I quite like it.
@@paulg3686 Why not just get an Explorer?
@Zyklon B Maybe they dont like the explorer the same way you don't like the firebird (yet clicked on the video still?)
Some like pointy, some like curved. It's literally just opinions you have yours and others have there's.
Pete seems to bring out the best in the Captain. Awesome Firebird sounds guys.
When I see a Firebird I think Johnny Winter. Amazing blues rock player.
same here, he has such a filthy texas blues sound, really cool!
Saw him live at my town hall! Fuckin loud as hell and probably the coolest guy that lived
Johnny Winter is the reason why I own day or I own now a firebird. Ste is the man I think of in terms of a firebird flyer. I was fortunate enough to have met him several times. On the east coast and the West coast. One of my very good friends was his doctor. In New York City Long island City New York. So I had the opportunity of meeting him. I'm one occasion we were waiting backstage to go up and have a talk with him after the show and the person who was waiting in front of us is chubby checker not going to say any more about that one LOL
THIS!!! Take a pilgrimage to Beaumont TX to see his birthplace.
Amen. I've seen most of the 60s 70s guitar heroes except Jimi, Page, & EC. But the two best IMO were Johnny (saw him 3x) & the great Alvin Lee. Saw a show in 1974 King Crimson/Robin Trower/10 Years After. Alvin was on fire thst night. Every time I saw Johnny he was amazing. Now you know I'm an old guy.
7:57 the editor is a legend!
Always nice to see a video on the Firebird. Really, people always talk about the origin of the design and then how “different” it is. But this is a guitar that does actually sound different and creates many new sounds in the context of the music you make. Perhaps you only get that by actually playing one. They are very versatile without being transparent the way a Strat tends to be. The feel of the neck position, but also the balance of the headstock and the profile of the neck need to be described too, because they contribute a lot to what it feels like to play. Above all they are a stage guitar, not for sitting down and noodling in your bedroom. They demand attention from an audience and demand commitment from the player.
I'd heard the pick ups are completely different than PAF or other humbuckers that have a single magnet with the slug then the adjustable poles. Firebird actually has two magnets side by side with the coil wrapped around them, hence no pole pieces. The internal looks similar to a Hot Rail, but of course they're different. Low output but amazing sound.
Nailed it! Well said.
Believe it or not it's my favorite guitar for sitting down and noodling. Never even held one until I bought one used on a whim. It's my #1 and I'm never parting with it
I dont believe that bullshit at the end; you can play how you wanna play with it. But it really is a stand out instrument with remarkable, attention grabbing sound. I think the reason it isn't more popular because the shape is kinda ugly (and they're *exorbitantly* expensive).
Fossilmatic have you ever played a Firebird? I own a couple and though I play mostly at home and jam with my friend I do have to say a Firebird is quite easy and natural to play sitting down. The neck does stick out a little further than say an SG or Les Paul but its easy enough to get used to
My friend Huell Hung prefers a belly cut on the lower side.
Wow, that opening jam is definitely one of your best!
The guy on right (Pete?) is great. I would prefer to see him more as opposed to Chapman
@Scram Jam seems like your guys wish came true :d
Firebird pickups and Mini Humbuckers are 2 different things. The Firebird was designed to compete with the Strat and therefore the pickups were specifically designed to be bright. They're slightly underwound compared to Mini hums and use different magnets.
I believe they even have a different system inside them, with two blades instead of individual pole pieces. Sorta like a hotrail pickup, if it were uncovered.
They're still mini-humbuckers but not like on a les paul deluxe, rail magnets instead of pole pieces inside so it's almost like a p90 double coil
@@TheTapMusic you're right. Trad hb have 1 magnet with a "slug" & then pole pieces. Firebird pups are as you say 2 magnets side by side with the windings around them, no poles. Low out put, but very versatile pups.
Lee has great vibrato. I enjoy listening to you two jammin' and soloing.
Just ordered the tobacco burst! I’m so excited! Can’t wait. I was interested in the SG, I tried one out but it didn’t feel right to me. I tried the Firebird and I was instantly amazed! What a cool monster! 🤘
When touring in the '70's, with a solid state Marshall 50 watt amp, the white Firebird, was my go to guitar. The balance and feel were excellent! Glad to see you standing and playing Capt.!
The firebird is one of my dream guitars! It is just so different from everything else, I would love one with P90s, though.
Now there’s an idea
I replaced my neck pickup with a p90 and love it. I believe there are firedbird “studio” models with a flat top and p90s, dots, slightly different pickguard
When that firebird logo be posing like a QUEEN👏👏
This guitar made Captain Lee Anderton stand up to shred a solo..... how you not gonna buy one?
Might be my favorite video with Pete and the captain. You both really seemed to connect and have fun. Sounded great made me want to get a firebird myself
Cap's lead playing keeps getting better and better.
My Firebird case fits on the backseat of my Mazda 3 with about 1mm to spare between the rear armrests of the doors. Perfect fit!
I'm always amazed when I see the prices on "vintage firebirds" when barely anyone plays them
Everyone: We want to check out those new SGs!
Andertons: 7 types of Les Paul and then Firebirds, got it.
@Michael William Never mind that. Just do the videos now and release a patch when the guitars arrive.
@Michael William THANKS FOR THE INFO. WHY ARE WE SHOUTING?
I am far more interested in the birds than the sgs but to each their own.
We’re just keeping you in suspense... The good news is that there is an SG video scheduled for Monday... the bad news is that the 61 SGs still haven’t arrived, so you won’t be seeing those for a while.
@@andertons Are the new Standard SGs any different from the early 2019 versions? The specs seem to be the same; only the price has changed, with a £200 increase. Has the quality improved that much?
came for the Firebird awesomeness, stayed for Rory's awesome video editing. WHO LET DA DOGS OUT?!
Pretty sure im the only one thats picking up on the intro jam sounding like a slightly altered "stay with me" by rod stewart.
Firebirds deserve more LOVE!! They're freaking uhmazing. I'm going to buy one soon.
Absolutely love the FireBird
Loved the Johnny Winter vibe on Petes playing in this!
Oh my god, Pete’s 0.5 seconds of Yesterday at 8:58 had me in pieces! 🤣
before this video, I didn't think I needed a Firebird. Thanks for showing me who wrong I was fellas
Dude, y'all killed me with that "Who Let the Dogs Out?" edit!
Their producer is a minor god.
There have been 2 basic shapes of Firebirds. Reverse, which was demoed here, and Non-Reverse Firebird. Reverse Birds are neck through construction. Non-Reverse are usually set neck construction. What's not to love about them. Sonically, they sit real pretty in a mix.
Great tone on the opening song.
I'm in love with the idea of the classic strap-guitar cable trick with these guitars. Using an angled cable, it achieves this amazing super flat, low profile look.
I love my 2019 Firebird 5. It’s easily my favorite guitar of my collection.
I just found my guitar. I've been drawn to the strat sound forever but man!! That Firebird is both super clean but can get really nasty as well. It surprises me that more County artists don't use a Firebird rather than the Teli
Just my opinion, but the Firebird was always a Rock machine. I love Telecasters because Muddy played one, but seems the country guys were drawn to the Teles, 335, & Gretsch guitars, a few played Strats as well. Still the Firebird just looks great too.(just my opinion)
@@bluesingmusic3443 Agreed. The Firebird is a sweet guitar for sure.
It is the best sounding guitar I have ever heard.
I'm surprised just as you are about Country Music guitarists not choosing the Gibson Firebird over the Fender Telecaster. My Firebird gets a good twang sound and I would say an even better twang sound that my Fender Telecaster.
Was this an 'after a pub lunch feeling happy' shoot? Love it. Love my firebird.
After such a long Gibson drought, it is great to see them back on this channel! =) Love the look and sound of the Firebird.
Lee - your leads are awesome in this video!
I‘m so glad the Firebird is back!
"Stay with me, stay with me, for tonight you better stay with me"
Oh good.. I'm not the only one that was singing that at the beginning lol
What a joyful couple of jams. Wonderful.
I’m straight and all, but man it’s hot when Pete runs it straight in, especially in the middle position. 🎸🔥
Rickey Medlocke absolutely crushes with his Firebird - Listen to Highway Song and get your doors blown off
Just received my firebird last week,,love it
That final jam was awesome
Man those sound absolutely killer
You can really tell when you and pete connect with an instrument ... Its awesome ... 🌹❤🌹
Lee's Rhythm playing reminded me of something Ronnie Wood and the Faces would play
Hells yes!
Same here
It is
aQuestionableQuestion same here
I. Want. One! I can't wait to see the rest of the line! Thanks gents.
Missing the headstock carves!
I liked the steinberger tuners they were using too... looks like these tuners wouldn’t allow the carve on the one side?
Sort of the Marshall Plexi of the guitar world: does one thing massively well to the degree that you just want to hang out there always
"Non Reverse" not reverse reverse Cap'n .You guys sound pretty darn good !
One of the best opening jams you guys have ever done.
You should start testing guitars while standing too. Even if they are more traditional shaped it would be nice to know your quick thoughts on what they feel like while standing especially for things like neck dive and overall weight on the shoulder.
Ooooohhh, that final jam is just perfect!!
That was Johnny Winters favorite guitar.
I have been thinking about a firebird for years but keep putting it off. But I’m really liking them.
11:55 what a sound!
I’m fan of the Firebird. Just got a Bonamassa Firebird yesterday. As for the new Gibson Firebird they need to go back to the original style tuners . Also I’d like to see them do a non reverse Firebird.
This tone fits the Cap'ns playing damn good, some of the best tones I've heard from him!
Lee come along so much as a player in recent times, love to see it!
Those were some epically glorious tones!!!!
Just saw this video, and gotta say, this might be the most musical sounding (or at least top 10) intro, both performance and recordingwise.
Best solo from the Captain EVER! Congrats on those super chops! Cheers from Chile 🇨🇱
These videos are great, they are so good they should be used as TH-cam ads by Gibson!
The case looks about the size of my double neck case.. not even a blanket !! Cool firebirds. I'd like to have one in dark green once.
It is the cleanest, best playing guitar I have ever heard.
That intro-jam made my regular meal on of the best tasting I've ever had.
That cherry red looks fire! Absolutely amazing guitar.
The improve jazz raggae lick was FIRE
Got to be the coolest Gibson around. I have mini humbuckers in my Les paul deluxe there awesome.
Picking one up tomorrow. Had one a few years ago with the Steinberger tuners and the way overpowered ceramic pickups and traded it off. The new ones have a re-designed Alnico 5 pickups that are more traditional sounding.
Such a take it easy tone and style from this guitar. The fire bird is here for a good time. I love it 👍
Check out Steve Winwood's green reverse firebird.
Opening jam was awesome!!
They sound fantastic great playing too
I love Firebirds.
Love my 2016 Firebird with the banjo tuners. Btw... it came with a gig bag
also worth mentioning is that the firebird was Gibsons take on the offset designs Fender made popular, the jazzmaster, jaguar etc .. Gibson needed an offset guitar to compete with Fender, and got Raymond Deitrich of Packard and Studebaker fame on board to design the bird.
I love the Firebirds! I have a 2018 Studio with P90s, which has the non-reverse headstock like Pete asked about. It's my #1 for sure at this point. Would like to add a standard to my collection though! That cherry finished one that Pete was playing looks great!
Good Lord that is my favorite tone I have ever heard on an Anderton’s video! What amp is Pete using? Lee your playing has improved so much in the 7 years I have been watching, you are an inspiration to this old guy/rookie guitarist. Time to go check out a Firebird at my local guitar shop!
Peace!
Man, Lees playing has so much improved over the last year. I came here from JustinGuitar when they did the first video together and wondered who was this dude who was trying to learn something new. I related to Lee cause I was on a similar level and I was kinda stuck and all I did was noodling around. So I subscribed and became a fan of you guys. I even purchased pedals from you. Now seeing Lee having such a giant leap is really great. It is motivating by seeing what you can do by following those lessons and demotivating at the same time cause I feel I will never catch up with you! :) Anyway Lee, good job, keep it up.
Nice playing together 🎉
I put a set of mini's in ML (Dean not Chapman) and I know somebody out there is gonna scream WHY!!!!!!!! But I thought that that was Gibson's try to get P90 sounds without the noise. I love it, gives a very 70's sound
this is easily one of the best video of you guys together , killing it on those babies !!!!
Long gone now, my favorite was a non-reverse 64(?) with 3 p90s and vibrola.
Favourite.
bring on the Johnny Winter!
deadly guitars!
One of the best reviews in a while (Gibson’s included). Nice work boys.. 😎🐨🎸
I thought it's a Fender channel :) Finally Gibson. BTW I bought two Les Paul Standards one one of two is crazy poorly made. Cuts on the binding, Finish issues and the stop tail piece is put with an angle incorrectly. Today I'm driving to Nanaimo to return one Les Paul. I will upload video about that on Monday. So be aware. Don't buy a guitar which you don't see.
bLOODY Hell LEE!! that intro was super! Very melodic - And my god that outro jam!!! I’m beyond words!
The firebird and the Thunderbird both came out in 1963
@Spiral Architect lol nah, the Gibson thunderbird
Man, captain was on a roll there!
Listening y'alls opening jams just dills my pickle
Love the design. They sound absolutely wicked when using a slide. (Listen to Johnny Winter/Second Winter album. Yes it's old, but he absolutely smokes Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited. As well as putting his Firebird V through its paces. I saw him 3 times, he was absolutely amazing guitarist.)
Firebird pickups are awesome.
Nice strap Lee! You should stand. It gives the weird phallic protrusion on the lower horn less dangle in its angle.
The Capt rockin out at 12:20! 😎
Gotta love my man lee
And them birds too!
Best intro jam yet!
