  • Great Internet Smart Radio but it is rather bad in Longwave and Mediumwave, Shortwave would be good if it was not for the numerous birdies

Thanks for covering the important points regarding this radio. Great idea for a radio, but like many others, I think I'll wait for Version 2 as the negatives of this as a receiver outweigh the positives.

I was looking into that radio. However I wanted to wait on a real radio review like your video Gilles, unlike that Farm guy clickbait video lol. Thank you for fully testing and reviewing this radio. Although they did a first in this type of radio and I give them credit for trying. I hope they will learn and improve some of the ergonomics and especially improve on the electronic / performance issues of this radio. Since I also enjoy Mediumwave DXing, I will pass on this radio. Once again Thank you for your unbiased review. Have a good weekend.

Thank you for your so thorough review. I was considering buying this radio for all it’s features and functionality However, as per your review, I think it would be better if I waited until this can be fixed or corrected. Hopefully the manufacturer will take note! 73! 14:39 I would love to have a radio like this, but like you, I want to see this done properly!

I do credit Choyong for actively monitoring comments/feedback and frequently making timely updates (e.g. SSB and birdie fixes). That being said, I learned a long time ago to never buy version 1.0 of any electronics & to be wary of jack-of-all-trades devices.

I am really glad you did such an awesome detailed review and workout of this radio model! Concise and pertinent review as per usual!
I was considering the purchase of this model over the past few wks but now that I have a better understanding of it's performance and quirks I will defer this purchase until a better option comes across the wire, lol
I like most everything else about the LC90 but if the MW/LW performance is compromised, that significantly affects it's final score.
Hopefully Choyong will address the issues in an upcoming revision/upgrade to this model... I'll look fwd to your review of it!
    Have a good one!

Thank you for your competent review on this unit! I hope they'll fix the problems and there's a real possibility for it to happen - most of the users wanted SSB and they managed to add it quite fast. As a European listener I'd love DAB+ to be added there, too.

All those those birdies are definitely a concern for shortwave listening. It seems like according to the audio in your video it chuffs pretty well also while tuning. I mean it sounded like an old steam locomotive. However, I do agree that it is a nice concept, and a bold step by the manufacturer to include not just an internet radio, but all that into a portable multi-function multi-band receiver. If they can get some good shielding, fix a couple other issues, and the overloading thing it will be quite a trendsetter for the other receiver manufacturers. I was thinking about getting one of these, but due to life issues, I'm not able to right now. After watching your review, that's ok. Maybe somewhere down the road, a new version will emerge that will be better and have all those issues corrected.

Thanks for a good in depth review, and although this receiver may open the door for such an integrated receiver, seems they have work to do on this one...Good timing with the birdie showing up as you did the review, gave a real life glimpse into the issue...I don't always agree with everyone's opinion, but keep it respectful as long as those I may not agree with do...We are all entitled to our opinions, but Farpoint Farms is one gentleman I can have a real issue with his videos...He seems to be more interested in getting out a video than to really do some homework on the subject of the video...Each to their own and I seldom check any of his vid's out anymore...As for the LC-90, seems to be an incomplete product and with the inflated prices for receivers these days, I hope someone can get it right...

Good review. It hit all the things I am concerned about. The birdies would drive me crazy. It's a bit pricey to have that amount of birdies.
I am curious to know if a wire the same length as the whip but connected to the external port would produce the birdies at the same level.
Obviously with an antenna many feet away it would be quiet. I was thinking about the path inside the radio the whip has to take to the RF input stage
vs. the path the external antenna takes to the RF input. Does the external antenna input disconnect the whip? I'm think it might otherwise the whip
would continue picking up the birdies even if your on the external antenna

You did not mention anything about the SIM card slot, what is that for. Also I can't believe they would not have some sort of adjustable attenuation. I am disappointed I had really high hopes
for this radio knowing that there would indeed be problems that would need to be addressed and I hoped that firmware upgrades would be able to see to those problems. It sounds as if many of the problems you experienced are hardware based. This is such a great concept and I really want to support this product but at the cost, ... tragic. I really want this radio to succeed and if they
fix the problems I would probably buy two. Thanks for this review, I really respect your perspective and critiques.

Honest, thoughtful review. Thank you, sir. According to the manual, there are two replaceable 18650 lithium batteries. Apparently, the radio will also take a SIM card for a 4G connection.
I recall many years ago I favored an AM only radio over AM/FM for the purpose of AM DXing. This for the simple reason that the extra dual-band circuitry compromised performance. A wi-fi and terrestrial radio in a single package is a great goal, but it's tough to build a good universal gadget.

I was disappointed to hear your opinion on my work. I thought you'd be more professional. Anyway to reinforce what I've said before, In my opinion this is the best radio I've ever owned. Is it the best shortwave radio? NOPE. Is it the best AM radio? NOPE. Is it the best FM radio? Maybe, but I never listen. It's the best radio I've ever owned because of what you said in the beginning of your video. It's the ONLY radio on the market that combines Internet radio, SW radio, now with SSB mode, AM, FM, Sim card operation, TF playback, and Bluetooth operation in once package. For that reason, I find it to be a unicorn in a world of plain jane radios.
I find every part of it to be fine except the AM (MW) reception. That said in my area daytime use is not happening as we have no stations to receive. Shortwave reception is on par with many radios I've reviewed, not a stand out but certainly not crummy.
I'm also surprised to hear those odd noises in yours at certain frequencies. I now own two of these radios as I recently purchased a second one for my garage and don't have that issue with either of mine.
Still can't believe you would call me out in a disparaging way. Apparently they don't teach manors up there in Canada. Rude, untrue, and uncalled for.
