Yes, both medical research and many types companies often use animals for live testing. It's no where near as bad as the actual farming industry though. If you're worried about animal rights go vegan. Otherwise the only other outlook is that ALL animals are slaves for humans. Anyone with a view in-between is a hypocrite.
In Med school we used to practice sutures on pigs (only a slice of skin, not on a whole animal!), and once we operated on a living, anaesthetised rat (we performed a splenectomy). When I was closing their abdomen, they started getting awake, so the scrub nurse took them away... I don't know what happened to them, I really hope they didn't get killed. But when I gratuated, I didn't choose surgery as my specialty (internal medicine). Now I'm vegetarian, and I definitely don't agree with this kind of teaching method seen in this scene.
