The struggle of the first lesson the instructor saying "do you hear the engine sound changing?" and not hearing any diference is so real. I thought they were crazy at that time
Me blindly going yes when they asked that knowing damn well I had no idea what they were talking about😅
So true, I passed my driving test about a year ago, could not hear any difference in engine noise, and how I knew when to change gears is because my instructor had a Ford with digital speedometer so I was going up every 10mph, the revs diagram made no sense to me LOL . After I passed, I bought a Corsa and for the first couple of days I felt so clueless.
@@grzybobranie7765 Honestly, I think saying the engine sound is changing when in the bite point is a bit misleading. Generally, the sound is equivalent to the load on the engine, there are situations where the engine is loaded but doesn't have enough power to go uphill, generally is more the vibrations that are transmitted to the whole car that might indicate that the engine is ready to go
I remember I couldn't hear any change in the sound or vibrations of the car. So my instructor said to lift the clutch bit more and bit more untill the car was vibrating really hard. It was on the verge of stalling, but I could finally hear a difference :)
If you learn in a diesel it’s more noticeable, but when I went 20 in 2nd gear, it sounded like my first petrol car was at 5000 revs, which was annoying, plus when I tried to change to 3rd it wouldn’t go in as the speed was too slow.

And that right there is why I've always advocated that every new driver should learn to drive a manual as long as physically capable. You can't learn a manual without learning to read the road 30 seconds ahead of yourself, and that's a skill that stays with you even if you then buy an automatic and never go back.
30 seconds? Are you driving with a telescope?
@@Asto508 I think you're overestimating how far that is. On the motorway, 30 seconds is just over half a mile or about a km. In residential areas at 20mph that's under 300m. Do you need a telescope to see a km?
@@HaralHeisto I think you are completely underestimating how far 300m actually is, especially in cities and even more if you talk about planning ahead.
If you are planning ahead 300m in a city, your plan will be demolished at the next junction or traffic light
@@Asto508 No, I'm not. I genuinely do watch the road that far ahead, and I know what every car in that space is likely to do, and plan accordingly.
This is how you drive safely and smoothly. I'm not just reacting to the actions of the car immediately ahead - I'm taking action based on things happening ahead of them, on the motorway maybe even 20 cars ahead.
The fact you seem to think you can't plan more than 50m ahead is terrifying - you must be an atrocious driver.
Also, the your not understanding why this is relevant to driving a manual suggests you don't drive one. You are *exactly* the sort of driver that results from learning in an automatic.
@@HaralHeisto It's one thing to watch the road far ahead, but another to think you could effectively plan ahead 30s in advance.
You simply can't unless you are driving on a rural very straight long road with minimal traffic and everyone else is driving perfectly.
Otherwise you will have situational changes every 5-10s at max that you need to react on, so your "plan" changes very quickly and very often and it stops being a plan long before you hit the 30s mark.
I actually can give the compliment back to you that you must be an atrocious driver if you think you can actually drive that careless in reality.

I really like John's attitude during this practice run, inserting tiny jokes here and there. Well done, I personally connect with him in a way that I've done my license for manual (14 year ago) and then drove only automatics ever since with the same reason "why do more than I need to, this is not fun for me, it's only a necessity which is stressful for me enough as it is". But I also feel like I should renew the skill of driving a manual itself as knowing the theory is not enough in the long run and I might come to some emergency situation where I will have to jump into a manual and drive somebody somewhere.

Why couldn’t my instructor be like this. On my first lesson he was shouting in my face and hitting the dashboard in frustration when I made mistakes. As a punishment he forced me to drive home on a busy main road in 1st gear and kept saying “look at all these people you’re holding up” I’ve completely lost all confidence and the thought of learning again as much as I want too fills me with anxiety! 😢
Please get a new instructor. Why pay for a bad service. You deserve a nice teacher. It's not your fault. You're a learner. Never let anyone shout at you while learning. Bless you

Just to be clear, that really is not normal instructor behaviour. This guy should not be a driving instructor, and if you are in the UK you should probably complain to the DVLA about him. Not all instructors will be as good as Richard, but none of them should be as bad as the guy you described. That's not instruction, that's abuse.
My first driving instructor was rather snappy, I think he forgot the reason I was making mistakes was because I DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE, thankfully other instructors are available and I passed my test on the first go with a far more patient instructor, change your instructor

I’ve been driving stick for 40 plus years in the US. I learned partially at first by sitting in the passenger seat getting used to the gear lever. I had a mostly forgiving 67 bug as my first car. I so wish I’d had videos like this when I started out. Very well done.

I wish more instructors would give a bottom-up explanation of how the clutch and gears work like Richard does. Makes it so much more obvious what's happening and why. A mechanical understanding of the drivetrain gives you many more tools in your driving belt.

@@F3udF1st My first instructor would look at me stupid for asking for explanations of what the clutch was actually doing and how it worked. He obviously didn't know and it made him annoyed I guess, learning how it works is pretty essential to learning for me.
Trying to unlearn automatic habits is hard. John did even better in just an hour or two than I did.

My first drive with a manual was on my PC simulator.
It was pretty rough, I stalled several times.
When I finally got to driving for my license, I had a pretty good wheel and shifter, so all I needed to learn was the clutch. Around 1 month later I had my license.
You're a great teacher, I wish I had one back in the days I was learning :D So many instructors have the appetite to say "ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL US?"

Well Done John 👍 I think you should continue to pursue a manual licence. Even if you don't drive a manual car every day, you will always hold a new skill and knowldge which may be useful from time to time.
This video reminds me of the motorcycle laws and how stupid they are. People who complete their Compulsory Basic Training on an automatic moped can then buy a geared bike and ride on the road with zero training. At least with an automatic car licence, you can only drive an _automatic_
That also America with auto and manual. America got no Manual license.
@@SteveComputerFix I find it fascinating that the UK and other European countries even have a separate automatic and manual license. I got my driver's license about 20 years ago. I learned how to drive a manual only fours years ago, when I decided to buy a second car and thought it'd be fun to get a manual. I taught myself by watching Richard's videos. I find that whether I drive my automatic car or my manual car, there's not much difference. The rules of the road are the same. You stop at red lights and stop signs, you follow the speed limits, you pay attention to traffic around you. A manual adds a couple extra steps when you drive, that's it. When you learn, you stall a lot. But even experienced manual drivers stall every now and then. If theoretically my state required a manual license, I don't see how getting one would have made me a safer driver.
@hamsterama it really doesn't in my opinion. Of course auto is very nice. I'm in an auto loaner since my manual in the shop. But it nice just going right away at stop or lights and up hills 🤣🤣 the only major difference is the power in my case. As my car is 340hp compare to this 120hp auto.

@@SteveComputerFix I confess that my primary car is still my automatic. I agree, it's really nice to get the car going at hills and stoplights by just lifting my foot off the brake! And not having to worry about constantly shifting gears up and down during rush hour traffic, too. I use my manual car on weekends and holidays, when traffic is lighter. My manual is a 2020 Toyota Corolla hatchback, which has 169 hp. It's no sports car, but it's still a lot of fun to drive! My automatic is a 2009 Toyota Yaris, which I've owned since new. It's got 106 hp, which is totally fine for a car that small.
I passed my first driving test in Canada in an automatic at the grand old age of 31. Got my full manual after returning to the UK, passed by the skin of my teeth. Still wonder if I am destroying my car/gearbox all time, but I guess ignorance is bliss...............

I learned to drive a manual, resisted the urge to learn in an automatic. My very first test was today. My car, the one I bought 6 months ago to learn to drive in, developed a driving fault just 2 hrs before my test. So I never even got to the test centre. Been perfectly fine these last 6 months.
Oh no, feel gutted for you 😢- hope you manage to get the problem sorted & re-book your test. I was in the same situation as you, hubby bought me a little "runaround" Corsa to learn in, which was 18 years old at the time, as my lessons were cancelled due to the covid pandemic, so at least I got to keep up my practice with him in the car with me. I then sat my test in that car & passed 1st time!! I now have a slightly new(er) car and still watch all the driving instructor videos - like Richard's Conquer Driving - he explains things really well - Good luck when you get re-booked!! 😊👍

@ConquerDriving we found it it's the oxygen/lambda sensor, apparently it can cause the car to judder and lose acceleration. Hopefully get it fixed but it will be another 4 months before I can get another test, unless I find a cancellation.
@DriveSmartDash thank you. Hopefully will get the car fixed, it seems to be an oxygen sensor/lambda sensor fault apparently. This can cause the car to judder and lose acceleration. I re-booked my test but its for November 19th. Lost my £62 though for the test fee for today.
Do you know what's worst? I am 51 and started driving lessons back in 2021 but due to life circumstances, driving instructors that weren't good, a good driving instructor that suddenly moved and couldn't instruct me anymore, it has taken over 3 years to get to the point I felt confident to take my test. I have done my theory twice and passed both times. To get to the final hurdle and through no fault of my own to lose the opportunity has really made me angry and upset.
Anyways, just have to keep looking for those cancellations online for the test. I have had about 30 hrs with instructors and about the same driving with my wife, so I am ready for my test now.

Brilliant teaching. I passed in a manual and drive an automatic but i want to go back to manual because in my opinion manual cars i feel i have more control and are probably easier to drive.

I wish I could get the opportunity to drive a manual truck again. 5-6 gears is easy to keep in your head but it's harder with 12 or 16... With a tall gear lever with terrible feel.
Bless him, he looked like he was about to be asked to walk barefoot over hot coals in the early going. I test drove an auto recently, first time I've ever driven an automatic in my life. And I don't know how common this is, but I did some harsh braking because I slowed enough that you would need to change down in a manual and stomped on the brake as though it was a clutch 😐

Very common, I did that when I was new to automatic and I've heard others do it also.
I did the same. I stomped on the rest area on the left floor by my left foot as if I there’s a clutch pedal and needed to clutch down and change gear after slowing down. And, my left hand grasped the air when I tried to put on first gear while moving off.
Gears 1st and 2nd palm away 3rd and 4th no pressure and 5th 6th palm towards you
John did well, after driving an automatic it will seem like a lot of extra faffing, I've only ever driven manual so I'd probably make a mess of automatic! Let us know John if you make the switch to manual, you did really well, it isn't easy being filmed!

I'm driving a manual for over a year now, one thing that I notice and find really weird is how much some of these "rules" that we first learn don't apply in many situations. For instance, my teacher was so strict about totally leaving the gas pedal before clutch and gear change, while I understand the problem in changing gear with 2000 or more RPMs, sometimes I actually NEED to keep a bit of gas while changing gear. The more you learn, the more smooth it goes, more of these "rules" you understand you will need to break sometimes.

I've moved to the UK after over a decade of driving auto in the USA. My first lesson was alot like john's. There's so much more todo when moving off and slowing down in a manual compared to auto. Planning is really necessary till it can be done without much thought. When doing slow crawls, I find micro adjustments of the clutch bite point to be a lot less forgiving than automatic braking to do slow crawls. The range speed and precision needed for clutch movement is alot more to think about than auto gas and brake. It's what seems to take the most practice.
How long did it take you to master the crawling start-stop clutch control in real life traffic?
Was Richard more shocked that he never drove manual or did not know the offside rule in football?

Difference between Auto and manual is only stopping and building up speed, so basically seconds in it.
Once you get the muscle memory all the foot and hand work with gears are you like you don’t even do them

Yup this just proves me I choose well to go for Automatic only lessons. I hate stalling and I already struggle even with automatic, lessons in manual would just make me rage.

Will a petrol car pull you like in the video? When I learn how to drive I learn in a diesel car and never drove a petrol car and someone told my that if you lift your foot of the gass and you let the car run, a petrol car will stole.
I always just settle at the bite point long enough but never really hear the sound when start, will take care about it in next lesson, feels like it will help some uphill start. My instrusctor always just tell me to hold the bite point a bit longer so it won't stall during uphill... However it is a disel car so easier to get a smooth start I guess.
You can only do that with a diesel. A petrol needs some extra gas when doing uphill due to its lower torque. Holding at the bite point is in general a bad idea if you want to wear out your clutch. Just give it more gas and have a quicker gear change.

I passed my test in the early 70's in a manual and all but 4 of my cars have been manual. What we take for granted driving manuals for years is i guess daunting for drivers new to a clutch/gear lever. I personally like the involvement and connection of a manual but i have to admit an auto is a heck of a lot "easier" in nose to tail city driving.
Most auto boxes were horrible way back then with no engine breaking to speak of but nowadays with modern automatics, especially those with paddle shift are way better.
Maybe when i get old i,ll consider one 😇 but for now, long live the gear lever.

At least here in the USA, most cars are auto and torque converter style. Many new cars with this kind have the paddle shifters or a way for you to select gear. It is not supposed to harm the transmission, but constantly putting the car in a lower gear for braking increases fluid temps and heat kills the transmission the most. Yeah it wears your brakes more, but you get the most out of your auto. The issue is though that the less common DCT kind are more like a manual so the engine braking use of paddles might be better and not risk harm.... but dcts are not as reliable as normal autos. Overall, if you buy an auto just use your brakes.
I passed in an auto when I was 17, so almost 20 years ago now 😮 lately I’ve been thinking of learning a manual but it’s a rather daunting prospect if I’m honest… any advice? 😅
My advice is, just do it! You won't regret it! Just like you, I got my driver's license almost 20 years ago. Four years ago, I bought a brand new manual car, just for fun. I taught myself how to drive a manual by watching Richard's videos, and then going out and practicing. It would have been nice if I had an instructor. But there are no driving schools that teach manual in my part of Ohio, so I had to teach myself. If I can do it, you can do it, too. With TH-cam, it's easier than ever to learn. I advise you to keep your automatic car. It will take the stress off of learning to drive a manual, because you won't feel pressure to learn fast.
I have to change betweeen manual and Auto cars about 5 times a day and sometimes I have to say to myself this is a manual or this is an auto. the first auto I drove after taking my test in a manual I tucked my left foot undewr the seat out of the way, just forget you have a left leg in an auto.
Are different bite points of different manual cars pronounced enough to be noticed? Do you ever stall when moving off in a new manual car whilst getting used to a previous one's bite point?
I ve been learning to drive in a manual car it's taking me a long time to get my licence I don't know if it's a good idea to change to a automatic people say I will pass sooner and its easier I am taking lessons in a manual at the moment I tried to postpone my driving test I couldn't find a ideal date and my theory is due to expire in October
Most cars are automatic anyway these days and eventually all cars will be automatic with the intent on going fully electric within 10 years

At most you’re going to stop suddenly some times (the brake pedal is huge in automatic cars and the “clutch down” reflex when emergency braking is there) at least this is what happens to me.

All electric cars are automatic only so you would have an automatic only license

Interesting to watch, I passed in automatic and have a semi auto car. The good thing about it is you can actually go fully auto mode but use a lever to go up and down gear without the clutch if you want to.
And you can also force the gears to go up and down regardless of if you are in auto mode.
I can’t see a reason why I would ever do a manual license, i think it’s mainly a thing of the past really.
