    On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
    If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

    Thanks, you solved a mystery from way back when .. I was a king-air copilot to a rather eccentric ex F4 guy. Of course I asked him about flying the F4 in combat, and he mentioned "the egg", when pushed he just said energy management and waltzed off in his sandals through the baseball bat wielding thugs of war torn Belfast without a care in the world (and I retreated to the hotel).

      I just finished the book On Yankee Station and the author talked about the F-8 community. Was a really good book on some of the tactics used by the Navy during Vietnam.

    • @nickforster748
      @nickforster748 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      F-8 community spent much more time doing visual combat due to the relatively poor capability of their radar & their weapons loadout (4xF2 + gun), whereas the F-4 community spent more time doing BVR intercept training. Rules of engagement in Vietnam often denied BVR declaration of bogies (unidentified aircraft) as hostile, which forced F-4 crews into visual engagements for which they were not (before TOPGUN) properly trained. Poor reliability of the AIM-7 Sparrow in particular, exacerbated the issue. Dan Perderson was the first skipper of TOP GUN & his book by the same name will give you lots of detail about the relative capabilities of the USN at the time & how they learned to employ the F-4 & its weapons systems more appropriately.

    Very cool video, GS. Bracketing is a great tactic. Used it all the time in WWII sims with my buddy, 715B. A solid wing with the propensity for telepathic communication, as it were. We'd call it a bracket on engagement or 'drag 'n bag' when opportunity provided. Engaged did enough to refuse the mark a solution, but keep them predictable. Aside from a low 6 hi speed bounce, bracketing was quite the rush to pull off.

    15:56 they got the audio when pulling g's from me on the toilet

  • @nickforster748
    @nickforster748 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    It’s also worth highlighting that the free fighter is also responsible for collision avoidance on the engaged fighter. This can become tricky when a change of status is required from, for example, engaged status to free as you have to be able to SEE the free fighter to be able to take collision avoidance. If you can’t, this change of contract cannot happen. You can call “continue” which allows an attack to progress in the hope you’ll become VISUAL but the attacking free fighter must continue their responsibility of collision avoidance. Similarly if as the free fighter, you call “engaging” but get no reply, the contract hasn’t changed.

    Very cool. Is this the Vietnam era version of the “Thatch Weave”?

    • @aztec0112
      @aztec0112 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not really......The "Thach Weave" was officially designated by the Navy the "Beam Defense maneuver" and was strictly a gun defense designed to protect against being bounced by more maneuverable Japanese fighters from behind. it required a two plane element to hold a fairly rigid formation abeam each other, laterally displaced by a turn diameter. When bounced from behind, the two planes would turn directly into each other, with the free fighter shooting the enemy in the face at the cross. If he missed, they would simply reverse in the opposite direction, and drag the enemy around for another shot (hence the weave) With the advent of guided missiles, the Thach weave became less relevant and more flexible tactics and formations were needed. Formations and tactics led the Navy to develop the "Loose Deuce" which has been so successful for Navy pilots to this day. Did they use real missiles with a disabled or nonexistent warhead in Top Gun school?

      no they just simulated the kill, no missile launch. There are also training aim9s that can "simulate" a track and a "launch" and for gun kills they would just call a stable 3 second track a kill or something like that.

      Back in 69 they just called the shots, then called the kills. When reviewing the tapes it proved to be not a valid kill, that was frowned upon, so you were careful to call your kills only when you were 100% certain. Of course in DCS it's impossible to evaluate if a shot would have been a kill without launching a missile. So the calls are in place in the campaign, but the missiles won't have any effect. The killed fighter or bandit disengages and egresses.
