    We just got back home from Bermuda where we rented one. Back seat is waaaay too tight. But it was fun to drive and accomplished its mission. BUT, plan your trips around charging. They recommended not letting the charge go below 50%. NO! Don't let it go below about 70%. It died about 1.5 miles from our ship and we had to find a nearby plug and charge it for a good hour. But we did find a nice local man who helped us out. Next time, in Sept, we'll try the Tazzari, a side-by-side model, charge, charge, charge ......

    I just got back from a little more than two weeks there. I visited last year and had a scooter. This year I tried out the Anaig from Oleander, as versus some other “car” rental, primarily because I could charge the Anaig at my hotel.
    A few things for first time visitors: The small car rentals are expensive. With full insurance, you’ll pay about $130/day. A lot of American insurance companies don’t cover you outside the US or off the continent, so double check before you go. As well as the hassle of charging, you should know that the options to charge a particular vehicle are limited. Anaigs use regular 110 Volt plugins, but not all the others do.
    Mine came fully charged and never ran out, but I was staying on the west side and primarily driving no farther than Hamilton, in the center of the island. The battery gauge, as Doug mentioned in his review, is misleading as the vehicle won’t run with less than 50-60% of full charge. I recharged each time I got back to the hotel. No one told me that I was essentially “out of gas at half a tank” when I got the rental, so be aware.
    The island’s normal speed limit is 35 km/hr (about 21 mph), but it’s not unusual for traffic to be moving around 55 km/hr (35 mph). Police do patrol and park with radar to catch speeders to some extent. My understanding is that they don’t tend to pull drivers doing 55 (km) or less, but that they’ll definitely write tickets for 60+.
    Not usually an issue in the Anaig, though, as they’re not powerful. I talked with a few other Anaig drivers and there was consensus that the cars seem to hard downshift somewhere around 50-55 km/hr if they’re being pushed too hard. After the forced downshift, they re-engage when you’ve slowed to about 35 km/hr. The Anaig functions best if you don’t floor it, but keep the pedal about halfway down or so on straightaways, work up to full speed and avoid the forced, hard downshift. Hope all that makes sense.
    My rental had good tires and seemed to handle quite well. It took sharp curves smoothly and gripped the road well. Going up hills can be an issue, especially as the battery gets weaker. It wasn’t unusual to be down to 30 km/hr by the time I was at the top of a hill and sometimes even slower. Of course, you might be holding up other drivers at that point, so I’d try to pull into bus stop areas or off the side to let them pass as most Bermudan roads are one lane in each direction.
    Hamilton is more cosmopolitan, but my overall impression is that Bermudans honk their horns pretty regularly - but only to say hi to those they know. Drivers pull out in front of each other more than I’m used to, but no one seems upset by it. Tailgating is pretty common, but again, no one seems concerned. It’s pretty laid back over there.

      @690wape said "Anaigs use regular 110 Volt plugins, but not all the others do."
      The 110 VAC is both a blessing and a curse. You have many more locations at which to charge but it's extremely slow. I'm guessing it takes well over 12hrs-and possibly close to 24hrs-to fully charge a drained battery.

      I have to wonder if the Anaig wouldn't have been much more useable (and significantly more fun 😎☀) as a convertible or with at least a sunroof installed? Given the Twizy is also a hardtop and these types of vehicles are built to EU Directive 2002/24/EC, it's possible a convertible roof is not compliant to the Directive. Regardless, that dark interior definitely isn't helping to keep you cooler.
      We a 500e and much like your Anaig, both the Heat or A/C dramatically reduces the range which results in range anxiety; my blood pressure was incrementally going up as range reduced. And heaven forbid you're on the counting on an Anaig to get back to your ship while you or another in your party needs to recharge for (((hours))).
      A couple quick updates:
      (1) Renault discontinued the Twizy in the Fall of 2023. The Mobilize Duo was the intended replacement but it never sold so it was gone before it ever really started.
      (2) What brought me here was an Alibaba advert for the Anaig. It's listed for approx US $6,600 (6% lower for 5+ cars) + $500 shipping + tax. That tax is going to be an absolute deal breaker in the US, should the proposed e-car and battery tariffs made in China go into effect.

    Had you rented a cheap, poorly maintained, malfunctioning chinese gasoline powered vehicle that had not been filled up, would your conclusion had been that internal combustion engine is not the way to go?
    I mean, most of the complaints you had were because it's a low quality chinese cheapo, not beacuse it's electric. I bet even a Renault Twizy (what this thing is obviously a lousy copy of) would have been a lot better.

    • @DOUGandNIKI
      @DOUGandNIKI  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm Probably not we haven't ever been stuck for hours waiting for the tanker to arrive with more gas. Don't get me wrong, I think electric cars will be great with time. They just need a lot more development which is happening quickly. You don't agree?

    • @miloe436
      @miloe436 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DOUGandNIKI You're missing his point. This is just a cheap chinese vehicle, probably with lead acid batteries. At least the Twizy is more representative, with lithium ion batteries and 70 km range wltp. And even the Twizy is outdated today since it hasn't been upgraded since 2012.

      It's still pretty clear that while electric cars are making progress with range and expense. Superchargers are becoming more available but, I don't think anyone is going to say an electric vehicle is just as good as a gas one when you add in all the variables of cost, ease of use, range, etc. It's a work in progress that is definitely making good progress. No?

    • @miloe436
      @miloe436 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DOUGandNIKI You are clearly mistaken if you don't think electric cars are up to par with combustion cars today. Why do you think Model 3 outsells everything in its class?
      Not all countries have cheap gasoline, some countries have 6-7 dollar per gallon. Toghether with tax cuts, it is considerable cheaper to own an electric car when looking at the TCO, total cost of ownership, depending on what country you live in.

      @@miloe436 uhm...because it's a niche little class of cars where those with cash buy toys. small luxury cars is not an indicator. Model 3's annual sales are still 1/2 of the number of Toyota Camry's sold in just one quarter. Not even close. But...I don't think car sales is really what we are talking about? An electric car is a cool toy for a rich family but it is not a cheap and effective tool for moving a family around when you don't have money to throw at your vehicle.
