  • In todays video, we take a look at probably my favourite non metal guitar that I own. This is the ibanez af55 hollowbody. An incredible option for a budget friendly holowbody.

Thanks very much Sean, like many of the comments below I am looking around for something at this price point and your review was extremely useful. Honest and comprehensive. All the best from Australia.

9:58 Picked up mine today at Zuhal Muzik in Istanbul today. Needed something decent and reasonable. was something under $500 US/15.000 TL. I’m an x-pat okie. can’t believe I found your TH-cam bit. it was wonderful. Thank you so much. looking forward to your lessons.

By the way, had them put on flat wounds so to try them out. Sound pretty good so far. I got 12-52 gauge. would that be passable for jazz? no clue what I’m doing but I do like the sound of the AF 55. incidentally, haven’t had a chance to plug it in yet, and it sounds pretty fair as an acoustic.”

An amazing guitar. I bought it primarily for jazz but it is so versatile! I love the sound i can get from it. Thanks for an amazing review!

Thanks for your review :) I have one of these which was a gift from my Dad. I didn't care much for it at first (i'm mostly acoustic guy) , but i must say the more i play it the more i like it, the sign of a good guitar, the bad ones you don't have a tendency to play as much. I have a bigsby tremolo i am considering installing but don't want to kill the resonance of the top. Please keep the videos coming Thanks again!

Great review. Thanks for explaining what flat wound strings are. I just purchased this guitar and I need to make some mods. I’m looking forward to your jazz guitar tutorials. That chord progression you played was beautiful.

Hi, I was looking to buy this axe and slap flatwounds on it... I normally use it with the tone all the way up, and I love how it sounds on your video! I appreciate you taking the time to do so! Thanks a heap! I would be using 11s or 12s but basically same!

Thank you for this! I'm very fond of mine as well. At first, stock pups & Pyramid flatwounds (excellent, btw); then it got a set of D'Addario "half-rounds" (interesting strings w/ qualities of both flat and round wounds). Eventually a Gibson Burstbucker 2 found it's way into the bridge position, and a chrome covered stock Gibson humbucker from the late 70's/early 80's in the neck. I prefer these to the original ceramic magnet pups...less output, sweeter, and very responsive w/ tube amps. At any rate, rw's for blues/rockabilly/(not-too-loud) rock, and flats for jazz--if you have any facility w/ those styles (or are learning them), whole genres are just a string change away.

Everybody's got different tastes but IMO, you're going from extreme to extreme with tone rolled off and tone at full, whereas the sweet spot is usually somewhere in between (and often closer to full than rolled off). I had heard the "roll off your tone" myth for years (thinking it was the reality) but lately I've been learning that amp adjustments are where it's at for jazz, versus mudding things up with the tone rolled all the way off.
This is just one opinion but you might find it a good jumping off point for researching more about the topic: th-cam.com/video/pr-mTHlFlUE/w-d-xo.html
