  • Ruston and Hornsby tandem locomotives 165DE 0-4-0s 421439 and 423658, were both offered for tender as part of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society’s reorganisation of unused exhibits, but no group seemed much interested on taking on the pair. However Jordan Thompson owner of the Thompson Loco Collection stepped in to save the unique tandem locomotives with help from Andrew Briddon The locomotives were built in 1958 for the former Colvilles Limited’s Clyde Ironworks in Glasgow. The tandem system allowed the locomotives to be controlled by one driver giving a 4 axle 330hp locomotive which could also be used as 2 separate 165hp locomotives for use on lighter duties. This gave them great flexibility for use in the ironworks with its varied duties.
The Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS) Core Collection, acquired 1978. Operational. diesel electric locomotive, Colvilles, Clyde Iron Works No 3 Built 1958, Ruston & Hornsby, Lincoln. Works No.423658. 165DE type.
Supplied to the Scottish iron and steel industry, with jumper controls for multiple working. Donated by British Steel Corporation.
The Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS) Core Collection, acquired 1976. Operational. diesel electric locomotive, Colvilles, Clyde Iron Works No 1 Built 1958, Ruston & Hornsby, Lincoln. Works No.421439. 165DE type.
Supplied to the Scottish iron and steel industry, with jumper controls for multiple working. Donated by British Steel Corporation.
Thankfully now saved by Jordan Thompson these last surviving Ruston and Hornsby tandem locomotives 165DE 0-4-0s 421439 and 423658, will now join the Thompson Locomotive Collection Peak Rail, Darley Dale, Derbyshire It will be a long project as unfortunately 423658 (No.3) has a cracked engine block but a spare was thrown in so it's a case of build up a fresh engine from the 2. 421439 (No.1) will hopefully be more straightforward as she was in use before her engine was stripped to fit new bearing shells which was never completed but should hopefully be in a better position to get running soon. And they will both have the Tandem system reinstated and updated to feature train Air and Vacuum brakes. Its Jordan Thompsons Intentions to restore the pair of locomotives back to full working order and I sincerely wish him all the very best for his future endeavors. This will proceed alongside existing fleet locomotive, Yorkshire Engine Company 2679 of 1961, Ford No.3 “Jack”.Thompson Loco Collection.

Nice to know they have been kept together. I often wonder with the number of locos taken between sites across the UK why more Railways don't build a drop down area for a trailer to reverse into to enable level loading / unloading rather like old railway end loading docks but with track on the top and road vehicles in the 'dock' area.

Impressive with the 0-4-0 shunter propelling both dead 0-4-0 locos up that steep loading ramp in damp conditions with no wheel slip, good driver!

very nice save! A Ruston 165DE is a beautiful shunter both to look at and to drive. But the Tandam design looks really unique. It would make a fine collection anywhere and even better when they're both working in time!

So, as these are now owned by Jordan Thompson, does that make these locomotives the Thompson Twins?
I'm glad they haven't ended up going for scrap. It will be great to see them in action one day.

Railfans in the U.S. call these little locos "critters" -- as in odd, small animals. In the states most of them have been replaced by "Trackmobile" type shunters which can operate on road or rail and do not need runaround tracks. Nice to see these saved.

The tandem pair will roughly equal a GE 44 tonner, still used in some places in North Am, Aus and elsewhere.

A tip o' the hat to that lorry driver, great skills. We were deprived of the 'best bit' though, seeing him reversing the trailer through the narrow gap seen @ 1:25.

Well done! These tandem locos are truly a rarity! It would have been a shame to have to send them to scrap. Do let us know when they're up and mobile again, won't you?

Another brilliant video from B&K, I have watched everyone you have made and I feel as though I personally know all your employees lol. the only fault I can find is that as an 83 year old I cannot read as fast as I once could, it would greatly help me and possibly many other viewers if you could leave the captions on a few seconds longer.
Once again fantastic work and I hope to come up from Manchester and have a ride on one of your trains,

YT has an option in settings to slow or speed up the video. You can also hit pause.
(hit the gear button at the bottom in the video, press playback speed) there is also an option for fine control of speed, but that is rarely needed.

Health and safety with their cursed flashing rear lights. If you didn’t have epilepsy before being trapped behind one of these lorry’s in a motorway tail back, you will after an hour or so. Mind you, it is difficult to see a huge lorry with a locomotive on the back.
