  • In today's video I revisit one of my favorite board games ever and teach you how to paint the greenskin faction (goblins, orcs and fimir) along with the undead one (skeletons, zombies and mummies) fast and easy with washes.
    The doors I've used for my Heroquest are from zealotminiature.... But there are other good alternatives there:
    Wizkids doors: amzn.to/3kSLtok
    Mantic doors, double and single, perfect for customizing your Heroquest!: amzn.to/34bn4Vr
    Mantic also has a great set for dungeon furniture: amzn.to/2Y8ih2Z
    Daler Rowney FW Ink Sepia 251, one of my favourite inks EVER:
    amzn.to/3gF7HIg
    For protecting your nicely painted miniatures, nothing beats Testor’s Lacquers:
    • Glosscote: amzn.to/3kznAlF
    • Dullcote: amzn.to/3itIy3r
    • 2 x Glosscote + 2 x Dullcote + Set of Brushes, ABSOLUTE BARGAIN!! amzn.to/2XS5lOy
    Want to start painting? Although I mostly use Citadel paints, I STRONGLY recommend Vallejo colours for painting miniatures. They are great, their bottles are the best and the price vs quality is phenomenal!
    • Vallejo wash set:
    amzn.to/3a0ylsp
    • Vallejo Game Color set:
    amzn.to/33wrUMn
    Quite decent and affordable brushes for beginners and RushtheWashers alike: The Army Painter brush set:
    amzn.to/3iebvQP
    And if you want a good brush without breaking the bank, Da Vinci Maestro Series 10 is for you:
    amzn.to/2XPNasY

    If you want to learn how to play Heroquest and don't want to buy a very expensive second-hand box on eBay, visit www.yeoldeinn.com/ to find all the different versions of the game. I downloaded a lot of materials from said website and I definitely recommend it to new and old gamers alike looking for Heroquest materials!

    I've just got my HQ set and expansions, I'm looking to paint in the NY. I've watched lots of other tutorials but OMFG do they love to GRIMDARK these up with Nuln Oil. HQ is not 40K. It's Warhammer (ish) but RETRO Hammer. Old Hammer. BRIGHT Hammer. And especially this game, a toy. Not an Underdark diorama. I love your brightness and will look to other models. I saw someone do 4 doors in 4 styles, the last was Masters of the Universe cartoon inspired, green and purple. It looked AWESOME. So Greyskullish for me...

      I finished the 6 I started and I moved on to do a bunch of Goblins at once (just finished doing the 2nd coat of Waywatchers on them last night) I'm using a mix of Citadel and Army Painter.
      Overall I'm so thrilled with the minis, I never realized as a kid and it just dawned on me out just how detailed these minis were until I started to paint them.
      I messed up trying to highlight the skeleton with white paint so i'm not thrilled with his ribs and on the Zombie I was a bit to heavy handed with the Dark Tone Wash (AP equivalent of nuln oil, but I think citadel washes are superior) I ended up re-painting the blue gems on the Fimir and Orc to purple as I didn't like the red/blue contrast for the gems
      I think on my next batch of goblins i'm going to give some of them purple shirts and give one a gold axe if I want to use him as a "King Goblin"
      These are literally the first 6 minis i've ever painted and I'm so happy with how they came out, thank you so much! I was showing some of my co-workers the pictures and none of them believed that I hadn't been doing this for a long time!

    Miguel - I'm a newb so please excuse me if I state something wrong. You suggested a Winsor & Newton Kolinsky. When I look these up they seem to have rounded (pointed) tips. The brush you use in the video seems to be flat (no pointy tip). Is there a difference when it comes to painting miniatures with washes? Also, I see many people say you only need one or two brush sizes. Which size(s) do you suggest for painting these types of miniatures with washes? Thanks!

    • @rushthewash
      @rushthewash  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Round always, unless you're using it for drybrushing, and in this case, NEVER use a good brush: old or cheap ones only, because this technique destroys the bristles.
      I use size 1 for most things, that's where you should put your money in. Anything bigger, go for cheaper brushes. Smaller, like a size 0 or 00, pay money for it, because those are worth it.

    • @rushthewash
      @rushthewash  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the late reply. I use "eye-o-meter", depending of what I want to achieve. It is not an exact science: if I want a darker stain, then less water. If I want a dash of color, more water. It is easy to correct, nonetheless: if your ink is too "thick", clear it off while still wet, and do it with more water. If it is too "bland", repeat the wash!

    • @jeremiahembs5343
      @jeremiahembs5343 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vallejo has a set of inks that are very good and a whole set is pretty cheap. You can mix with a little thin medium to make them work more like a wash. There are tutorials on youtube on how to make your own mediums and washes. But usually for washes and inks I just put a little regular paint on a paper plate and just wet my brush and rub it on a bar of ivory soap, dab it a bit on my paper towel, and dip back into the paint and use that for a controlled wash. It flows pretty nicely without any more expense. You can control how wet or concentrated the stuff is by using more paint or more water or more soap or having a mostly dry brush or mostly a wet one. Cheap way to have fun.

    • @rushthewash
      @rushthewash  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to have a good brush for minis, never buy acrylic brushes. Natural hair is the best choice, and of those, sable and kolinsky weasel is the even better choice. I'd practice first with a decent but cheap-ish brush, until I get the knack of it, and then invest on a good quality brush. I'd recommend Raphael 8404 or Winsor & Newton Kolinsky, but add some brush soap to your basket and learn how to take care of your brushes before doing anything with them!
      Enjoy the new hobby!

    Ordered everything to finally paint my HeroQuest (after putting it off for 25 years)! Worth noting quite a few of the listed glazes are no longer made - waywatcher green, Bloodletter, boltgun metal, guilliman blue and lamenters yellow are no longer available. I'm hoping to mix the glazes with combinations of red, yellow, blue and green Vallejo inks, and another generic gun metal to replace botgun. • @rushthewash

      With washes it is like the other way around: you go from lighter colors to darker ones. Yellow is one or the two basic colors that make green, and it also makes orcs look brighter and more 80's paintjob-like. Or course you can do different types of green, with pure green or a base with diluted red or magenta to have a different finish, but this is a type of green tone I like to achieve with my greenskins and it really makes them pop on the table :)
