The driver was explaining at one point that he has very good winter tires, and that if he comes to a stop in a steep hill he would need to use chains in order to go
Winter Tires. Which in the UK is very rare (I know a few who do use them). That is why when we get the once in a few year snowstorm. Everything grinds to a halt.
It also helps having the weight (engine and transmission) right on top of the drive wheels, but "yes", proper winter tires are the real secret. Not those silly "4-season" or "all-weather" compromise tires.

In the Netherlands, our road authorities salt the roads in conditions like this. But what a great driver! The whole ride felt safe. He was in control at all times.
@@JonahHax And even if it did, there are limits. I have experienced snowfall that wasn't necessarily excessive in the amount coming down over a minute, but it was more the steady amount for a looong time of it that caused problems, while it wasn't below -10 (I'm also Dutch). When at some point salting trucks started skidding of of the sloping parts of overpasses, local government decided to quit salting, after already having focused their attention on the main roads and quitting maintaining the cycle and pedestrian pathways because there simply wasn't capacity enough to scoop, brush and salt up against the snowfall. First time my city suspended bus services in my life as well: all buses were ordered to stop anywhere on their route even if their schedule didn't call for it, to take people home as much as possible.
My favorite bus driver. Watching the speedometer had my pucker factor ramping up. Thank you for the beautiful video and I look forward to the next one.
Great video, and the greater nature! I love these winter videos. Did you have snow chains anyway? Do you know wheter the retarder release breaking if it appears to block the tire or not? If not I assume you shouldn't use it. What fuel consumption do you have in these circumstances?
I knew this was France as soon as I saw the car in the beginning. Man do the French LOVE their Peugeots, for some reason. Even moreso than Americans love their F150s
I thought this was uk driving in the snow, but then I thought no vehicles are moving as normal. Lovely driving great use of the Telma retarder. I'm still old school though, manual gearbox, second gear exhaust brake then retarder
Will also depend on the type of retarder honestly, some work on the drive wheels only and require to be disengaged in slippery weather as a result. But I take it buses that are quicker to be driving in mountaineous terrain and/or snow are equipped with different types of retarders :P . There's a clip of an articulated commuter bus in The Netherlands suffering aquaplaning, possibly by having the retarder engaged, and the trailer swerves out like crazy.
The technology that allows you to drive calmly on roads that are probably covered in so much snow and ice is amazing! !💯✨ Even so, your channel name is translated with a shocking name😅🤣😂

I would so rather tackle that snow with my 4x4 truck than ride in a bus that usually isn't equipped with the best tires in the world. Some rocket scientist here in the US thought that is was a great idea to put steering tires on the back of our bus's and not use dedicated drive tires. (What Semi's and some School bus's use) But I guess you guys use chains on the rear wheels going by that one bus you passed.

On ice, you can make rear slide(intarder only act on motion wheels). Best way to slow is using service brake. Its even worse if you use intarder on a truck
Great driver! As a child, I also loved to ride behind the driver and watch his movements. How and what he does.

Same 100 percent!
💯🤣
I'm impressed by the ability of the coach to maintain traction, particularly with rear wheel drive. Seems to be no wheelspin at all
