The lore behind this game is more messed up than you realize. Every enemy you face are people who have been assimilated by the first born (zombies) and trapped in a pocket dimension reliving their lives in a twisted form for all eternity. If they die, they just get reanimated again and again. That's why when you get the game over screen, you see the flies first because that is now your fate. Death in that dimension isn't the end, it's only the beginning.
Dark fantasy is disguised detective stories. Barker doesn't name zombies as "living dead" but "undead", they symbolize unarrested criminals. They're "dead" in the cop's sense, we have evidence they're guilty, but they're still running. This game is about history of occident's interventions in middle-orient, there's only a minority of good soldiers (jericho sections), others are rehabilited criminals (the undeads). The power of this town is symbolized by "the sacrified firstborn", criminals destroy their first children to terrorize others and subject them to illegal activities. In the true and cut end, we play the firstborn possessed by Ross' soul, Barker wanted a happy-end but codemasters disagreed for commercial purpose.

I had the game guide back when this first came out there was supposed to be an immortal enemy on each lvl that you were supposed to actually avoid or you’d be stuck fighting it forever
when I played the game I found the exploding cultists even more disturbing, the way they were so bloated, with their heads wrapped up, dehumanizing them, and the fact that they squeal like pigs right before exploding
when i was a kid, i would play this on easy so i can get a closer look at the monsters without dying. the way the firstborn assimilated them... they barely look human. medieval warriors nailing armor to their flesh? soldiers fused together? roman guards having their skin stretched over their armor? my god this game was dark. and it would b so popular if amazon decides to turn this into a tv show
Tão bom ver alguém falando desse jogo em 2021. Esse jogo é sensacional em todos os aspectos, no meu ver só o final que decepcionou um pouco, mas ainda assim teve o seu toque.

I feel like the enemies in the game along with the very dark Barkeresque themes and story really do deserve a rework and perhaps a sequel?
The Corpse Behemoth is such an unsettling monster, both the design and sound makes it so creepy
dude the crusader children were the worst, their "tentacles" were essentially ripped tendons, muscles, nerves and what not.
But the Corpse Behemoths are so weak. They just attack with repetitive pattern with 0 threat.
