  • Point Given suffered the worst defeat in his career in the Kentucky Derby. He came to assert himself as the best of his crop with decisive victories in the Preakness and Belmont. His 12¼-length triumph made him the 17th horse to complete the Preakness-Belmont double.
    Final time: 2:26 2/5
    Owner: The Thoroughbred Corporation
    Trainer: Bob Baffert
    Jockey: Gary Stevens

Point Given is the best horse Bob Baffert has ever trained and yes I know he trained 2 Triple Crown winners American Pharoah and Justify.

LOVED Point Given. He reminded me of Forego in that they were both big horses who, once they got rolling for the drive, resembled nothing less than runaway trains.

Not over Spectacular Bid. Point Given was my favorite horse until American Pharoah and Arrogate. You may notice a theme here.

RIP. One of best horses to attempt Triple Crown that did not win Triple Crown. Some horses end up going for the Triple Crown (go into Belmont with a chance), but were never really seen as "great" going into the TC series. I'll Have Another, War Emblem, Charismatic, Funny Cide, etc. In February of 2001.... folks were talking about Point Given, and how he was a a shoe-in to win the TC. He was the real deal. He was in the same tier as American Pharoah and Justify. He was the first horse ever to win FOUR $1 million dollar races in a row.

Stevens had him up way too close to that crazy pace in the Derby. Most of the horses within hailing distance of it folded. A better ride gets him there. And a most deserving TC winner he would have been.

I was at the 2001 Derby, and at the 2000 Breeders' Cup which was also at Churchill where Point Given lost the BC Juvenile to Macho Uno by a short margin. Churchill is a very strange surface in the sense where there are horses that LOVE IT, like Blame, and there are horses who just don't like it, and have a hard time handling the track. On Derby Day 2001, it was very HOT. I thought it was supposed to be spring, but it was hot, and that track was hard and very fast. I remember reading after the race that Stevens told Baffert that PG was not going to like it. The hard and fast track definitely contributed to that ultra fast pace. Why Stevens had PG up that close, I don't know. I think it was a combination of pilot error, which Stevens admitted. PG possibly not liking the track, and hey, it wasn't his day. Oh well. Watching this Belmont is bittersweet for me as a massive fan of both his and his late father, who is also a dual classic winner (Derby-Belmont) Thunder Gulch. That's life.

Not in mine for sure - I'm 83 and not likely to be around very long. Was lucky enough to catch Dr. Fager's incredible mile record also. It was a shame that Secretariat got beaten by a second rater (Onion) and what a tragedy befalling his jockey Ron Turcotte.

Point Given was probably closer to the pace in the Ky Derby than he should have been, but there is no chance that it cost him the race. He simply didn't fire that day. He lost by 12 lengths. Congaree was much closer to the pace than Point Given and he still beat Point Given by 8 lengths.

Exactly correct. Point Given lost the Derby only due to jockey error. Should have been a TC winner. Awesome horse. Gotta laugh as in the Preakness and Belmont he checks out the crowd as he comes down the final straight.

I think Gary Stevens puts too much blame on himself for the Derby loss. Maybe it could have been ran differently with a different outcome, but then again maybe it didn't have to be. I remember an interview with Gary Stevens after the Derby and he said Point Given wasn't even tired or breathing hard after the race… with that, watch Point Given in the stretch. His head is high and he's looking into the stands. I think dealing with the roar of the people (also his first race with stands on the infield) freaked him out and he let up because of it. He started to do the same thing at Preakness but Gary Stevens was able to dig him in better when it started.

The race caller screwed up the final time - 1 minute 26 seconds, I guess he was a bit excited;-)

I also caught Tom Durkin's mistake right away. It's 2:26 and change. Point Given should have won the Triple Crown in 2001and was great in the Belmont, but just think Secretariat did the mile and a half in 2:24 flat. I agree it might be a track record we will never see broken in our lifetime.

If you look at the video while listening to Durkin's call you're astounded at how the call is reflective of nothing that is happening on the screen. Durkin makes the race seem much more open and up in the air. You can see the outcome was never in doubt the entire length of the stretch and even before that. This was a shitty call by Durkin. If you were listening to his call on the radio you'd think the race was a toss up until shortly before the wire.
