  • Flystrike in rabbits (and also Guinea Pigs) happens when a fly lays eggs on your rabbit, which hatch into maggots. If left untreated, flystrike can quickly become fatal.
Here are some ways you can prevent this:
    • Keeping your rabbits' environment clean is a priority. Consider how often you clean out their litter tray, ideally, this should be daily during the summer months.
    • Groom your rabbit regularly, particularly if they are unable to do a good job themselves for any reason. Check them over twice daily, paying attention to their bottom area to check for any messy bums. Clean the area twice daily if needed.
Remember NEVER to fully bathe your rabbit!
    • A balanced diet of 85% hay, 10% fresh greens and 5% quality nuggets (such as our Science Selective range) will help to keep their digestive system working properly, reducing the risk of excessive caecotrophs/messy bums.
    • Environmental protection can also be helpful too. Consider fly screens to keep away those pesky flies and planting naturally insect-repellent plants close by can help too.
    • Speak with your vet about suitable spot-on treatments and if they think your rabbit needs it. These products should be used as part of an overall management plan and are designed to be used in combination with the above tips, not to replace them.
Flystrike is a medical emergency which can be fatal. If you spot any signs of flystrike on your rabbit, please contact your vet (or emergency vet if out of hours) immediately.
