      i love this game and i wanna make quite possibly the most informative walkthrough on youtube when im ready, but the ai cheats. nappa starts out with str powered up, so you play as underpowered gohan with nappa who can deal a minimum of more than half your hp in 1 hit. the ai after piccolo always have level ups distributed.
      kid trunks is level 8 for example. just let that sink in, frieza in 10 is level 6, no matter what, you cap at 5, but will also never hit it till 500exp.

    Incredibly late to coming to this video, but regarding the Speed stat, it's actually more useful than you might think. It actually affects accuracy and evasion in addition to turn order, and the higher your speed is compared to your opponent, the more likely you are to guard against (or completely avoid) their mega attacks without having to use the respective cards for those actions during the defense phase. It also helps lower accuracy attacks like a lot of rushes and certain beam cards like Special Beam Cannon hit correctly due to the increased accuracy

    I played this game a bunch in my childhood, and would still consider it my favourite DBZ game to this day. The graphics and the amount of content are really impressive for something made for the GBC, and the combat system has a surprising amount of depth and challenge to it. The OST is also pretty awesome, despite having to work with the limited GBC sound capabilities. I'd welcome a modern remake of this game that sticks to a similar retro-style presentation while fixing some of its flaws (bad English, slow scene progression, lack of skip buttons or chapter selection, making the overworld sections a bit more engaging, adding more of the key characters that were missing (Raditz, Tien, Yamcha, Frieza's forms)).

    I played this game a lot, and I mean A LOT when I was younger, and I only picked it up again recently and I think I found out some new stuff that "gather power" does. Not only do you have access to your limit moves, I think it also increases your stats by a bit, and you can only change the position of your opponent with your stage attack (or combo) while your in that state.
    Also, I think higher speed increaes your chance of randomly guarding/avoiding megaattacks, which you can only do while you're using "guard". I might be wrong on that one though

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TehPipu That actually makes a lot of sense. I always wondered why I couldn't push the enemy around, and it'd only work occasionally.
      After 15~ years, this game continues to surprise me. It is truly spectacular.

    I'm glad I found such a thourough review for this game. I must have it somewhere still, the original cartridge. I had so much fun with this game. It was pretty tough, and I did loose alot, but figuring out the mechanics, what each card does, the very beautiful animation for all of the unique attacks each character had was amazing. That sense of joy when you dodged a cpu's ultimate attack. The rage when they somehow predicted your attack, even when it wasn't a powered up move. The mind blow when piccolo's like acknowledges this is your second playthrough. Really good game, probably better than many modern ones today.

    This is one of my favorite DBZ games Geez that learning curve though but the melee attacks in this game were awesome. I maxed out gohan's strength and used the tail card (which turns you into the oozaru) and used it on nappa for teh LULZ I don't know how many times I played through trying to collect more cards. Supposedly there was an ultimate kamehameha card but I was never able to get it.

      Chico Spark Does it have a different animation? Because I'm trying now, and I can't get it to trigger. I take the same amount of damage as if I don't press anything. I know actual guarding is based on the Spd stat, which is something I found out after this video, but I just can't get this guy to block this attack with "B". I've tried at least 100 times (used a save state as the enemy sent a Super Ki Ball my way, and keep loading state to try and hit it.)

    Nice review! This looks like a pretty cool Dragonball Z game. The card battling makes this game stand out from all of the generic Dragonball fighting games that have been coming out every year, and the new game plus and character unlocks look like they would add a lot of replay value. I'll probably pick this one up if I ever come across it.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pre-PlayStation 1, a lot of DBZ games used cards as their main 'mechanic'. Even a game on the GBA, called "Goku Densetsu", and come to think of it, the DBZ Collectible Card Game is on GBA as well. Prior to that, DBZ popped up on all sorts of whacky consoles and gaming devices, and a lot of it was card-based.
      I think we're seeing a return to that as well, as there are DBZ card games on the 3DS too, but they're Japan-only.
      It's definitely worth researching, as there are some classics!

    when you gather power, your ki and strength increase
    speed isn't useless, it affects the evasion stat which can be utilized with support cards
    many cards are useless, however there are plenty of ways to make interesting builds if you learn enough about the cards through trial and error. Also, if you play in battle mode long enough, you will start to see some more impressive cards and strategies

    • @Jghost11
      @Jghost11 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah the speed stat is actually the best of you take the time to level up to 4 stars (5 lvls means that you only got 4 power ups if I remember correctly). I used to do two on Str and 1 on HP and Ki but I accidentally washed my first cartridge and the second copy I bought was used and had all the players with speed maxed out. At first it looked shitty because you barely did any damage with no extra strength, but after I dodged/blocked two special attacks in a row I was like oh wow this is great, you basically can just beat your opponent with regular combos. But when I restarted on the 2nd game I did 2 Str and 2 Spd so that the game is actually fun and I can still do tons of damage while I mix it up with Spd and Ki cards (ki is the cheapest, while speed is the most expensive) and extra evasive cards so that if my opponent misses once or I block two atks get the advantage. Spd also helps with the timing of regular combos so I am sure that you can get passed 3 secs of input time if you max out Spd before a battle and add a couple of cards.

    i know i'm a bit late to the party, but i loved this game so much! i got a GBC at christmas and my first birthday after that i REALLY wanted a new game. i didn't know about this one, there was no internet to search for games, but once i was in that store and saw a gbc dragonball game, i KNEW i had to take it home.
    it took AGES for me to learn how to play this game, i started discovering features like the future or NG+ only after i picked it up again 2-3 years later, and today i'm still unsure that i completely explored all that this game has to offer.
    a couple things i learned in my many, MANY playthroughs:
    1) powering up also raises your stats a bit. even if you're using a card, if you're not sure about the damage range, it might be worth it to power up
    2)powering up also makes it so that if you hit the enemy with a command attack you MOVE the enemy

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's never too late to enjoy amazing games! Also, I thought moving enemies happened if you did a directional attack in the combo, but then it's been a long time since I've played. I'll have to pay attention to that during my next run through!

      Definitely! I really want to talk about Attack of the Saiyans for NDS, as well as the card-based RPG on SNES. Other than that, I've not thought about covering anything outside of Xenoverse, which I'll focus on once the hype dies down.

    This game needs a remake, Bandai Namco is missing out on a goldmine here.
    It could easily become their most profitable Dragonball game ever. Its so easy to producer, because it doesnt need a combat system.
    Heck.. just give us some Ultimate Tenkachi type of cutscenes, some new cards and characters and we are good.
    This could sell like candy as a new mobile game and no one would complain about microtransactions, since its a card game anyways..

  • @TheScoutRocks

    Speed actually governs your chance to dodge or do an endurance move after you use the "guard" move you thought was end turn. I used to think it was useless too, but now I know it's the most important stat.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shit hey. I still don't like that it's chance-based, as I'd prefer more Ki or more Str, but it's nice that it actually determines something.

    • @TheScoutRocks
      @TheScoutRocks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Casp O'saurus Yeah but if you endure even one valuable attack, your odds of winning that match go up by so much. If you're really consistent, a longer match favors you, right?

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think I'd rather put those stats in HP, and rely on Endurance/Avoid cards. That way if I make a wrong judgement call, I might have the health base to survive. Something about relying on luck irks me.

    • @Jghost11
      @Jghost11 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Speed is actually the best stat for turning the tide of battle, even with it being partially luck based if you max it out (or level it 3-4 times with stars or cards) being able to have free endurance or avoidance actions really makes it easy to control the battle and attack with your specials more frequently. Also add in the evasion boosters and your more likely to dodge atks fully. Basically if you level up strength and Speed by 2 each (at lvl 5) all you need in your deck are 2 Spd ups and 2 evasion cards and you can practically beat your opponent with basic combos. However, I like using beam atks so I add some of those with C.C Refrigerators and Dende cards and just waiting til I can do the super. Because I like to finish fights in a spectacular manner, it take me as long as 45 mins for a single fight but it is really awesome and like a game of chess. However, if you really wanted to you could probably end it in about 20 if you just attacked straight on without trying to set up your speed to super high levels.

  • @HRStudiosTheDungeon
    @HRStudiosTheDungeon 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    With Guard you can time a defense. If you do it right (based on whatever input Up , b or A) you will either dodge or block. It really just depends though.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Robert L. Sneed (Artist Rob) I might have to test that at some point. I find it weird how there's a pretty big lack of information as to how the game works. I guess because it's a card game for the Gameboy, but still!

    • @HRStudiosTheDungeon
      @HRStudiosTheDungeon 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Casposaurus - The Channel That Hugs Back Yeah it's really bad. I spent most of my years when I was younger just spamming B and A and stuff would happen. However from playing the game and beating it 10 times before I sold it, there were unanswered questions but I will always question the Bulma Card...What does that even do? (-____-)

    • @Jghost11
      @Jghost11 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Sneed Bulma lowers a certain stat of the opponent through her "Charm". Also most of those random blocks were also based off of your speed, if you max speed out through leveling up (yes you can use support cards on top of that) it basically because 1 out of 3 times when you can randomly block basic combos. However, I don't remember blocking mid combat without the speed, but I believe it could have easily been a secret part of the game that had to be perfect to stop.

    You were right, I hadn't heard of this game before. I love DBZ, but never got into the handhelds. This one does look really good for a GBC title. It is an interesting idea going for a card based battle system with such a heavy action based subject, but it looks like it works well. I'll have to try to hunt down a copy of this sometime. Great review! :)

    Raditz was great for how little presence he had in terms of story. Possibly in my top ten favorite DBZ characters.
    If you like him as much as I do, you might be interested in Masako X's "What if Raditz turned good?" series of videos where he speculates on what the series might have been like had Raditz pulled a face turn rather than dying right away and becoming one of the Z Warriors, in the form of a partially voice acted fanfic.

    • @Caspicum

    Speed is not useless at all. At higher speeds you can completely dodge special attacks without using any cards like avoid or shockwave. You can also block them for less damage without endurance. Speed is literally the most useful stat if you actually know what you're doing.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd find that out years later, this video is almost a decade old. Has anyone done a statistical breakdown of the chances that speed will influence your dodge/block rate? I'm actually kinda re-doing this video, so I've just clocked it again and gone for a more Str-focused playthrough with characters like Trunk who have the moves for it, but I did specifically put one point in speed for most dudes and didn't notice a higher trigger rate for blocking/dodge. I'd imagine a Kid Buu with a couple points in speed would be a good test subject.

    Pretty sweet review (and editing, taking notes)! I'm actually a little curious to hear your thoughts on the other Dragonball games with RPG elements (legacy of goku 2 and 3, attack of the sayans, Advanced Adventure, based on the superior show ;)). Buu's Fury was pretty good (any game where I can drink beer and murder Broly as a 10-year old is good in my book) but I need to go back and finish LoG 2, as well as this one.
