I liked this movie. It had the right amount eye candy. The film's title misleads into thinking a documentary instead of a fantasy-genre. This movie made me appreciate gold as I usually hate the color, moreover I think it would've made it even better if they gave more historically accuracies to the traditional myths blended smoothly with modern originatilaty. I like the thief making a deal with a god in-exchange to revive the mortal's lover; even Horus admitted that its impossible against the rules. Whitewashing is annoying accusation. We can do whatever to fictional characters, making Thor black doesn't do anything, because despite skin color he would still talk and behave of the Norse culture. Superman as a blackman would still be adopted by farmer parents and talk similar to them. Being born with skin color genetics doesn't automatically make you speak in a certain way. 'certain way' is technique, techniques are taught and/or learnt. You're not born with techniques, you're born with instincts that leads to learning techniques.
I agree with you. While it is not the perfect film, rhe heart that went into this movie just looking at the clips here shows the people involved were doing their best in what they love. And that to me is art.
I like the movie, is fun to watch with it's spectacle scenes and what not, idk why the US people so fussy and harsh about it , there wasn't much pure Egyptian actors/actress anymore, they are mixed with Arabs, ancient Greeks and Romans, why still matters so much? the story is fictional loosely base on the Egyptian mythology, where are these people when that hallmark merlin show cast an African woman to play Guinevere in the Arthurian Tales? weren't she supposed to be white? so much bias
I do think that the complaints about casting came purely from American identity politics. There are plenty of good American cultural exports, but that's not one of them.
You know what, Alex Proyas' previous work "Knowing (2009)" is one of the very few movies that still freak me out. Anyway, since your channel is not afraid to make deep cuts, what do you think of the idea of revisting "Into the Blue (2005)"?
This WTF episode was better constructed than the movie itself. I actually feel bad for the actors in this movie as many of them did not recover after this.
So many bad movies out there...but this one hurt me. It really did. Because I WANTED a movie that dealt with all the cool stuff in Egyptian mythology...and we got this crap. But you know something? I DO have to give it credit for one thing: Anubis wasn't an a-hole. Everything that American media gets their hands on is always: "Oh, god of death? You must be an evil god wanting to supplant all other gods then!" I'm so sick of that crap. They do Hades dirty all the time.
The biggest mistake was apologizing to a non-audience faction which wasn’t ever going to accept any apology since it already has its narrative and was committed to milking it for all it was worth.
I went to see this movie in theaters front row. I was always fascinated by Egypt & it's history but not till this past year i revisited the movie cuz of spiritual findings & it's a gem.
I don't know about the controversy stuff with this movie. I've heard stuff that ancient Egyptians weren't actually black but a different shade. I don't know. All I can comment on is that: I like this movie because it's a dumb-good movie. It's not that amazing, but it's just a movie that's good sometimes when you don't wanna overthink everything. Like Battleships, sometimes you just want something dumb.

I'm sure an Egyptian film company would cast an all Egyptian group of actors, but this is an American film. Just as I'd imagine an African made movie set in England during the Civil War would also be made up of primarily African actors. All this virtue signalling diversity talk is in itself racist. This movie had so much potential to be the Flash Gordon of this generation. But, it failed spectacularly and wasted a cast of good actors, like Gerard Butler, Geoffrey Rush, Rufus Sewell and the late Chadwick Boseman.
It's a pity. They can complain about being sabotaged by the outrage, but they biggest issue is the script. There are plenty of movies with whitewashing that have done well. They could have saved themselves some trouble with less idiotic casting choices, but the story just wasn't interesting.
The ridicules thing is that black, Cambodian and Maori-Chinese actors are as inaccurate for Egyptians and Egyptian gods as white ones if not more inaccurate, Many Egyptian gods had inhuman looks like the green skin of Osiris or the many animal hybrids. While those with human appearances are similar in skin color to normal Egyptian people who are often tanned. But all that matters to activists is not having many white actors, anything else is fine, even if it's inaccurate as fuck.
Africans built the pyramids and created said religion as well as Cush Sudan Nubia Ethiopia etc. All ancient civilizations. All would be considered black where you're from.
actors are not to blame but the studios are definately to be held responsible for white washing. Because that is exactly what they did. It was a blatant disgrace to hermetic history and culture what makes this any different to playing black or yellow face? I am never going to see this film for that very reason.
I can’t believe he passed on his passion piece The Dump, a movie based on taking a dump to do this film. After getting older, I see what he was shooting for by making a film that’s the incredibly equivalent to having a dump. That odorless masterpiece was Gods of Egypt. Thank you, sir.
The movie was good, casting was great but the media decided that they were hating the film before it even came out cause not enough >. It's a shame, you can always point it out and promote for more diversity in movies, but that should not make the film all bad (or all good for the opposite, looking at you Jordan Peel movie US). This was an excellent popcorn flick that remind me a lot of 90-90 action movies.
This recap left out director Proyas' extended, bitter engagement with critics after the movie got so viciously slammed...It culminated in his statements (NYT op-ed?) which condemned the criticism as insensitive and cruelly bullying to the individuals and teams who had put their blood, sweat and tears into the production. He felt it was unfair for many of the critics to slander people they didn't know. Further, he wondered how they could justify the potential damage they might render to the careers of these hard-working professionals (and their livelihoods and their families')...He pointed out that celebrity actors, writers, directors, producers, etc., may be financially insulated from the fallout of a box office and critical flop but almost everyone else on a production may not be. Regardless of what I felt about the movie (I liked it well enough), I was struck by Proyas' comments (whether self-serving or not, I don't care). We live in an age when it is extremely easy to provide instant feedback on just about everything. That sometimes takes on a nasty edge. That nastiness can be amplified, its distribution accelerated and its impacts magnified by the viral, networked nature of our media. What's potentially missing in all that is simple human compassion -- our sensitivity and respect for each other. It's so easy to say some snarky, malignant thing out of the sneering corner of our mouths (whether we even mean it or not). We don't have to think about it; we don't have to really care. But it sure is hard to take it back once it's out there and the damage is already done.
I was less bothered by the white washing. The only time I can think of that that's really bothered me was when they Cast ScarJo as Motoko in Ghost in the Shell. There was plenty of good Japanese actresses they could have gotten, but again, box office draw. My issue with this film was all the money went into CG. There are films with big special effects budgets, but when you can see where the money went and it looks good, I'm fine with that. This movie looked poorly done on too much CG and cost cutting corners. I watched the 2019 Hellboy movie the other night and as poorly as that movie is written, the special effects look alright, and you can tell some aspects are real. David Harbor was actually dressed up in makeup and such. CG is a good tool but smart directors have to know when and where to use it, and in my opinion, it should be used like calk, that filler for the gaps that practical effects cant fill in feesibly. Putting real objects in front of the camera will always look better, that is something Hellboy got more right, or even the first few Underworld movies. These are all dumb spectacle movies, which is fine, but knowing how to pull them off is the key.
Same here. For me, since The Crow and even more so since Dark City. He’s brilliant, IMHO. And again, filmmaker like him, their “failures” are more interesting than most people’s “successes” (especially these days, where so many of the “successes” are cookie cutter woke POS).

I wondered originally if they just did not have enough time to naturalise the dialogue recordings but now I wonder if they had originally tried some Egyptian accents then decided to redub it at the last minute.
I enjoy it but can say its still a pretty bad story
THANK GOD, been waiting for this video for a few years already.
The Whitewashing-Debate about this Movie is SOO STUPID !
“White Washing” is just an excuse. Even if you take the “white washing” out of the picture and still made the same movie with POC, the movie would STILL have failed. It was… lame. I don’t know how else to put it. Just… MEH.
We have seen what happens when you hire actors based on skin color/gender and not talent.
They all fail with flying colors.
This is literally one of my favorite movies
Ppl in the comments saying, "I loved this movie", "it was entertaining", "it was a good movie", must have never seen an actual good movie before.
*This is one of my favorite 'comfort movies' that I put on if I have had a rough day.*
It's fun, has a great cast and fantastic PACING, there's never a dull moment. There is something old fashioned about it, it reminds me of the old Sinbad films, full of adventure. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend making some popcorn and giving it a chance.
Yeah true, it is similar in style to them and the origin Clash Of The Titans. Never really got the hate for this movie. It's not great, but it's a fun time.

I like the movie, is fun to watch with it's spectacle scenes and what not, idk why the US people so fussy and harsh about it , there wasn't much pure Egyptian actors/actress anymore, they are mixed with Arabs, ancient Greeks and Romans, why still matters so much? the story is fictional loosely base on the Egyptian mythology, where are these people when that hallmark merlin show cast an African woman to play Guinevere in the Arthurian Tales? weren't she supposed to be white? so much bias
so you know, I'm "US people" and I liked the film ...definitely a fun watch
I do think that the complaints about casting came purely from American identity politics. There are plenty of good American cultural exports, but that's not one of them.
You know what, Alex Proyas' previous work "Knowing (2009)" is one of the very few movies that still freak me out. Anyway, since your channel is not afraid to make deep cuts, what do you think of the idea of revisting "Into the Blue (2005)"?
Knowing(2009) is a pretty good/decent film
Love that flick, it had a great Outer Limits/Twilight Zone feel to it. The ending is overwhelming, and the final shot is one of my personal favorites.

I'm sure an Egyptian film company would cast an all Egyptian group of actors, but this is an American film. Just as I'd imagine an African made movie set in England during the Civil War would also be made up of primarily African actors.
All this virtue signalling diversity talk is in itself racist. Why do people watch a movie and think that some sort of quota has to be filled. Did you know that the Oscar winning film Parasite had only one white extra in the whole movie? Did you care?
Egypt is and always has been in Africa. 99% of it's history was named Kemit. The religion it portrays is adopted from Cush. You're confusing modern Egypt (different race) with ancient Egypt where there was no Greece. Just learn the non white washed history. Then form an opinion.

Okay, so in woke logic, it's completely okay to ignore Tolkien's (very detailled and deliberate) character descriptions etc., but a campy fantasy movie that is very vaguely based on egyptian myths, has to be as accurate as possible. Yeah, sure. ;)
If diversity is such an important strength for Hollywood, then why do so many of those very diverse/woke movies (and tv shows) become huge flops? Shouldn't there be a huge audience who is hungry for more diversity? People longing for more representation for decades now? Well, at least that's what we're told.
Or could it be that those woke shitstorms (like it happened with "Gods of Egypt") only represent a very small minority of frustrated morons who spend their money on OnlyFans and Twitch thots and OnlyFans rather than buying movie tickets? Just sayin. ;)

Naw the gods should’ve been Egyptian naw white gentleman’s. Yes you had diversity buh not where it really matter.
Good analysis, but dude those cutaway gags are unbearable

Really enjoyed this movie and i own it, cast didnot bother me , wonder how it did in dvd sales.
Clearly the directors ego drove him to insanity
