0:39 This is an example of Farina cuirass of the Royal Italian Army... They could protect against pistol and rifle shots, but against machine gun fire they were completely useless. The best regiments of sappers died in these armours, sent into the open field, in no man's land, on the Asiago plateau and on the Karst mountains, by generals convinced of the "impenetrability" of these armours. The fire from the Austro-Hungarian machine guns ripped them apart like they were made of aluminum. If you are interested in knowing what kind of atrocities were committed on the Italo-Austrian front - by both armies - during the Great War, read the war diary "Un Anno sull'Altipiano" ("A Year on the Plateau"), by Emilio Lussu. It's quite a famous book. There should be an English translation.

IMHO, the coolest WWI helmets and body armor aren't in the video; they were experimental American ones that never got put into actual usage. An expert in the armor of old designed a lot of it.

To my honest, they didn’t want to make very fancy armours because the tank, (the new invention) would go through armour like that. Not to mention more high calibre guns and ammo.
