Facts about the Western Ghats:
- The Western Ghats, also known as the Sahyadri in northern Maharashtra and Sahya Parvatham in Kerala, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Western Ghats are a mountain range that run along the western coast of India, covering over 1,600 km from the Satpura Range in the north to Kanyakumari in the south.
- It passes through Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, covering an area of around 140,000 km².
- It has over 7000+ species of flowering plants, 1800+ non-flowering plants, 100+ mammal species, 500+ bird species, 150+ amphibian species, 6000 insect species, and 250+ freshwater species.
- There are lots of tourist centres that have sprung up in the Western Ghats; such as Ooty, Thekkady etc.
- The Kaveri River, originating from the Western Ghats, gives birth to India’s second-biggest waterfall, Shivasamudram, which powers hydroelectric plants supplying electricity to Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Kolar.
- The forests in the Western Ghats absorb around four million tons of carbon every year, playing a vital role in maintaining India’s ecology.
- Western Ghats are home to 13 national parks, two biosphere reserves, and several wildlife sanctuaries, making it essential to protect this region.

My aim with this reel is to cover complex Indian geography in a fun and simple manner. Because India ki geography kaafi amazing hai. Unique bhi hai. But text books kabhi kabhi complicate kar dete hain, toh samajhna mushkil ho jata hai but it’s important ki hum sabko inke baare mein pta rhe. Europeans spoiled whole Asian culture, not only to do just buisiness but to spoil the backbone of Asia (farming) and to increase the standard of their products and cultivation by decreasing our cultivation and quality of our products through using chemical pesticides and fertilizers and also increasing tax duty on crops during the british raj and even today. Kerala is fully covered on it's Eastern side by Western Ghats. The state of Kerala is fortified by Western Ghats which is the reason for our unique border, language, culture, weather, monsoon, history, dance, music.

Marathas lead by great leader Shivaji maharaj, who stood up against the invaders by building 300 forts across Sahyadri (your english word Western Ghats). In puranas, it is mentioned Sahya parvath(western ghats) was so high even Himalayas itself was short infront of Sahya parvath.. Hence become so proud and arrogant which made Devas to sent Sage Agasthya to the south and he ordered to bow his head and be in the today's height till he return from south.. But Agasthya made a hut and settled in South and never returned which made Sahya to be in today's height forever

Did you know, we Indians used to call the Arabian Sea as Sindhu Samudra? There is an inscription in the sea fort of Arnala, a few miles north of Mumbai, made during the Peshwa times, it refers to this sea as Sindhu Samudra.
Coastal Karnataka receives around 5000-11000 mm rainfall every year thanks to Western Ghat section.

All the rain the gets dumped on the western side would be more evenly distributed over peninsular India. It would have been much greener in the rain shadow regions of interior Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamilnad. Less flooding on the west coast.

The Western Ghats have played a crucial role in shaping the history, culture, and geography of Kerala. As a formidable natural barrier, these mountains limited large-scale migration and invasions from other regions of India, influencing the development of distinct cultural and linguistic identities in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The system of lagoons and backwaters, along with the heavy monsoons, made invasions difficult, protecting the region from many of the conflicts and invasions that affected other parts of India.
During the Sangam era, Kerala and Tamil Nadu shared a common Dravidian culture. However, due to the geographic isolation provided by the Western Ghats, the cultural evolution of these regions diverged.
This divergence led to the development of distinct languages-Malayalam in Kerala and Tamil in Tamil Nadu. Without the Western Ghats, it's plausible that the region now known as Kerala might have remained under the influence of Tamil empires, and Malayalam might not have emerged as a separate language.
Without the Western Ghats, Kerala's climate and geography too might have been more similar to that of Tamil Nadu, potentially impacting the region's agriculture, economy, and way of life.
In the absence of the Western Ghats, the distinct identity of Kerala as we know it today, including its language, cultural practices, and geographical features, might not have developed. Kerala might have been a part of Tamil Nadu, sharing a similar cultural, linguistic, and historical trajectory.
